Do you get a fever if having a bad flare-up?

HI everyone - Well, 4 days ago, after 2 weeks of hell - my Tinnitis in my right ear finally stopped. A lot of nausea and dizziness with it, certainly didn't make it any fun! Now that I am over it - guess what?? Two days ago, I got a really bad flare-up. When I get them to the point where I am in tears, I have the tendency to get a fever. The highest I have ever had is about 101.5. Of course, along with this I am not getting any sleep. I know I will be up for the portion of the night, so I settle down and read. This is always one time I am grateful for my love of books! Love, Laurie

I seldom ever register a fever on the thermometer, but I wake up soaked many times, and not because it is too hot in the room or I have too many covers, so I can only gather that I must have had a fever and it broke. Of course with me, having autoimmune disease means your immune system goes into hyper over drive and attacks my own body, so I guess all kinds of things can happen.

If fibro is like having the flu, I can only think that a fever is possible, but this should be discussed with your Doctor. There are some nasty flus and viruses out there too!

Hope you feel better, Laurie!

Well, here it is!

HI SK - Thanks for responding. I have had the fever problem discussed with my doctor, a specialist and my favorite nurse, Megan! (Smile). This has been going on for about 15 out of the 20 years I have had Fibro. I have noticed when the flare-up is really bad and I am very stressed over it, I get a fever. Usually aspirin will calm it down and then I feel better. Fibro, to me, does feel like flu sometimes. I just took a couple of aspirins about a half hour ago, and I am beginning to feel a little better. Hugs!!! Laurie

Laurie,

Are you sure you aren't sick with a stomach bug or something? The nausea and dizziness and fever kind of point towards norovirus or a flu. Of course, I'm not a doctor so can't say, but just wondering if you have something other than fibro for once?

I do know that Lupus can cause people to get fevers. That's the only autoimmune illness I could think of that a fever is connected to.

Best to ring up your doctor and see if he can see you.

Hugs and nice, hot tea,

Petunia

Hi Pet - I will be seeing a specialist soon. I have to wait for the office to call me to set up an appointment. My nurse, Megan faxed over a referral to them and hopefully I will hear from them. She wants me too, to be checked for Lupus. Until I joined this website - I didn't know what Lupus really was, even though I had heard of it before. Over the past several weeks - I have been seeing a lot of discussions about Lupus. I have noticed that it seems to connect with Fibro sometimes, in a way. Or the other way around? It's an autoimmune disease - isn't it? Can you explain to me exactly what it is? Thanks, Laurie

i have also studied trauma for a couple years and the more i learn the more i would say that my symptoms are old body memories of trauma coming back up... i used to have fevers frequently as a child and now (especially for example if i cry really hard) i will get fevers at times. it was more frequent when i was in a toxic abuse relationship. not to minimize the possibility of an illness that you should get checked out... but my experience is that the fever is like my body saying "you have had just too many toxic environments and relationships in your lifetime and i cannot take it any more!!"

of course, i can't afford any health care so ...there are probably lots of good options for detoxing but i haven't been able to pursue them. i just rest A LOT. i spend often 80% of my day in bed or a soft couch, just taking things really easy... that has helped me have less fevers...

Hmmmm, well, not really, since I don't have it but I can try to find a good definition for you that is not a medical thesis on the subject. I'll include a layman's definition at the end of this post.

Yes, you're right, Lupus does seem to tie in with fibro, Laurie. Sometimes a person can start first with fibro and then be diagnosed later with lupus. And sometimes a person can have lupus first and then go on to have fibro. Autoimmune illnesses seem to go hand in hand with fibro. I don't know why. Lupus is definitely an autoimmune disease, Laurie. Doctors are split on whether fibro is or isn't. It certainly seems like it's the gateway to other autoimmune illnesses, if it isn't one itself.

I'm glad you're getting this looked into further. Fevers alone don't mean anything but it's good to be checked, just to be sure. Let us know, please. I'll be hoping that your tests all come back negative.

Hugs,

Petunia

Lupus defined:

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which in layman's terms means that the body attacks and destroys its own tissues and cells because it cannot understand the difference between those and the "alien" materials that make us sick. Your joints, your heart, your lungs, your kidneys, and your skin get attacked by your immune system when you have lupus.

Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue. This means that your body's immune system attacks itself. It is mostly found in women usually between 20-40 yrs of age. The disease causes fever, painful joints, fluid in lung spaces with pain, kidney infections, cardiac problems, and neurological problems amongst a few. The thing to remember is that where ever you have connective tissue you have the potential to have inflammation. A common symptom is the butterfly rash which is a red patch found on the face. The disease is chronic with remissions and exacerbations (meaning it gets better and then gets worse or vice versa)
