New Medication (Gabapentin)

I take Gabapentin which originally was prescribed for me due to nerve pain in my feet, ie. burning. I am on 800mg 3x a day, and it can make you very sleepy, but I do believe it helps somewhat. But, I'm new to all this too & do notice that my feet still burn sometimes, and I ache all over sometimes too. My theory is to give it a try for a month. Once you get used to it, the sleepiness seems to go away, Good luck

I take 100mg in a.m, 100mg in afternoon & 200mg @ bedtime. Only side affect I had was sinus, no drowsiness.....helps w/nueropathic pain & possibly ease FM pain. Two ppl I know take 3200mg daily, no problems for neurpathy. I may do a slight increase soon. ((hugs))

I am currently taking Gabapentin, and have been for the past 5 years. I also take other meds in conjunction with it and all of them combined seem to help somewhat. I say somewhat because there are days when my pain level is through the roof, but all in all I do like Gabapentin because I am not looped out of my mind, and am able to function fairly well.

I take gabepentin, I take 2700mg a day. I don’t know how much it really works because for the most part my pain is really bad. It’s causing my depression to escalate. I have gain 25 pounds or so since all this started.
Sorry I’m not to positive right now because the pain and guilt of being sick is taking a toll.

UPDATE:

I had started this back in March. I received a huge response when I posted this discussion, it was so helpful.

Just wanted to post an update...I am disappointed, I believe the Gabapentin was helping but had so much swelling that that I had to stop taking it. Doctor said it should take about a week to get out of my system.

I have been on gabapentin fr over a year, this was prescribed for nerve pain. If I miss one dose I'm in excruciating pain. The only draw back is that I have gainedv40 lbs.

i take it and it works ok with other meds. i have been taking it for a few years

I did not like it. I was fearful of all of the side effects. Still looking for meds that work. Nothing seems to help the pain. I got an infrared sauna that helps with the fatigue.

I have been on it for years. It seems to help ease some symptoms of pain. I do still have other symptoms that it doesn’t though.

I just picked my first prescription up of Gabapentin. I asked my pharmacist if I can take flexeril with it.. He said I might not want to do that in the beginning because it can make you really drowsy, and said some thing about being sedated. LOL, I don't think I spelled that word right. so I'm going to wait till tomorrow night since I took a flexeril already today and have to get up for a doctors appointment tomorrow morning. So if I do get really sleepy at least I don't have to wake up for any reason on Sat morning.

I hope I don't have major side effects, I am sensitive to some drugs. But we will see very soon.

I use flexeral with it, I don’t get drowsy

Really, Flexeral doesn't make me sleep as much as it used to. I can function pretty good with it now, I'm still not sleeping very well. But it sure does make me feel like not doing much. I feel like I"m pulling more weight when I take it. Well I will know tomorrow night when I take my first dose of gabapentin. Thanks

I take flexeral at night to help me sleep but it is starting not to work

Hi, Gaila. I am also new to this blog. My experience with Gabapentin is this: I took it for years, first as a med to lower the amount of hot flashes that kept waking me at night. It did the trick. A few years later, I started taking it 2x a day for fibro. It also helped with fibro pain.

The biggest problem is that it messes with your memory. I was forgetful, loopy, foggy, sleepy on Gabapentin. I will now use it only when my pain is high. The fibro fog is hard enough, but adding Gabapentin makes it worse.

I was actually surprised that my pain levels did not increase when I weaned myself off of Gabapentin. Every one is different, has different symptoms to deal with. If it helps with your pain, You Go Girl!

I just took my first dose of Gabapentin. I'm waiting to see how long it is before I either feel a bad side effect or a good side effect. My body kind of works like this, " How dare you give me something when I was not prepared for it. Do you know what your doing to me right now? LOL, I'm trying to be funny too. Oh you say its going to do what? what's the name of that stuff you just gave me, gabaabptn? I can't even pronounce that word !! I can't believe you did this to me.... " I'm trying to keep a sense of humor, as long as I don't get doubled up pain and massive confusion, and sever dizziness I will be fine. I took it about ten minutes ago... So far so good. Will let you know later how this first dose went.

I've been on Gabapentin for about a year. I had previously been on Cymbalta then Lyrica - both caused a lot of weight gain. I have been somewhat pleased with the 300mg - 3 times a day. I do find that it makes me sleepy but not so that I can sleep - mostly an in between state, unable to focus. This wears off if I make myself get up and get moving - then I am able to function. At this time my doctor is making some changes - I don't know how it will all work out. Lack of sleep is my biggest issue right now. For many of us this is a "trial and error" process. I hope this works well for you - tell your body this is an "adventure and change can be good". LOL
