LOL, only a trick that Houdini could master! I'm laughing but I also feel for you. Everything you said I can relate to. One thing though, I've always been clutzy. Have you also been or did fibro bring it on? I wonder if it's a warning signal that a person'll have fibro? At any rate, a first class trick and I hope your cellphone survived the wrath of the spoon (so much for the Spoon Theory, eh? I had no idea you'd give up one of your daily spoons for a phone!) http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/wpress/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory/
Glad I’m not the only one. It is embarrassing as people react like you’re being careless or out of it. Seems ill be fine for a bit then the next I’m dropping stuff all day. I like what Elizabeth said. It’s like your hands just open and you lose grasp. Feels confusing at the time because I’ve never been ‘clumsy’ before this fibro stuff. So pleased to know I’m not the only one!
Hi there, Pet....thanks for the link, I read the article... sooooooo right on target. I have always been a little clutzy, too, just not this bad. It seems with age, it gets worse. I started to complain to my parents about having pain when I entered my teen years. My dad took me to several specialists but they couldn't find anything conclusive and fibro wasn't heard of at that time but I did have an Orthopedist tell me I had an impinged nerve in my shoulder, as well as "Fibrositis". I think that's what it was (brain fog moment alert!!!!). lol. I'm thinking fibrositis was later changed to fibromyalgia, I'm not sure. Looking back on it now, he didn't ask me about all the OTHER symptoms tied in with fibro, they just didn't know as much back then. He mainly asked if I have discomfort in my shoulders and arms and that was it. Tried prescribing motrin but it hurt my stomach AND did nothing for my pain. My parents thought I was just making the pain up to get out of school, homework, chores, etc..... Since the good ole Doc couldn't tell them I had anything provable, they figured I was making it up. Sometimes I think my mom til believes that but I've let that all go. Looking back, I had depression, anxiety, stress, clumsiness, forgetfulness, fogginess, lethargy and more. Thank goodness that more is known about it and that my Rheumatologist has confirmed that all of it can be symptoms of fibro AND many of them, Lupus as well. I say the symptoms CAN be because not everyone will have all of mine nor will I have all of anyone elses. But from what I've observed so far at this site, we all share one common symptom: FRUSTRATION!!!!!! lol.
Hey, Elizabeth, I drop things, too. Especially the water bottle I carry around all day because of cotton mouth. The plastic is so slick on the dasanti bottles, well, all of them I guess. And I have really dry hands so I drop things at least 5-15 times a day. Grrrrr!!!!!!!!
I didn't realize that dropping things was also a part of fibro. I have times where everything I touch i drop or knock over. I trip over m ay own feet sometimes and can't talk right. Its like my tongue just keeps getting in the way. I am learning so much from ya'll. I'm out of the fog right now and hoping it doesn't return real soon. I have a dr. appt in March with a new Rheum. The Neuro. dr. doesn't believe in Fibro and ordered four tests that I can't afford. MRI, EEG, VNG, and a memory test. He says it has to be something you can put your finger on. I am also going wednesday for the shots for trigger points. The back of my neck and shoulders are so bad you could see that they are spasming on an xray. Hope this works. The medial block I had back in August is holding. So thankful to God. Have a good evening. Sue
Are any of you also sensitive to smells and sound? I have both. If even two T.V's in the house are going and are set too high, I have to find a place of quiet! Also, the banging of dishes when put away bother me alot. Then there is a hypersensitivity to odors. My mother lives with me. She LOVES to put some onions in a frying skillet and smolder them on HIGH heat before she throws some sausage in there. Yeah, let's sizzle that on high, too! I run over and put the fan on, begging, "Please keep the fan on, mom." My nose will actually plug up and I can't breathe if smells are too intense. I have to careful what kind of room sprays I'm exposed to....the intense cherry blossom will plug me up and give me a headache. I stick with very light, natural scents like the white cotton scents. And I fry food very little......but that's ok. My mom fries enough for both of us. I was told by my Rheumy that many of his patients have the same symptoms.
Dear tiffyg
Yes, I am getting worse at dropping thing.....much worse than I every was. I seldom dropped things or bumped into one dish with another one. I though it was perhaps due to the arthritis that is in my hands and worsening in pain. Has anyone else noticed this becoming a problem now whereas in years gone by it was not a problem?
Somebody mentioned dropping the phone. Several years ago I noticed that when talking on the phone while holding it in my hands, my arm would go numb, so I bought a headset which takes care of the problem of numbness. More recently I have noticed that some fingers go numb and I'm not sure why except that I have the arm bent a bit so I'm assuming that the problem is with circulation.
yes tiffyg, add me to the list, but I have permanent weakness and nerve damage from spinal cord compression. I also have heavy tremors and movement disorder, and walking is a real hazard. told hubby to invest in the bubble wrap company, and keep me suited up well packaged for safety.
what helps is being aware of what I'm doing, taking rest breaks, noticing if treatments help or make me worse, etc. We are de-junking our home to provide for less chance of trip ups and falls. I drink out of a car cup with a lid, fewer chances of big spills. Appliances like a food processor are priceless.
good luck. issue though is worth getting checked out, especially if you have diabetes, or anything that can cause peripheral nerve or muscle issues.
loving hugs
I have those a lot! It gets really frustrating when you end up breaking things.
I always was kind of absent minded and a bit of a klutz, falling off ladders in the orchard, dropping things etc. It is a lot worse now, I really hate it when I drop something pick it up and drop it again and have to pick it up again, have knocked a glass of water over twice in a row, after refilling of course. Usually I find if it happens once, it continues to happen through out the day. Find there is no point getting frustrated as it just gets worse. Just replaced our glasses once again. Grabbers work really well especially when you drop something behind furniture.
I’ve also found myself recently running into walls, door frames, exercise machines etc. particularly when I’m tired.
So you can add me to the list as well.
