How Do You Use a Cane?

I know this sounds so ridiculous. I have to ask seriously tho.

When I downward spiral into a really painful episode it always effects my head, neck and thoracic spine...sometimes lumbar spine too. My arms are quite weak ever since the start of fibro.

So, if I'm up and around or out and about I am thinking I need some support sometimes. The thing is, when I put my weight on a cane my arms are taking the load, my head is so heavy and it can't turn very well. I just feel so darned awkward. Like, what's worse falling on face or hurting my neck and arms more by using a cane?

Can anyone relate? Any feedback from cane users?

Thanks so much. I just realized how silly this all sounds and made myself chuckle. I'm posting it anyway! LOL!

Kitty trust me it is not silly I do not use one now but I did for awhile when my hip was giving me so many problems. My physical therapist adjusted the cane to my height and showed me the proper way to use it so it would not affect other areas of my body. Is their any way you could see one? Their are so many types of canes maybe they can suggest one that would help you. I love the kitten coming out of the pot.

Hi Kit,

I think that the way you use a cane depends on what area of the body is weak, injured, troublesome. A Doctor or physical therapist familiar with your needs may be the best one to approach, but I did 'google' it and here is what I found!

I just gave you the entire page of possibilities, in hopes that this would give you the info you need!

Sending some love,

Most of the sites talk about leg pain, not general weakness and back pain. So do you think using a cane for the reasons I would like to use one is a bad idea? The cane I have is the right fit according to one video.

Have you ever heard of a theracane? Looks interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeH7u89GtcI

Do we have any physical therapists on here? Ohhh, I really don't want another appointment. Yes, I want some cheese with my whine.

Keep in mind that using a cane incorrectly could cause you more woe than actually making an appointment! Remember, the body is ONE UNIT, it's all connected!

You have a Chiropractor, right? Who knows your body better, your Doctor, your Chiropractor? I really think it's worth the appointment!

Thanks SK. I will do it.

Kitty, I do have to use a cane because of a bum knee and hip, but have hand and arm issues because of spinal issues. It makes those worse! One help to be steadier is to use a cane where there are four contact points, not just one on the floor. Also, with arm weakness, I've been told arm crutches are often more useful. Even heard of people using hiking poles too. I agree getting in to be seen is a great idea. I wish you luck.

Thank you ohsoperplexed. I appreciate your input. Makes perfect sense.

For now I seem to be doing a bit better. Although it's quite a step out of my SUV so I keep my Dad's cane in the front seat and use it to help me drop down out of the car. I'm sure it's quite a sight to watch! Once I'm down I put the cane back for my next landing.

I learned on some of the youtube videos that a cane should only be as tall as your hip joint or it should meet your wrist when dangling your arm. If not, using one can cause more trouble. Useful for you and I with arm and back issues.

I have seen the 4 prong canes. I will be talking with my doc in January.
