Diability?

So my boyfriend thinks it would be a good idea for me to try and get on disability, but I am a little nervous to even try, so I wanted to run it by you guys. See what those of you with Fibro though. See if it would be worth it to try.
I was in college for about 3 years, but kept doing poorly due to brain fog, and fatigue. I had to drop the idea of being a police officer due to possible asthma, so I tried to do cosmetology classes, but my back ended up hurting, and my feet would swell and turn purple, and parts of them were numb, so my doctor recommended I drop the classes, so I did, and went back to Criminal justice classes, that I ended up having to drop out of due to depression. I recently found that my eye sight is also getting worse, and I went from having 20/200 vision, to 20/400 vision. I haven't been able to work for a couple years. And now to top it all off, my left knee cap has been trying to slip out.
So I am curious, should I go for it, or not waste my time?

Hi Mojean,
I am not clear on if you have been seen and diagnosed with anything as of yet?
My first suggestion is to speak with a doctor and see what comes up. You may want to see specialists who deal with lots of the symptoms you are describing . Many people go to rheumatologist and neurologists. I wish you all the best and send you

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia beginning of September, but have been suffering for over a year.
I tried to get into see a rheumatologist, but she is the only one in the wholeUpper Peninsula, and is only taking emergency refurals. Other than that the closest one is 200 miles away. So the chance of me being able to get into one is slim to none lol
Would a neurologists see me for Fibro?

Wow sorry about the lack of ability to get to a rheumatologist. I live in New York and many neurologists treat fibromyalgia and other chronic pain illnesses as well . Many primary care doctors do as well.I hope you find the right doctor and that you can get there . I know how challenging it can be to get to the right doctor

Thank you.
It is a challenge sometimes living here. I live in a small town with less than 2,000 people, and the nearest "Large" town is about 40 minutes away. So finding specialist isn't easy. My general Practitioner doctor is an hour away. We do have a few doctors here in my town, but they still believe that pills are the magic cure all.

I know you have a difficult challenge and I wish you all the best .sounds like you have a supportive boyfriend and that is such a blessing .

Well the recommendation of getting a Rhemotologist is key, so is a therapist along with as much documentation you can get. It took me over a year after my first denial and then I hired an attorney and we filed for a hearing. After that filing took a good year to get the hearing. They look at everything and dig up as much as they can to try to deny you. I found that if you have any previous alcohol issues or drug issues are things the dig for. The checked with all my doctors asking those kinds of questions.

Once I was denied first time the lady from the Social Security office said I recommend you get an attorney and have a therapist and those two things are key in your second attempt. I could not believe how much paperwork it took and how much they dug up. I had no alcohol or drug issues and my attorney said that was a huge plus in filing.

The initial paperwork is not easy to complete and they ask the same question but stated differently throughout the packet. It is all done online and it took me several days to complete. You can log on and save and then go back in to work on it until your done. Once I hit submit, that same day my local SS office called me which shocked me. They said they review it and then submit it to the regional office. They asked for some clarity to a few of my answers and then sent it on.

Since you can not get to a Rhemotologist that I feel is your first hurdle. I am not sure about a neurologist route but it is worth a try. Also, I think that you described many ongoing issues, you need to log and date everything as you start your process. All my information I presented to you is based on my case and each case as you realize is different. I wish you a lot of luck as you deal with your issues and if you proceed with the SS Disability. I think since I was over 60 it might have been in my favor in applying for Disability.
