Hi guys I was wondering what you guys do to keep weight off, because clearly we're not very active as we would want to be. I still live with my family and there's six of us so there's no being picky, my mom tries to get healthier food (crystal light instead of soda, ground turkey instead of beef) when she can, but as many of you guys know the healthier it is the more money it cost. So I was just wondering what everyone is does to stay healthy. I'm also thinking about doing water therapy (physical therapy was painful) it worked wonders for my little sister that has juvenile idiopathic systemic arthritis, so I figured I might as well try it since getting on a treadmill is out of the question for me. In short what do you guys do to keep from gaining weight? Is there anything you guys would recommend?
I asked my Dr. for warm water therapy...ins only covers so many physical therapy visits a year so I only have 8 left... my first appointment was Tuesday and it was nice... after learning what to do I plan on joining the gym their and doing it on my own...but I do not know about the results yet. I do know that my feet began cramping up during one set of stretches... my feet are an issue yet to be dealt with... I have a nerve conduction study scheduled for September...
I have been gaining weight as well and I am trying to keep simple healthy snacks around to stop me from just eating myself into misery.
Yoga! It’s hard but it helps build muscle and lose weight. It is a challenge for me but it does help
Another thing is ... instead of the treadmill do the bicycle...the one that sits more like a big wheel...they have a name for that one but I forget it... the elliptical and stair climber are also low impact so give them a try... remember to start out slowly...do not over do things... maybe 10 min. to start out and build from their. I will know more once my water therapy has ended I will get an exercise program from my Therapist and will share that with the group. You have to remember whatever you do, do it slowly. You may think it wont do you any good unless you push yourself but we cannot push our bodies like "normal" people do....and exercise does help us.
Lastly, get yourself a measuring tape...stay off the scales!!! Measure your waist, breasts, buttocks, legs and upper arms...if you stick to an exercise program measure every month for the changes. These are things I am going to do because getting on the scales really irritates me...lol... stay focused on a goal. I guess you will want to weigh yourself when you start...and maybe get on the scales each month...or 2 months...lol... but expect to gain weight first as you will build muscle...
Hope this helped some... Huggs, Belinda
I have heard that it helps, I'll check into it thanks! :)
That would work if I only had fibro I think, but I also have RA & scoliosis so even sitting for 5 minutes makes me uncomfortable and I start to hurt. And my knees and ankles swell so I don't know if I can do elliptical or stair climber when its already a challenge to walk. But thank you for your input, I will get a measuring tape, because I don't want to be obesssed with weighing myself (I'll check my weight at dr. appts.) & keep me posted on your water therapy please!
Hi Lili 22, my rheumatologist recommended an anti inflammation diet. He has a sign in his office that reads:
No Red Meat. - No Sugar - No Alchoholic Beverage
No White Flour -. No Sodas - No coffee
Drink Daily: Green Tea, Ginger Tea, Hibiscus Tea and lots of water.
It was hard for the first few weeks especially the coffee and wine. Now it's second nature. I just don't have these items in the house. I lost weight and I don't have as many joint flare ups. Now I just have to control the fibro flare ups.Stay well.
