Hi, I was put on topiramate, wellbutrin , and clonazepam (plus a lot of other meds), I have stomach problems but not related to the medications; however I have noticed that since I started taking these medications my hunger have decreased and also my weight. Because the stomach issues and not being so hungry anymore I eat less and I choose better food. I have lost 36 pounds which makes me very happy. Prior these meds my doctors had me on different meds including insulin. I was gaining a lot of weight and I was always very hungry and mostly for junk food. I have a lot of body pain and migraines so my exercise level is very low plus I live in Arizona and due to the heat during the summer I cannot be outside in the sun or in the heat because I get really bad rash and I get very sick :(.
I think a lot of the meds we take make us gain weight so when my doctors change my meds now I always ask what are the side effects and if gain weight is one of them because loosing the weight is very hard plus the extra weight it just makes my health problems even worse.
I'm so sorry your not in the best of places right now. I don't know if this will help you, but I was on Lyrica and it was going well for the 5 months I took it and then just out of the blue my legs and feet started to swell to 3 times there size. I bloated up and within a month my clothes were tight. Of course I went to see my doctor as hard as it was to walk and to find a boot that would fit me! Anyway, my doctor took me off Lyrica. It is now 5 months later and the bloating has gone away and my weight has stabilized. Thankfully, I had only put on 6 lbs. but I am sure had that not happened and I continued the Lyrica I surely would have continued to gain weight. Like a lot of people here I don't eat much...actually my taste for certain foods that I enjoyed before are things I don't crave anymore...particularly meat. Have you thought of asking your doctor to try another Fibro med as Lyrica is not helping you in this regard particularly since you went through all the trouble of having stomach surgery! I also think that a balanced diet is best. The fact that you don't eat much it's what you are eating that your body will retain as fat. I believe all medications have their pro's and con's and not every medication reacts the same for everyone, but Lyrica does seem to have the weight gain issue for most people who have tried it. Please talk to your doctor about your concern over this. Take good care and hope you find a solution that helps! Sue (aka Dreamcatcher)
You may want to talk to your doctor about stopping the lyrica. One of lyrica' known side effects is weight gain. Neurontin (lyrica's predeceasor drug has the same weight gaining potential). I have known others on these two meds who (without changing any of their eating habits) started to gain a lot of weight. It could be the culprit. You may want to try yoga to help your mind relax and get you moving slowly and gently with stretches, etc. Check out your local community fitness centers. We have some here where I live that actually offer a "gentle yoga" for chose suffering from arthritis, fibro, ra, and a host of other chronic pain conditions.
Apparently water exercise is very good for Fibro and not strenuous take a look at this website WebMD it provides info on all kinds of things that are good to do to lessen pain and lose some weight in the process. I think water therapy sounds like that may be something you can do. But you have to make the effort to get up and out! Again talking with your doctor if your still on Lyrica and what are some other options that doesn't promote weight gain. I'm on Cymbalta and so far so good! I mentioned in an earlier reply that I did swell, bloat and gain weight while on Lyrica and it remained in my system for many months after. I am just now starting to feel less bloated and no more swelling. So Alex I think with both of your posts you put up on the discussions board you have received some good advice. I'm sure something in there will help. There is no magic pill to lose weight as you know and will require a little work on your part! Best wishes and here's the website:
Hi...I had to get off of Lyrica for many reasons. I do take clonazepan that helps me tremendously. One thing I would like to throw out there is have you been checked to see if you have food allergies? I found out that I did. More or less it's being allegic to carbs. I am not eating gluten free and also watching how much wheat I use. Since I have been watching what I am eating; I have dropped weight...It's basically eating fresh veggies, frozen, or if they come in a can...but getting the healthy greens in your and fruit. Eating chicken, fish, and watch how much red meat you use. There are many gluten free snacks out there that are beloved (lol) brands; just look up your favorite big store and they will give you a list of gluten free products. You can order great snacks online; yes some can be pricey but you can find some that are not...It all sounds overwhelming but really it isn't.. I don't feel like I am going without food I always liked. You would be surprised just how many people are walking around with food allergies; sad. Just takes a few changes. Try it for a week and you will see a difference. It's something you can do on your own but bring it up to your physcian....and of course certain meds will balloon you up. Just wanted to throw that out there. I still have a long way to go but meanwhile I feel better for making better choices. Good luck and hope maybe it might help... Sissy
daughter was taking lyrica and she gained 40 lbs, now she cant seem to lose it, almost everything she tries to eat makes her sick. told her to get off lrica and tell dr to give her something else.
My self am very depressed today cant seem to get my mind to work. taking welbutrin and arthrotec . only meds that agree with me right now.
my family doesn't support me, thy say oh mama do something and get over it.
i know that keeping our weight down with meds that can make us gain weight is very hard. one mistake lots of people make is they dont eat thinking they will lose weight. skipping meals can back fire.
eat small meals and try to get in lots of protien that will help keeep u full. also eat good carbs like whole grain bread and potatoes. try to stay away from processed food as much as possiable. a good breakfast would be oatmeal with fruit, or eggs and whole grain toast with sausage or bacon. for luch a lunch meat sandwich or hot dog/brat a salad with chicken. dinner a meat of some kind potatoes or pasta, rice and a veggie. have snacks like yogart, pretzels, fresh fruit or veggies.
eating freuquent small meals. you could try weight watchers where u have so many points in a day. but have one day a week to have something special. i dont mean eat like crazy but have a special dessert or fast food.
the best way to lose weight is slowly. a coulple pounds a week. if u lose weight too fast it can come back very easy. i wish u the best of luck
I'm in the same boat and wanted to add that Nortriptyline also puts weight on you. (Since I was put on it, I've put on at least 20 lbs, and I was heavy to start with.) It really helps me to sleep but if your doctor suggests you try it, beware of the weight gain element. What a price we have to pay in order to sleep and to reduce our pain.
My sister did Weight Watchers and loved it. Now she's on the 5/2 diet. You eat a normal amount (not overdoing it) on 5 days, then eat 500 calories on two non-consecutive days. It supposedly reduces inflammation, cholesterol, blood pressure and several other things as well. My sis has 600 calories per day and already, after only a few weeks, has dropped several pounds and lowered her blood pressure quite a bit (hers runs low so lower isn't good.) I am thinking of trying it for 1 day a week and seeing how it goes. If I do, I'll let you know the results.
I hope this helps. I have a health nut friend who recommended an all-raw diet. Now, I can't go that far, but I have been eating tons of veggies, raw and cooked (mostly frozen, not canned) and fruit, and good proteins like fish (salmon and tuna especially) and eggs and nuts. Nuked or baked sweet potatoes are a great sweet with lots of fiber and vitamins. I eat lots of spinach both cooked and raw (Green Giant has the best frozen spinach in the world!!!)--plenty of protein and so many other wonderful things in spinach, plus it is anti-inflammatory, which helps the pain enormously. I minimize carby carbs (rice, bread, white potatoes) and sweets. This is easier in the summer, when I can replace something sweet and processed with strawberries and yogurt. This takes time to work up to. I had to work to substitute something healthy (like a salad) for something not so healthy (like a meatball sub). I have been doing this for a few years now and although I am at times so sick of salads and spinach I can't stand it. I know raw veggies can play havoc with IBS, and this is not an easy lifestyle, so take it slow and above all don't beat yourself up over your weight. You are beautiful and special, no matter what!!!
HI Tracey I do take water pill, but in the long run it harms your body. When I take it I drop 3 to 5 pounds of liquid......God BLess you and a BIG HUGGGG!
I know but my problem is How can I gain so much weight with a stomach surgery to reduce it, and eating so little.... It is difficult to understand..........DO not know why?
