A cane

Hi everyone

So lately I have more and more trouble walking. I need help most of the time and can't get up the stairs on my own anymore.. I have to rely on classmates at school for the stairs. I was thinking to buy a walking cane. Cause.. it may help me walking all by myself and I may feel more stabel. Maybe it can help me taking the stairs?

I'm just only 19 years old. Does anyone have experiences with reactions of people in your environment? I'm really scared I get those angry faces and stuff on the streets. I'm scared people won't get the fact that I actually might need it. And I'm also scared for my teachers. Will they think I'm not able to do these studies? Although I study occupational therapy, so everyone should be understanding...

I don't know what to do with this. I'm scared. But I'm also scared for the fact I will fall one day and not be able to get up. I'm afraid of going out on my own, cause no one can help me when I get weaker. Could a cane help me deal with this?

Thanks a lot, I just kinda need some advice about it. And I just know that I can trust you guys on here.

Hugs,

Melissa

Ah yes, school. Want to fit in, Want to look like everyone else.

There are gonna be times when no matter what one does, there will be that 1 person that has to find fault of others to make themself seem better or feel better or prove that they are better than anyone. It must be a sad, sad life for them, hunh? To feel so unworthy of their life that they have to bring other's down?

I know how hard it is to go up or down stairs & it is crappy!!! In order for you to function go ahead & obtain your cane!!! M

Hello LittleFlounder,

Good to see you on here, my heart always goes out to you, you are so young, but obviously a strong person. Do what you need to is my advice. i believe you can get some really funky walking sticks! I suspect others will admire you, keeping up with your studies etc. If they don't, that is their problem. Let us know how you get on.

Take care, Anne

I have an opinion on mobility aids...if you are seriously considering one, then you should probably get one. Falls can be pretty terrible, and if you are unsteady on your feet, a good cane can really increase balance. You want to check out a real medical supply store for mobility aids, don't just hit the pharmacy. With a medical supply store, you can try all sorts of canes and get some good advice about pros and cons of different models. I got my first can when I was still in my early 30's, which I thought was still too young for a cane. But, I knew I needed it, and who really cares what judgments others make? They don't know your medical history or what your health needs are.

My cane has an ergo shaped handle so it is molded to the palm of my hand. It is the first and only model I have owned, and has worked well for years. The link is here:http://jessamedical.com/product/palm-grip-canes/

First of all, please take a deeeeep calming breath...then slowly let it go. Try another one or two, as they will help to center you.

In answer to your question, yes, I would recommend your using a cane if you are unstable on your feet. I use one and I can't tell you how many times it has saved me from toppling right over! And you can find pretty and stylish ones on the net. This is a company that I have done business with and they were prompt and professional in getting my canes to me. http://www.fashionablecanes.com/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw1pWrBRDuv-rhstiX6KwB...

They offer some nice canes.

EBay is another good place to find them. I just looked under "aluminum folding canes" (without using the quote marks) in eBay and found some very attractive ones. I have also found the canes with the cushioned handles to be more comfortable than those with wooden handles.

What will people think? Well, it seems like they are behaving poorly currently, so it doesn't sound like you have much to lose by using a cane. I always refer to mine as a fashion accessory, and have bought enough of them for it to be so. Raise your head in pride. You are a woman with a legit illness. You are a strong person to handle it and those who pooh-pooh you are ignorant. I doubt they could handle what you are handling, and not with good grace either. If someone blows up to me with an attitude, I am going to tell them that I have leprosy or something, to get them freaking out yet showing some respect, LOL! No, probably not, but I'll be sure to tell them that I have an autoimmune disease that has made my body very ill and weak. If they don't like it, Phooey on them. Walk on by, to quote an old song.

In regards to your teachers, is it really their place to pass judgment upon you if you are doing well? I personally think not. Telling an employer upfront might be another matter but that's another topic for another day. I personally think that as long as you can hack the studies, your teacher doesn't need to know about your illness, unless you want to tell him or her.

People have been very kind to me ever since I started needing the cane. I don't look as young as you but I've been told many times that I look like I am in my 30s...the point being that looking or being young doesn't necessarily sign you up for meeting rude and thoughtless people all of the time. I do find that being in good cheer makes others more comfortable around me. I always smile at kids who stare at my cane and even talk to them a little about it. You have an inconvenient illness, no more.

Hugs to you. I can see that you are very nervous about your future with fibro. Just think of yourself as a normal person who needs more time and rest. And allow yourself the luxury of using devices that will aid you, especially if they will keep you safer. Good luck, kiddo!

Hi littleflounder. I understand how you are feeling. I’m having to use my cane right now and it makes me feel like everybody’s eyes are on me, but it would be worse if I fell. I’ve had to use mine off and on for 2 years now. Thoughts of wheelchairs and scooters are also a fear of mine. Lots of hugs and prayers
