Ibuprofen and Omeprazole

After a few months of increased back/side pain and hurting seemingly everywhere, I finally managed to get an appointment with my doctor, waiting 4 weeks for it.
Some while ago she thought the pain was from the Fibro and gave me tablets to take-which I had to stop due to side effects. Then the next time I saw her she thought it was due to nerve pain and gave me another tablet which I also had to stop taking for side effects.
So now, she thinks it is due to the arthritis in the spine, which she knew about 2 years ago from an ex ray. So now taking Ibuprofen and also Omeprazole which helps stop stomach problems (hopefully) Has anyone else been taking these two and were they beneficial. I’m feeling like I am never going to get a handle on all this pain. Paracetamol and Anadin just don’t touch the pain at all so hoping these will be some help.
Hope everyone is ok and not too bad today. Seems summer is over here and winter coming fast-saw Christmas cards on sale the other day!

Hiya Sue!

I know Ibu has helped a few people, but not many if it’s from fibro.
Her changing thoughts are illogical considering the reason you stopped the previous killers were not that they didn’t work, but that they caused too bad side effects.
Instead it’d be important to go thru each pain type more closely: If it is fibro pain there are 3-4 meds to try, each with differing side effects. These might also work for nerve pain. A common one used there is gabapentin/Neurontin, which is also sometimes given for fibro. If that didn’t work then again the other 3-4 fibro meds are viable. That’d be pregabalin, duloxetine, amitriptyline and praps milnacipran.
Sure hope something works. But a part of the pain of course we have to learn to live with with the help of ACT/CBT and knowing and avoiding triggers.

And Omeprazole might well help the stomach problems, too, short-term if it’s from acid/GERD. However like naturopaths I’d say antacids increase acidity mid-term, cos the stomach compensates. Also the GERD might not come from hyperacidity but already from hypoacidity: the upper stomach sphincter muscle doesn’t get enough acid to signal it has to close, so it lets the acid thru into the oesophagus (reflux should actually be abbreviated GORD in British English).
So as always I’d prefer all the natural alternatives for acidity, almonds is my favourite.
In the last post you mentioned you couldn’t take Omeprazole, tho?

I wouldn’t say goodbye to summer yet, here at least we have very cold mornings, but this week is dry and sometimes very hot in the afternoon and evening to night. That’s the time of year we lose our clothing etc. (if we’re out and about) cos we have to take it off at 11!

After the swifts have left us and the blackbirds and robins have been living as recluse in the shadows, the robins at last are coming out again, and from today on are not just subsinging quietly in the bushes, but singing openly and loudly, wonderful, reminds of spring and early summer again. And here another summer sign: All the butterflies are out, the whites, the red admiral, the peacock. We have less than in Britain nowadays, so I’m always happy about the days they’re out!

Hi JayCS,
I’m sticking with the Ibu for now, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the pain, not yet anyway. I don’t think the doctor has much idea as she keeps changing her mind on what it is.
I have tried many painkillers over the years, honestly can’t remember which ones except amitriptyline which knocked me for six and had to stop. And also tried tramadol which also had to stop taking, not sure about pregabalin, maybe one to ask her about next time I manage to see her. I’m trying to live with the pain, but not too easy as it impacts on everything.

Definitely colder mornings and doesn’t seem to warm up too much later on. We have mostly sparrows here with pigeons and crows as well. Don’t see many butterflies lately either, but lovely when do see them.
Hope you are ok,
SueT.

I wouldn’t give Ibu long, either it works or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, it’s harming.

Hope you’re having an OK day!

Hi JayCS,
On the box it says take up to 6 Ibu a day, but so far have only taken 2 a day and will stick to that I think. The pain does seem to have eased a bit, so it’s a dilemma. Think I will stick with it for a while with the omeprazole but not taking 6 a day. The last tabs I took were Duloxetine and couldn’t take them for long either, so annoying. When you want/need ‘something’ but the doctors have no idea any more, than ‘just live with it’.
Hope you are having an ok day as well, we have nothing but rain and thunderstorms.
Take care,
Suet.

Hi SueT. I am sorry you are in so much pain. Living with pain is not easy. I also have arthritis of the spine but I am unable to cope with medication. I am not able to take Ibuprofen because you cannot take it if you are alergic to asprin, which I am. I take Omeprazole because I suffer from pancreatic insufficency. My body does not make enough enzyme tablets to digest food. The omeprazole tablets lines the stomach to help with the artificial enzyme tablets I must take when I eat. (That’s if you can get the enzyme tablets as there is a manufacturing problem which has caused a nationwide shortage of them) I find it easier to cope with pain knowing what the name of it is, like arthritis. Most people do not know what Fibromyalgia pain is and they look at you blankly but if you say it is your arthritis pain than you are more likely to get a better reaction! Whether it is arthritis or Fibromyalgia pain it hurts!!! I do hope you get some relief for all your pain and I wish you all the best.

Hi Rosebud74,
Like you I can’t take strong painkillers from the doctor, and have tried quite a few. I think the Ibu and Omeprazole are the last things to try. Two weeks in and not 100% sure it is helping, but as there doesn’t seem to be anything else, will cross fingers and keep on for a while. Doctor says because the arthritis is in the spine (and other places) the pain ‘radiates’ around the body like wearing a strait jacket! Didn’t think much of that.
Everyone looks blank when I mention fibro-a friend said the other day ‘but you look ok and well’. I didn’t shout at her, just said that I might ‘look’ ok, but don’t feel it.
Hope you keep getting your enzyme tablets without problems, and are having a reasonably good day.
Take care, SueT.
