Fingernails, and the story they tell

What a shame, mine knew it by heart, he has an incredible memory, even if he goes over it before coming into the exam room, that is a lot to keep track of.

I hope that you are in for a pleasant surprise, I hope this one is a good one, you are so deserving of good care and a diagnosis, just remember, it may take a little time to sort it all out, so much of these share the same symptoms!

Make sure to show them to the Doctor.

Thank you for reminding me of patience and better things to come. yes, you're right many of the auto diseases share the same symptoms, which is why I often wonder if they aren't one big disease with tentacles of specific symptoms.

You must have been son relieved when you finally found your current rheumy, SK! To have him actually know and memorize your symptoms shows caring and concern on his part. And for him to have sorted out the myriad of symptoms you had is quite an accomplishment. Admittedly, it must be tough for rheumie's when patients show up who have multiple auto-immune symptoms.

Yes, I must recite it, "patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue..."

Of course, I have none of it so must recite this multiple times!

I also have been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, my fingernail and toenails are very ridged and slightly pitted. I know my rheumatologist took one look at my nails and said you have psoriatic arthritis, also diagnosed with fibro at the same time.

May I invite you to also join us on Ben's Friends Psoriatic Arthritis site, lots of good info there too! You are always welcome, should you decide to join there too, I belong to several groups.

My fingernails are ridged as well, from cuticle to tip, and my thumbnails are kind of wavy over the nailbed, as they arch up from the cuticle, but then dip down about 2/3 of the way to the tip, but then arch normally again at the tip...

In the past 6 months I've developed a new symptom that is puzzling everyone; my fingernails *hurt*. My thumbnails are the worst, but all ten nailbeds are excruciatingly painful when pushed on, and heaven forbid I try to file or even clip them! I tend to chew off the ends when they get too long, because it hurts less than clipping, and feeds my nervous habits!

Oh Pixie, I feel your pain! Hope your Doc can help you with this, please get to him! Hope you feel better soon!

Pam, I'm so sorry to hear this! PsA is sure a tough disease! I hope you're on meds and on your way to feeling better.

Geez pixie..that sure must be frustrating for you. We use our fingers for everything so it must be really painful for you. I hope your Dr. or (some Dr.) can figure out what this is all about and help you. I, also, used to chew/bite my nails off years ago to feed MY nervous habits..trust me..I had MANY nervous problems. Might sound 'off the wall' to you but I went to a hypnotist for this nail biting habit and have never bitten my nails since. Do you personally think this painful fingernails has something to do with FM? Hard to say eh?

My hair hurts when I'm in a major FM flare-up..my Dr. dismissed this as 'all in my head'. Soooo......I spoke with my hairdresser about it and she said::"Well I can certainly understand/believe that b/c our hair is a living part of our body..how else would it be able to grow?" Maybe that applies to your problem with your painful fingernails...? I don't know but I certainly would keep asking until you get a satisfactory answer.

Just sayin....

Hugs to you,

Geranium

Ridges means you have chronic pain. Naturopaths have dozens of signs they look for on nails. Susan, thanks for the info about psoriatic arthritis nails. I'll check my Mom's nails. I've only noticed ridges so far.

Gemm, what do nails look like when you have lupus? I have lupus.

Someone asked what ridges look like. they are lines of bumps that go the whole length of your nail, and all the way across. Like if you ran your fingers through the sand in a straight line, the high parts left behind are the ridges. I should research this a bit more online. You can't see the white moons or cuticles on any of my fingers, and the nail bed is whitish, which means anemia, but I can't get treated for it, iron makes me too sick. So frustrating.

That's frustrating and mystifying! Have you discussed it with your doctor? I would.

I'm sorry you've got that going on with your nails. It's kind of hard to avoid bumping nails so you must experience a lot of pain from them.

I didn't know that about ridges. My 1st rheumy totally blew them off. It's funny that we all seem to have them and suffer chronic pain. And several of us have ridges that are splitting. I wonder what that's about?

Gonna try to include a photo of ridged nails for people's info. Hope the link works:

Note though that the second photo shows up and down ridges, not side to side, which the accompanying article describes (the side to side ridges.)

I have also read that ridged nails could mean that you are more susceptible to arthritis, though I cannot remember where.

might have been on here! Each site differs a bit, same as each doctor!

Mine are brittle and have deep ridges and lines.I don't know what it means .But I do know the fingerprints can tell you if perhaps you should watch for heart or vascular dieseas There are three patterns to the fingerprint aloop,an arch ,and a whorl( wich goes around like a bulls eye. It is the whorls that are of concern the more of them you have the more likely you are to have a genwtic problem with your heart or veins ,if you have 3 or more on your left hand you should have your heart evealuated. To test this a woman brought her 17 years old son for me to look at,I told him he would have a wonderful life and all good things ,His mother who then was smirking I took aside and told her not to wait till monday to get the boy a cardiologist as he had ten whorls ,that is when she said she was testing me,he had several cariologists as he had been bor with his heart on the outside of his body.

Jenni ,hi ,I'm not sure how pectin works to help but the reasoning behind geliten is that the it is made of besides the pectin the aspic is made from horn ,hoofs, cartilage ,sinue, I think you get it all the garbage after slaughter, the reasoning goes you can't rebuild a brick house without the right kind of brinks. The hoofs are good for fingernails as they are the same thing. Many people take it for arthritus (it helps mine some) because of the other things in it are those which are breaking down it the body. I have heard an apple a day though, bet it couldn't hurt.
