Fever with Flares?

Do any of you run fever when you are in a flare or about to have a bad flare? I have run fever off and on for the last few months which made the doctor consider lupus but that test came out negative. My fever will be low grade, maybe 99.5 and I kept thinking I was havng sinus infections because I do have really bad allergies but it can be several times a week and last time I was already on a course of antibiotics. I read on another site that several people run low grade fevers. I’m new to all this still and trying to figure out my weird body these days.

I've run low-grade fevers my whole life, and the doctors have said 'some people just do'. But it seems they are common in Fibromyalgia and CFS patients, and autoimmune disorders. I think I've had Fibro since I was a child, so that might be the reason I have them, plus I think I also have CFS, just not diagnosed yet.

Fevers are also a side effect of a lot of medications-- but the meloxicam you take according to your profile is an NSAID, that should work to reduce the fever. It might be a good idea to mention this to your doctor, so he can investigate further.

Keep us posted!

I’ve either had fibro or thyroid or both for a few years but only really started having problems in the last year. I’ve had low fevers for 6 months or so. I never ran fever before all this even when I was sick so definately a change for me. I had elevated white blood count one time but normal the next so my doctor hasn’t been really worried and neither have I until I realized how often I was running fever. Just very odd.

It might be a good idea to keep track of the temps, it will help your doctor get more of the full picture. Your temperature will usually be lower in the morning and higher in the afternoon, maybe see if they follow that pattern. The more info you can give the doctor, the better!

Hi MrsK, when ever I am in a bad flare I get chills… And feel feverish, I know this is me, so I never check my temp, especially since I take a lot of Tylenol & Motrin I always figure it will mask the real temp anyway.
Are you having any other symptoms? Abd pain, n/v, any other symptoms that could indicate infection ?
Perhaps it is sinus ? Did your dr, try an antibiotic recently ?
I know when our immune system kicks up… Fever & chills follow… & I think with fibro our immune system is always over- active… Flu like symptoms are definitely on the list.
I hope you get some answers, lets us know, but I would def be in close contact with your dr to try and figure this out

Blessings

Hi MrsK,

From what I understand, people can test negative for lupus several times before testing positive. Also, being out in the sun for a little while (15-20 mins) prior to having the ANA test can sometimes bring on a lupus flare and thus, a positive result. Thus, people who are unsure if they have it or not and are having the test done will go out in the sun the day before the test to try to get a clearer picture. I'm not saying you have lupus, only that it isn't a clear cut test for everyone. If you go to lupus sites and read about this subject, you'll find people in very similar boats as you.

Other than that, I honestly don't know. I hope some of the others on here can help you more than I can.

Stumped,

Petunia

Oops. Well, maybe the rash is just from being out in the sun. Hopefully. I'll cross my fingers for you.

I do suggest that you sit out in the sun for a short period of time the day before your appointment, to see if there's any change in your ANA numbers. If you truly DO have lupus, it'd be better to know it ASAP and get treatment for it ASAP. But again, I'm still crossing my fingers for you, that you don't have it!

PS: And even 99 degrees F is still considered to be a temperature.

I don't have the fever, but I see a lot of people do have them. Lots of wisdom posted here.

Do you do sinus rinses during allergy season and/or for sinus problems? The rinses have saved me from several infections and I swear by them. They are not pleasant, but I would rather do a rinse in the shower than deal with an infection and antibiotics. Much easier on our bodies.

I hope you find an answer to your fevers. Hugs.

I get hot flashes over my upper body. I have never checked my temp, but they seem to coincide with flare ups.

Week before last I was running fever and thought I had a sinus infection or toothache, I couldn't tell for sure what and the clinic at my work gave me antibiotics but then I ran fever while I was on the antibiotics and we couldn't figure out why. I was hurting all over so I wonder now if that was just because I was feeling so bad.

I never heard about going out in the sun. I've had one person tell me you never test negative for lupus and then other people tell me they have tested negative before so I'm not sure. My doctor was pretty sure I had lupus but my tests were negative. She said she wouldn't rule it out completely and maybe test again later. I really hope its not lupus but I would make alot of sense!

I live in West Texas and we are very flat, dry dusty and grow cotton. I seem to live with a sinus problems from September to March. I get ear infections like little kids also but just one side. Just the left side. Until this last year, I never ran fever when I had sinus issues and rarely when I had ear infections. I've done steriods, saline, netty pots, nasal spray and allergy meds. I would rather avoid the antibiotics also. I read somewhere that fibro people are prone to sinus infections also? I can tolerate Claritin and that seems to help more than anything for me.

I was wanting to ask this question myself as I also have been running a fever of 99 on an off the last few months. I am new to this and also have celiac disease

Its almost like the low grade fever is worse. Just enough to make your whole body ache and eyes burn. For me anyway :frowning:

yes my body aches like the flu, more in my hands and feet

Oh that's crummy, MrsK. I personally find the muscle aches to be even worse than the joint pains so having them on a regular basis is awful.

You also mention burning eyes burning - I get that too when I'm exhausted and close my eyes. Eyeballs feel like they're burning up.

I hope you can get to feeling better, MrsK.

When I hurt I try to explain it so my kids and husband understand so my example of how I feel today is “I think instead of sleeping last night, I went to gym last night between midnight and 6am and walked on the treadmill with a 50% incline and never once stopped.” I’m that tired, my brain is that fuzzy and my legs hurt that bad. I’m half way thru my work day and trying to make it thru the rest of the day.
