Nausea from pain meds

Because of my schedule, I put off going to the doctor for six months past when I was supposed to go. Because of this, I ran out of pain mess a while ago. I finally went and got my prescription; however, because I haven’t taken them in so long, my stomach has lost its tolerance for them. Any advice on fighting the nausea?

Hi Stephanie,

I have the same problem with pain meds. Even though I've been taking them for some time, I still get nauseous. When I talked with my doctor about it, he recommended that I split the pill in half and find a good balance (abiding by the prescription directions of course) that doesn't make me feel nauseous. I found out that taking 1/2 of a pain pill is the perfect amount for me so I still get pain relief, but don't feel sick. Did your doctor make any recommendations like that?

Hugs,

Sara

I’m not sure I can split it in half. It’s an extended release tramadol.

Ask your doctor for an anti nausea medication to counteract the nausea from your pain medication. I have the same problem and am prescribed promethazine. It works wonders.

Yes, Harley is right. I would call your doctor, let them know what’s going on, and see if they will give you a prescription for Phenergan (promethazine), which is the best medication for opiate-induced nausea.

You could first try to make sure you are taking the tramadol with food, but since it’s a long-acting version that might not work.

Oh, I know what you might want to try before Phenergan. Ask your doctor if you can take the regular Tramadol which is usually 25 mg to 50 mg 3x to 4x per day. Ask your doctor if you could start with lowest effective dose, maybe 25 mg 2x or 3x per day then build dose slowly (if needed) to prevent nausea. Once you are at the established dose then you can switch to the long-acting kind.

You might want to just make an appointment with your doctor, go in and discuss which option might be best for you.

Good luck!

May I ask you folks a related question? I am wondering if opiates help with your pain? My doctor refuses to prescribe them and I want to know if they help you at all? I am hoping I am getting enough pain relief from Lyrica. I still have a horrible crushing pain my back whenever I walk. I am not loking to get stoned, I just want to know if I am getting enough bang for the buck.

Hi Petunia!

The reason your doctor doesn’t want to give you “pain meds”, which means opiates like Vicodan, Norco or OxyContin, is because all the recent studies on using opiates for fibromyalgia shows that they do not help reduce pain. Fibro is now understood to originate in the brain, affecting the brains perception of pain due to abnormal levels of certain neurotransmitters. Opiates cannot help that and can create their own problems with physical dependence and other issues with long term use.

The one exception to this is the pain med Ultram, also called Tramadol. It is not a true opiate but it does bind to some opioid receptors and inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin (neurotransmitters in the brain). Tramadol IS effective in reducing pain for people with fibromyalgia. You might talk to your doctor about trying Tramadol if needed.

Good luck!

Well ....it certainly works for me. Been on oxycontin for yrs.

Zofran,phenergan H2 blocker like omeprazole???

for nausea....or a glass of milk works for me.....

I have found that candied ginger works wonders for nausea.

I take phenergan with my pain meds and it helps me.

@Stephanie_G I have a problem with nausea and I take Zofran (Ondansetron). Whenever you go into a hospital and they give you IV medication for nausea, that’s what they usually give. It works wonders for nausea.

@Starr is suggesting a great medication too. I remember being in the hospital with pneumonia and I was so sick a nurse who dealt with a lot of cancer patients recommended Phenergan.

I use to be on Tramadol a long time ago but my pain was severe to where I am now on other stuff.

Hope I helped.
