Does Weight Loss Help?

I’m over weight by about 60 pounds, 20 of it came with changes in medicine. I am trying to loose weight but it is hard. I keep looking for comfort, anything that will make me feel better. I try to exercise by going swimming every day but sometime I don’t make it. I am have calculated that I need to eat 1200 cal a day to loose weight and about 1900 to not gain any. Either way ther seems to be no room for comfort food except a cup of tea. Back to my original question, does weight loss help fibromyalgia?

I am in the same boat as you . I am usually around 160 and now am at 200 pounds. I keep trying to loose the weight . I get 5 pounds off and next thing I know I am back up there again.

Maybe it is my age but I swear it is all this medication I am taking. What do you all think!!!

My doctor told me that she can only worried about how to control my pain and maybe later about my weight. And to expect to keep gaining weight because of my medications.

I think it all depends on the person honestly. I know for me I have lost almost 50lbs and I feel a lot of my fibro pain has been relieved; granted not all of it and I have my bad days still. I have to agree though, it is definitely not easy losing weight on fibro. I had to ultimately redefine my diet so I could have comfort foods while still keeping the cals and sugars down. Good luck on finding something that works for you!

Yes, in my opinion it does. Less weight for the joints to carry around = less stress on joints. Good luck, I've had a weight problem since forever, lol. And I know it's hard, maybe we could get a group together and help each other? Might be worth trying, Charlie :)

Great idea! I know my mom and I support eachother to eat healthy and exercise. She has not only lost weight but has more energy and feels great! When you have someone supporting you and you’re supporting them you feel obligated to stay with your program. I think helping one another is a fabulous idea!

I set up a group please join us as we try to help each other loose weight.

I set up a group weight loss and fibro. Please join so we can help each other lose weight.

Hi I have found that loosing 5 stone with slimming world did help with my general well being and my asthma symptoms. I now no longer use one of my inhalers and have not had a chest infection for 3 years.
I think being slimmer does ease the fm symptoms at times as well. I also take lots of dietary supplements.

Hi, Shaylynn. This is a great question. I am sorry you are struggling with weight gain from medications. I can tell you from my own experience it has helped me to lose weight. My feet have neuropathic pain and so, having that much less weight bearing down on them has been much better for my comfort. I also feel like I have more energy since starting on a weight loss plan and I have discovered along the way what foods exacerbate my symptoms. And, I can also fit back into my favorite little black dress! Watch out guys.

I do think it will help you in positive ways. Just be sure you discuss your plan for weight loss with your doctor and you are following safe dietary measures.

Good luck!

Hugs,

Laurie

I think that weight loss helps with general well being, I'm a little leery but that's a psychological hang up. My symptoms didn't start in earnest until after I lost 80lbs. Logically, I know that the weight loss did not cause it, but still, there's this part of me that's scared it will. I'm just being silly though. The benefits of losing weight, especially if you are significantly overweight, seems like they would be helpful.

I have been contemplating this same question lately too. I’m about 50 pounds over weight. 20 pounds I’ve put in the last 3 years. After awhile, you fight so many things you say the heck with watching my weight, and go for the comfort foods.

But have been really hurting and miserable, especially this last 2 months. And am wondering if dropping 20 to 30 pounds would help me feel better. If I absolutely knew it would decrease the symptoms of FMS I would have the motive I needed to somehow do it. But I have tried so many things, and it just seems like it gets worse, and worse.

A couple of years ago I lost thirty pounds using weight watchers. I found it helpful because you can have comfort foods and still lose weight. It’s about proportions and support. However, I stopped using it and gained it back. It’s also about lifestyle changes. I hate those :frowning:

I have had a weight problem my entire life. People used to tell me just exercise and watch what you eat...it will all be fine...lol. That was before my diagnoses of FM and PA. No wonder I have no energy. Anyway, the positive side of this is that while I still have a weight problem, I have been able to maintain a weight without gaining anything for about a year now. What I have found that works for me has been: I started off eliminating processed foods, like boxed dinners, etc. After I got used to that, then I started eliminating specific things from my diet. For instance, I am unable to tolerate much in the way of greasy foods or high fat. So, I didn't completely eliminate them, but I reduced them greatly. Another thing I got rid of was anything that has "diet", "low-calorie", "low fat", anything with Aspartame (nasty stuff) - I only eat real food. Real butter, real mayo, real peanut butter, etc. Of course, increase your veggies, but stay away from too many potatoes (they can make you hurt worse). I tried to eliminate caffeine, but that didn't work, so I did other stuff instead. This process has been on my own over the past several years, and I have now progressed to being gluten-free.

Funny thing about the gf diet, I lost inches and maybe 10 pounds, but that's it. We FM's have an EXTREMELY difficult time losing weight. Our bodies just won't do it, and we don't have the energy to do a regular workout program. :P

I hope this helps someone....if you want more in-depth discussion or have questions, I would be happy to answer anything I can :)
