Pain Management

I'm relatively new to this group. But not new to Ben's Friends. This is the third group that I've joined: Lupus and Sjogren's Syndrome.

I've had my share of severe pain over the last 2 years. I have firbromyalgia, lupus, Syogren's Syndrome, autoimmune hepatitis, Raynaud's and several AI related medical problems. Each time I think I have pain under control, some new source of pain pops up. These have been managed by epidurals for spine pain, 5 surgeries for a hip replacement, pain management clinic, narcotics, muscle relaxants and on and on and on . . .

And, most recently I'm taking an antidepressant for pain that is working well at the moment and it's wonderful not to be in such miserable pain. Before the antidepressant, I was very close to no being able to walk.

In the hope of gaining some wisdom, I would like to hear other member's experiences.

You got to hold on!

Hello USAGurl,

Wow, you are dealing with such a lot, but glad to hear the antidepressant is working for you. Have you tried other therapies, such as CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy), Mindfulness relaxation etc? Gentle exercise, such as swimming? I'm sure other members will have more useful suggestions. Good luck.

Tke care, Anne

Hi USAGurl,

I love your positive affirmation that we got to hold on : ) Very true. I'm glad the anti-depressant is helping and you regained a lot of your walking ability. I have Fibro, Arthritis throughout my body and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I definitely know the feeling of experiencing some relief when a medication or treatment is helpful. One of my favorite things to do when I get home from a stressful day (which causes nasty flares) is to take a hot bath with Epsom salts. It is very relaxing and the Epsom salts help my muscles feel less tired throughout the day. I prefer the scented Epsom salts in the bubble bath section of the store. My favorite is lavender. The baths help me in the morning as well if I'm really stiff or have difficulty waking up. Another thing I have found to help is peppermint scented lotion with mint extract. The smell is calming and I love the icy/hot feeling the lotion has when I'm in pain. Aside from the more natural remedies, I also have medications, chiropractic, massage therapy and a specialist.

Hugs,

Sara
