It’s hard to say. I think it’s more likely caused by medications we take. I will have those issues if I take my medications on an empty stomach which I do in the morning.
Hello, Nannyfor3!
I thank you for your reply. You know, you are onto something as I always take my medications after I wake up and on an empty stomach. I am going to force myself to eat something first and find out if that will make a difference. It seems, however, that when I take my scheduled medications on a full stomach, I still get relentless or unforgiving G.E.R.D. and have constipation. I just had an endoscopy and will know the result this coming week. I wonder if the endoscopy will show what is going on for me. Thanks again for commenting on my post. …very helpful!
Sincerely,
JES
JES,
I was at Stanford recently, seeing a fibromyalgia/chronic pain specialist. They told me that stomach (and probably GERD) ailments are very common in people with fibromyalgia. I have many years history of stomach problems, and now take 3 meds for my stomach issues (I have “erosive gastritis”, per an endoscopy). It is really good you’re getting the endoscopy.
I hope taking your meds with some food helps. Are you taking any NSAIDS (like Motrin, aleve, etc?) Those are very bad for people with stomach problems!
I hope you let us know the results of your endoscopy. Good luck!
Thank you for responding to my inquiry, Fibrogal! Thank you for confirming that Fibromyalgia can cause G.E.R.D. I am very sorry that you have suffered with stomach problems for years. How awful! I hope that you medications are a great help to you! I have never heard of erosive gastritis. It is going to be most interesting to learn the results of my recent endoscopy! I am glad that you believe that it is good that I got one. I am finding that even eating prior to taking my medications that it does not help, sad to say. I will let you and other members know the results of my endoscopy! I am sick as a dog! I still believe that my lower back problems are contributing to my having indigestion problems. I hope to know more after I have completed appointments that I have with three different specialists. Thank you for your care! JES
Hi Jes, I am using supplements to help counteract the GERD and constipation. For the GERD, there’s an Aloe drink called StomachAde. I drink 2 oz in the morning before eating anything. This has really helped heal me and I have less symptoms. For the constipation, I use a product called Mag O 7. Take 3-4 capsules in the evening and you should start seeing results in the next day. I get both of these at the Vitamin Shoppe or Amazon. I hope these ideas help. It’s hard to deal with all of these side effects from the meds.
It can help to take meds with something that “coats” your stomach as well, like whole milk (not skim, which might as well be water). Bananas seem to work well for some people also. Maybe even try PetoBismol? That will coat your stomach, it’s liquid so you can take pills with it, and it may even help with any post-med upset.

My sincere apologies for not getting back to you until just now, Cathy! Thank you for telling me about the “medications” that you use that help you. Thank you for telling me where to purchase them. Great ideas! It certainly is hard to deal with the side effects of meds! Whew! I never buy from AMAZON as their shipping costs are high and I just have a “thing” about the company. Can I buy both products from the Vitamin Shoppe? Are their prices and shipping prices less than AMAZON’s? All the best to you and THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
My sincere apology for not getting back to you until just now, Nmns! Wow! I never knew what you told me! Thank you for the information. I had an endoscopy but am now scheduled for a colonoscopy. The cause of my constipation is unknown to me. It could be due to my back problem; it could be because I do not eat foods that help one to not have constipation. It could be from the two meds that I take. You, too, get back pain when your colon is full? Wow! That is exactly what happens to me. It sounds like you have not had it any too easy. I am sorry. Ramble on any time!
I must apologize to you, too, for my not replying to your comment until just now, ModSupport. Bananas do nothing for me nor does Pepto Bismol. I don’t know why. I believe that what is going on for me is having Fibro and having a very serious back problem. Hopefully all will get resolved after my having a colonoscopy and working with a neurosurgeon who I see this week! Thanks for replying and commenting and your suggestions!
Sometimes, my “serious back problem” is actually septic kidneys. I may or may not have a fever or inconsistent urination. Light, Love & Peace.
Hi Jes, I have never checked into Vitamin Shoppe but you should see if they do. That would help avoid Amazon, lol!
I should clarify that. I didn’t look into Vitamin Shoppe online.
Jes,
I was wondering if your endoscopy turned up anything?
I really appreciated your response to my feedback a while back (sorry I didn’t get back sooner). The one thing I wanted to say, when I told you Stanford told me that a lot of folks with fms have stomach ailments, I didn’t mean they said that fms causes stomach problems. I understood they meant, they just tend to happen together in people. To very tardily answer your question, erosive gastritis is like an ulcer, only not as bad. If I take the stomach meds, it is much better. . . how is your GERD these days?
No worries about not getting back to me sooner, Fibrogal! Thanks for clarifying. I was glad to give you feedback! I am not sure that FM is the cause of my indigestion problems. Time will tell. I had the endoscopy and the doctor only told me that I have gastritis and recommended that I use Pepto Bismol, (which I tried but it did not help). He, upon my request, agreed to do a colonoscopy. I will have it on November 19th, 2018. I am not looking forward to having the colonoscopy because of having to go without food and water and having to use SUPRAPREP (sp). I will be up all night sitting on the toilet! Yuck! Thanks for asking me how my endoscopy went. I forget what stomach meds that you take. I am so hoping that they are most beneficial for you!
What are septic kidneys, Luna02? How does one get checked to see if one has septic kidneys? I often wonder if what is going on for me is related to my kidneys as the pain that I experience is right near my right kidney. Forgive me for taking so low to get back to you! I hope that the problem with your kidneys is under control. It sounds like a very serious problem.
Thank you for writing to me and forgive me, please, for my taking so long to get back to you. It does not matter if I eat bananas or used Pepto Bismol, sad to say. No matter what I eat causes me to have heart burn and/or G.E.R.D. Thank you for you advice. I appreciate it!
No worries, CathyO! I can look into the VITAMIN SHOPPE myself. Thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for the information, Nmns1976. My colon gets full, but, then I get constipated. The constipation, definitely, aggravates my back and increases the back pain. I am sorry that, you, too, have to experience back pain!
Hi Judy,
Thanks for getting back to me so soon. Well, gastritis is what I have too, only it went a step further into "erosive " territory, which means it’s just bad gastritis. It started off as regular gastritis though. Certainly it is a significant problem, not something proto bismol alone will help! I recommend going to a GI doctor. There are much better meds for gastritis than peptic bismol. Do you have health insurance? Anyway, I don’t know if gastritis is associated with constipation. But you should not have to suffer! If you want any recommendations regarding meds for gastritis, let me know. I know you’ve had a whole lot of recommendations already from other fibro people on this site, so I hope you’re not overwhelmed! Hope your colonoscopy goes well. Take care,
Jean
