Growing Pains

I just saw this discussion on a group on FaceBook and it got me to thinking. I remember crying at night with leg pain - it was awful and I couldn't sleep when I was a child. Does anyone else remember having this and being told it was growing pains? It may not mean anything but it is oddly similar to the Fibro pain.

I had horrible growing pains. My doctor told my grandmother at the time children with severe pains usually had problems later in life with autoimmune problems.

I do believe that many of us can remember things that happened as children that seem to be attributed to this illness. I also had an illness when I was in second grade - 7 or so. They called it glandular fever back then and I was out of school for over a week. My mother told me to tell people that I was ill and I have read that glandular fever was really mono. I believe that was the beginning of when I contracted the root cause of all of this. I remember so sick that I dreamed of nuns and it was the only time that my mother and I were in the drug store and I saw a doll and she said I could get it - no questions asked. I thought to myself - I am going to die. Heheheh. I remember sitting on our porch and watching other kids play because I didn't have the energy to run and play as much after that.

Hi Lovett - I always tell my hubby that one day they will look back and say "I can't believe how long those people suffered before an answer was found". I just hope it happens in our lifetime. :-)

Hi Linniepies, I used to get what we called “Charlie horses” when I was young and my dad hearing me cry out in my sleep, coming in and rubbing my legs until the cramps went away. This went on for some time. At 15 I got rheumatic fever and was in the hospital with a girl who was diagnosed with growing pains, she was about 13 and was about 5’8". They had originally thought she also had rheumatic fever but the tests for it were negative for her. Does make you wonder.

Yes! I was rold I had growing pains and remember my thighs hurting so bad! I also had bunions on both of my feet, and about 6 years ago my right foot started giving me problems with pain. Ibuprofen barely touched the pain. My PCP was out and I went in and seen his on-call and was sent to a posiatrist for surgery. I had the bunion removed 5 years ago, and to this day still have the same pain. I feel now that it was all my Fibromyalgia! I had a bad recovery from the surgery as well, compression fractures across the top of my foot, and had to be non weight bearing for an additional 6 weeks after my initial recovery from surgery. I regret having that surgery now, my foot will never be the same, and the initial pain is still there!

Isn't it amazing that so many of us have these same symptoms as children. I remember using Ben Gay and other things like that too and kids at school would tease me because it smelled funny. Doctor's never thought anything of it and just called it growing pains. I think we are on to something here.
