Holiday Stress Strategies

Ah, this wonderful time of the year. For those of you in the US, Thanksgiving is just one week away. And there are other holidays coming up as well in the near future. Holiday time is often a really stressful time for people (not just those with Fibro) with family expectations, shopping, meal prep, socializing, etc. Many people (myself included) can have increased stress this time of year. Combine increased stress with cold weather many of us are experiencing and you have the potential for Fibro flares. So I am wondering what strategies you each use to combat this? I will start off with a few things I am doing this year. First, I am not cooking Thanksgiving dinner, I am contributing money toward a family gathering. I decided the stress of preparing something (I don't like to cook anyway) is too much this year so I offered the host money and that was fine. Second, I am doing more online shopping for Christmas, this will save me invaluable energy. I am also trying to make sure I stay well hydrated and I am washing my hands about 50 million times a day (ok . . . .not really but you get the point). I got my flu shot early this year, I really don't need the flu or a cold on top of Fibro symptoms. Regarding the upcoming family gathering, I plan to bring my earphones and music so if I need to I will put calming music on. I am sure I might get looks but my health needs to come first and I will still socialize, just with the music on - this tends to help me keep my stress lower and helps dull noise which often can irritate me. So what strategies do you all employ? I look forward to learning new things to try!

I have found that pacing myself is my biggest help. I start decorating a lot earlier than I used to, doing a little bit each day. Learning to say no is another thing that helps. Only do what you really want to do.

Not trying to be superwoman is also good. I spent too many years exhausted from trying to do way too much and not taking time to rest.

Lastly, asking for help if or when needed.

Enjoy the season.

Hi, Auburnm. Great topic. I try to manage expectations placed on me or which I place on myself during holidays and in general. I think that is the one of the best skills I have developed during course of my Fibro. I let everyone know ahead of time what my needs are and what I think I’ll be able to contribute. I also ask for help if I think I am going to need it!

Happy Thanksgiving, All.

Oh, and thumbs way up for online shopping during the holidays, Auburnm. :)

Thank goodness for this thing we call the internet!
