I have had pain and fatigue since 2006 and got diagnosed in 2011. I tried the standard drugs - lyrica along with anti depressants. Although it didn’t do much with the pain, it gave me the worst sideaffects - brainfog, migraines, dizziness etc. I tried ayurveda, chinese herbal medicine, spinology adjustments and even past life regression (i know…). I’ve been told i am lazy by my best friends, my family whilst very understanding took a long time to know this was real thing I suffer, because I look healthy.
Anyway, long story short, I ended up trying several alternative therapies. The only reason I actually started joining fibro group is so I can share some therapies that seemed to work for me.
What I am suggesting below are just home fixes, nothing to spend and no side affects, no promotions for any products. I don’t subscribe to the theory of ‘no cure.’ I believe it just means doctors don’t know the cure yet.
- Fresh turmeric (it looks like ginger) - grate or crush using a manual crusher. 1 to 2 teaspoons in warm water, first thing in the morning. (fresh turmeric unlike turmeric powder is absorbed by the body and works on inflammation). I did this and it’s awesome…you can add honey if you dont’ like the taste. I directly eat the chunk of turmeric now a days. I don’t mind it. You should be able to grow this or find it in organic stores.
- Fasting - When we have so much fatigue, it actually feels like we need more energy, so we should eat better. But Ive only recently realised the benefits of fasting. I’d never fasted earlier in my life and i find it hard. I forced myself to do it once. I did a water fast, and in the evening had mild fruit. Everytime i felt like eating, i drank warm water. I got a massage to get through the day. I’ do regular massages to help with the pain but that day I needed one just to get through the fast. The weirdest part was that for few days after that I slept like a baby and felt like a human being. I didn’t do anything different, so I kind of put the two together. There’s lot of research on how fasting helps…See if it works for you. Maybe juice fasting if you can’t do water fasting. (I try to fast once every 15 days, trying to increase it).
- Acupuncture - If you can find a good professional, nothing like it. Although I find it’s affects are temporary and the damn fatigue and pain come back, although with less intensity.
- Swimming - to keep the weight off and it feels good. Although moderate swimming. I used to love it so much that i pushed to 20 laps only to lie in bed for a week.
- Yin Yoga - This happened once when I was in miserable pain, even a massage didn’t do shit. I pushed myself to go to a hot yoga class. We had a surprise class that day where a guest yoga teacher made us do Yin Yoga. It was the first I heard of it. Only 5 poses but holding them for 3-5 mins, and boy…by the time I finished class, I couldn’t feel the pain. The yoga teacher said that Yin yoga works by stretching on the connective tissue. She was a guest teacher though and I never got to get that class again, but if you can find one, worth a try.
- Scuba Diving - Yes, I am not kidding. I went to do an open water course. It was obviously a struggle to start with. I could barely lift my own weightbelt which was 3kgs. But i loved diving so much that i started working in the dive shop. within 2 months, I was lifting tanks, hauling stuff and felt an energy that I never had. I took only 1 day off in 3 months. I tried to analyse it, but could only come to two conclusions. 1. I was in sun all day, from 6.30 am to 4 pm. 2. The water pressure under water below 10 mts is twice, so I was quite possibly getting better circulation. Not sure what it was, but after 3-4 weeks, I could barely feel the fatigue or pain. I stopped working their, and everything came back.
I wanted to share this because I know what it’s like living with fibro. Please share if you have anything that works for you. I am always experimenting…Anything that can get me to sleep is all i need
