I have flair ups from my neck down to my hips/thighs. Currently I am having a huge flair up in between my shoulder blades. I usually lay on my stomach, with a body pillow that my knee goes over and a body pillow behind me. I always go to sleep this way. Sometimes I end up on my side in the middle of the night. I am trying to see if maybe I am sleeping in the wrong position that makes my back flair up more. I have had to take my pain meds in the middle of the night the last two nights and turn my heating pad on and lay on my back. Any suggestions on how to try to lay in bed? Anyone else have this problem? Thank you for your input in advance.
I do lay on my side with pillows between my legs and knees as well as a body pillow and extra pillow putting pressure on my back. I always use heating pad before bed and sometimes I will wake up and turn it back on in the night. I am going to call my dr to ask for a muscle relaxer because I feel like in between my shoulder blades the muscles feel like they are going to snap they feel so tight.
Hi lady butler, if you are sleeping on your stomach, you need to have something, a pillow, under your stomach so your back is not in that unnatural position that comes from lying flat on your stomach. This I know from many years of PT on and off. The fetal position is best. Try lying on your side with your body curled around your body pillow.
My current dr hasn't however I have had them from a ER dr. I'm calling her to request them now. Yes the tightness is so painful and it does feel like it is burning as well.
I'll try to put a pillow under my stomach tonight. We will see the results. Im so stiff that sometimes I can't make my body go into the fetal position.
Norflex works the best for me. She doesn't like to give me much of anything so It will be a long shot if I can actually get it. We have a jet tub and I use that often and have epson salt baths as well. I have tried everything so far.
I have asked her that question. Last visit she seemed to actually realize I wasnt playing around. So I'll make the call and she if she actually does it or not. I dont think she realized that I have to take care of a 2 3/4year old and a 1 year old. I need to be able to take care of me girls ect
Hi, I am a newbie. Well I thought that i was the only one having to sleep on my stomach due to burning pain from shoulder blades to lower back.I don't use a pillow for my head but I place a pillow at my lower abdomen to support the spinal curve. One other good thing about sleeping on my stomach, it eliminates the need for my CPAP machine. I breathe fine.
i think how i sleep is rare. i can sleep on my stomach, back and sides. to fall asleep i have to put a heating pad on my lower back as well as one on my neck and sholder blades. i have a pillow thats made from Boppy. the pillow is desigened for pregnant women. but i dont know how i slept w/o it. the pillow haas 2 pillows that r attached. one of the pillows is more curved and beacuse of the way it made its very flexiable. i use it all the time even when i am not in bed.
i usually do sleep on my side with my boppy pillow under my head and between legs. but i always start on my back witht the heating pad. if i dont start this way my back hurts so bad and it takes forever to get to sleep
I lie on my side due to back and neck pain. I have no idea if it is any better for you or not.
Angel has a good list of suggestions. I can't think of anything else except to suggest a hot shower or bath with epsom salts right before you go to sleep.
Maybe a different pain medicine might help you too. Or a higher dose for the night time.

Petunia
Hi ladybutler,
As bad as my back is, laying on my back to sleep is the only way I can manage it. I can only lay on my sides for a moment before my hips and knees and hamstrings are screaming at me. I cannot picture how you can lay on your stomach with a pillow under your knees, but you are younger, it just seems like it would really hurt, but really do what works for you!
My Chiropractor as told me no more than 20 minutes of heating pad, that it will do more harm than good if any longer, so I try to listen, I try to use it when there is not a chance of falling asleep with it on.
I hope you get some relief. Those are beautiful children, I'm sure they want their Momm well!
Hugs,
SK
