Getting a cane

So yesterday I bought a cane to help me walk when I am bad due to arthritis, fibro, and the other stuff that falls down on me like I am in a line of dominos. Anyway, I’m embarrassed that I am now to the point that I sometimes need a cane. I’m in my late 30’s and I am also struggling with how to explain this to anyone who may ask. Any advice or support is welcome and needed! Thanks!

First off, it makes you feel any better, and I'm not sure how it would, I'm in my late 30s. I don't have much advice, but the best canes are about half your height. If you're worried about how they look, you can get many different styles from Fashionablecanes.com.

Also, you're in that weird group where people are starting to have problems. Most people won't question it too much if you have a cane. At least that's been my experience.

Hello Olympia,

Just adding my support here, if yo need a cane, you need a cane.. doesn't matter what others think! I have friends who have canes, and it is not just for Fibro. I know you can get some lovely ones, get a few if you can afford - to match your outfits, it can be a good fashion accessory! I wish you well

Take care, Anne

Hi Olympia

I have a purple cane with skulls on it. I am probably around 10 years older than you. When people ask just tell them " I have ---."

Hi Olympia,

I know it is difficult when you have a cane and people ask you what happened to you or what is wrong .

When I use my cane and get asked I just say that I have a chronic pain condition and say thanks for asking . Most people don’t really want to hear much more and end up talking about themselves . I send you thoughts for all the best plus

HUGGGGGGGGGGS

I recently also had to purchase a cane myself , with my knee issues causing me to have 9 falls in the lat year I had no choice , it’s not pretty at all . I am 34 and I too hav struggled to use it, it’s there if I really need and I hav use it on really bad days but I understand where you are coming from completely like you’ve taking the next sto you weren’t ready fir yet and people can’t see it what’s going on with you so they do not get it. Us it when you need to , thinking of you .

Thank you all so very much!

I am early 40s and have had one for 2 years. I realized it was time when I fell in public (this time) at Walmart in front of the canes. Lol. Don’t worry what people think. I just tell them that i don’t like falling down. And then laugh.

i am 27 and i have a pinky red cane with white polka dots.I am embarrassed to use it but i do need it at this stage.I have arthritis and fibro so i know how you feel. You shouldn't feel embarrassed gentle hugs.

You have my sympathy as I know how you feel. Only I am double your age, and started using a cane about a year ago.

It is embarrassing at first, at least it was for me too, even at my age. It took a while to get used to it, and yes people will ask. I just tell them I have some health issues, and that has always ended it there.

Good luck to you, and I always tell myself when I feel down about having to use a cane, at least I am thankful I can still walk.

I am 34yrs old and my hubby bought me a pretty pink cane about 2 months ago. The kicker of it is when we venture out if it requires a lot of walking I have to use a wheelchair. Yes people do ask questions or stare but you just tell them you have health problems. It’s much better than falling all the time. Or a lot better than having bruises all over your body. I’m on blood thinners so I would be covered with bruises. I think I got more questions about the bruises than the cane. My advice is just find a pretty cane and own it!! No reason to be ashamed.
