Hints and tips

When getting new meds, most insurance has a cop out plan so you don't have to buy a 3 month supply for something you may not need. Just call your insurance company.

I too use my crockpot on a regular basis. Thereā€™s only two of us so I make a crockpot full of chili or stew and then break it down into meals and freeze them. Then when I donā€™t feel up to cooking I can pull it from the freezer throw it in the crockpot in the am its ready to eat by dinnertime. No matter what I make I make enough to be broke down into several meals and freeze it.
I am a thrift store but. Goodwill mostly. I found a brand new showe chair with two in padding on the back and seat for $4.99. Today I found a bathtub bar to help both of us out of the tub when we soak to ease the pain. Again I paid $4.99.

I have stairs in my house. I have baskets on either ends. If (no when) my kids leave their junk lying around, I just throw it in the basket. I have a basket for up and one for down. Sometimes you couldnā€™t pay me to go up and down the stairs so I have pain meds, pillows, heating blankets, necessitiesā€¦on ALL floors. I try to minimize my traveling the steps.
My crock pot is my friend. There are several recipes online to help you with dinners. When I can, I like to make and freeze extra. The days I donā€™t want to cook or donā€™t feel up to it, I always have dinner in the freezer. I use freezer bags that are labeled and plastic containers. Soup freezes well, too. My kids can use a microwave.
P.S., what the heck is a radar key?

Hey there,

Sounds like some good ideas there, especially keeping the pain killers on all levels.

A radar key is basically just a key that opens the doors of disabled toilets. All the locks are the same so the key opens them all.

If you are like me & are on a tight budget, I have been using Share Iowa (I checked & there is a Share Nebraska so I am hoping all states have this program), It is a program to buy inexpensive groceries. It also takes Food Stamp Cards & if your card doesn't kick in until a later date, they will hang onto the #'s & use them then. There are several packages you can select from & extra items, & each month has different choices. Earlier this month for $98 I purchased 15-12oz pkgs of bacon, 15-1" thick pork chops, & a pkg of breakfast items (8 omlets, 8 sausage, egg & cheese biscuits & 1-1lb pkg of bacon). & the extra item I bought was 3lbs of shrimp. M

That certainly sounds like a good plan for groceries if you have room to store them :)

As a matter of fact, I did have to make my homemade chicken soup earlier than planned, I traded the frozen chicken to the fridge & the shrimp in its' place.LOL

Ok, I have recently tried something and I am seeing some benefit so I want to share. I bought one of those foam rollers, the fitness type. I got a small one with handles that I can use to massage sore areas. Wow, it is really painful while doing it but after just 1-2 minutes (that is all I can handle) I see a reduction in muscle pain. So I am going to keep at it when needed.

Yes, theyā€™re terrific! It hurts, but makes your muscles feel better. A friend who is a trainer told me the rollers work by bringing blood to your muscles and loosening knots and toxins. I found I need to drink alot of water afterwards, too, or risk getting light headed. Iā€™m so glad it helps you, Auburnm!

Hugs!

I love the ideas, they are so awesome. Thanks everyone for sharing. A couple of tricks I use, I keep my morning pain meds on my night stand and a bottle of muscle relaxers with Tylenol there as well. I find that if I take my meds a couple of hours before I have to get physically out of bed I am much better when I take them later. And I find that if I don''t have to move around the house to get my meds, I can prevent some of the pain kicking in and fall back to sleep easier. Having the Tylenol close at hand at night is great if I wake up in lots of pain I can just take something without having to move around a lot. Of course I have no young people in the house anymore to worry about someone taking it by mistake.

I use a lot of kitchen utensils that have been adapted for people with arthritis and find that helps greatly. I have tools to open jars, bottles etc. Specially shaped spoons that make it easy for me to stir and special knives that make cutting easier. I even found some pens on line that take the pressure of your thumb joints when writing. The jury is still out on them.

I am doing more pre-planning for outings. I go out for lunches with friends instead of dinner. Dinner is just to late in the day most times and I am too tired to go. I also plan activities on a Saturday so I can rest all day Sunday so I am not too tired when I go to work on Monday. I have started to carry my smartphone with me when I go out, in case I find myself feeling horribly sick or just can't go on, I can call for help. I use it even when I have the energy to walk to dog. Just my two cents. Have a great day all. ST

You made me smile. Thank you. I needed that

Silicone sleeves seem like a good idea... as for clothes I am male, so things are quite easy for me... it is called closing your eyes and grabbing random items! xx
