I hate it when I’m labelled as lazy just because I’m limited by pain in my body, migraines and lethargy. I fed up with feeling lousy about myself. I wish my parents would let me make decisions for myself and give me more freedom. It feels like I’m studying what they want me to study and not what I actually want to study. Been to plenty of doctors and tried tons of medicine and nothing seems to work. Just because it is not visible doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or is imaginary.
Hello Deb
I hear you and your frustration. Are you in College or High School? It really doesn't matter, it's the fact that you would like to decide for yourself what you would like to study. That is tough when your parents are making the decisions. Are you going to a therapist? I'm thinking that you could discuss this with your therapist and could get some help in how to approach this with your parents.
Gentle hugs
Rachel
Hi Deb,
Welcome to the group, I'm glad you posted! I can understand your frustration! I think Rachel has given you some very good advice, as it sounds like you could use an advocate! Someone who can help you bridge the difference of age and thought between you and your parents! It's really a shame that at least one of the medical professionals that you have seen, have been able to make your parents understand how real your pain and fatigue really are! I'm sure they love you and have your best interest at heart, but they just cannot know no matter how much they read!
This illness is very controversial, hard to find Doctors who even have the same training, thoughts or concept of how all encompassing Fibromyalgia can be. It is very difficult for others to grasp the fact that we are not well, especially since it's not visible.
Don't give up, there IS a Doctor out there for you, who can make a difference in how you feel and how well you can live your young life! You deserve to be young and happy and as well as you can possibly be!
Wishing you well,
SK
Please study what you want! i get that they might want you to have a good job...but you also need to enjoy it or at least like it somewhat.
I love to hear what you are studying....in high school or College?
I get you want to be on your own and responsible for you own life....what you are going through is normal. If kids did not get in fights at this time in their life...kids would not get mad and feel frustrated and want to be on their own. Parents who generally do feel some sadness at their children leaving home would not want them to go at all. I think this is Nature's way of having children leave the nest!! so natural just is not much fun on either side.
have your parents spoken with any of your doctors who explained how real it is? If not i encourage you to approve (if adult) that it is okay for your doctors to explain about fibro to them. Once they hear it from doctors they might take it more seriously.
let us know how it is going and what is your major etc? wish you the best
I’m in college studying economics
no wonder!! lol! my niece just go a degree in that..one of her majors.
Soo why did they think that was such a great major? I am serious and what would you like to major in?
Is there something you would love to do with your life? You must be living at home and are you adult?
If not it limits your rights...why i am asking.
Do you have nice doctor whom you would trust to explain fibro to them? that would help you so much right there...now you need to decide about a job even college that works to assist your health as well as means to livelihood.
Hi Deb,
Just wanted to say I’m sorry and I know this whole
Condition is hard on every level.
We push ourselves to make others happy and all the while they have no clue
What it took and sometimes nor do they care.
It causes a lot of us to feel extremely frustrated and alone and for some, really depressed.
Because college classes take up your time and energy it makes it even more frustrating when it’s a class your not even interested in. UHGG…
There is something you can give them to read and then explain why it’s so important that your energy should be going to something that is working tip wards what you really want.
The litature is : My Story chronic pain… I’m sorry I don’t have the link but see if you can find it and print it out. I gave it to a friend and my parents. It really helped out.
Talk to me anytime. I will put in a friend request. My name is Lisa and I’m under the name Fibroerr
Take good care of you. Lisa
Economics is a difficult field Deb. I’ve had several former students get degrees in it. You must be smart not lazy. It is difficult for our families to accept the changes they see in us without some visible sign like something broken or a surgery, and those heal.
I ran my boyfriend and my parents The Letter To Normals that is on this site somewhere. It really got to them. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this at your young age. It’s hard enough being in college. I had two major surgeries while I was in college. I ended up graduating a summer behind, but I made it and so can you.
Not to get your hopes down, but I’m not sure there is one formula. You just have to keep trying different meds until you find the meds that work for you.
Hugs Deb and good luck with everything. Anyone know that link?
Be strong they won't always decide for you. Having their help may be so very important ,so cut them some slack .I don't know what they want you to study, but I hope it is math ,engineering or in the sciences.Be kind to yourself ,you deserve it.
Well said!! Sod what other people think if they cant try to understand what you are going through!!
Look after yourself Deb. I'm sure you're doing everything you can to cope with everything so if that's not enough for any judghmental "beep" they're not worth worrying about.
Its hard trying to work things out for yourself how to manage the fibro with life itself and studying, so surround yourself with people that help you not hinder you. At the end of the day its your life not theirs and you need to be happy.
Put your foot down and look after yourself. You have plenty of friends here to support you.
Hugs,
Jo
