Trouble Swallowing

Since you've been having it on and off for awhile, it would be safest to have it checked by a doctor.

This website has some information about dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.

There are some other disorders that can cause problems with the muscles in your throat but require some genetic testing by a neurologist. An example would be Huntingdon's Disease, but that is usually one of the last thing they check for after all the others.

If I don't hydrate with liquids well enough it makes it harder to swallow the food. Most people are dehydrated and don't even know it.

I have fibro and have been having this problem on and off for years. This time however I was having problems with liquids which usually wasn’t that bad and it was making a gulping noise. My neuro thought is was the fibro mixed with GERD and prescribed some acid reducing medicine, my GP however was more concerned and ordered another swallow study, barium X-rays and referred me to a gastro doctor for an endoscopy and biopsy. The first two tests showed new problems with my esophagus which were quite upsetting :(. Has anyone had the swallow study done? This was my 3rd one. It showed a stricture (really weird to see) that could be scarring, Barrett’s Esophagus or a small flat mass. Needless to say I am very nervous about getting the scope and am putting it off until after my sons birthday in case there could be bad news. Anyone else been stricken with this situation and what was your results?

Dear Lilacs,

Sorry you are going through this, and had to go through the study three times! Sometimes it takes more than one test to get to the bottom of things. I hope that The final outcome will be of a much more positive nature for you. I understand your wish to keep your son's birthday a happy one.

I have not had this done, but with Sjogren's syndrome, can imagine that it may be in my future. We are all wishing you the best with the proceedure and please ask that you keep in touch with us on the final answer. Thank you for posting this, it may alert others to discuss this problem with their Doctor.

We are all here for you, wishing you the best!
