Medication Change

I went to my Rheumatologist today and he switched me from Gabapentin to Lyrica. I’m supposed to stop taking the Gabapentin immediately and start the Lyrica. Any suggestions or what has been everybody’s experience on Lyrica?

hey Trea. i was taking gaba for many years because of grand mal seizures. then i went to neuro doc who switched me to lyrica. however i seem to recall that i tapered off the gaba for a couple of weeks while introducing the lyrica. He said the lyrica will provide me with the seizure protection i need and help with the pain. however i took it for a couple of months but gained too much weight and that was not acceptable for me. keep in mind that everyone is different. no 'one size fits all'.. gaba and lyrica on in the same family of drugs..- anti epileptic . many of this family of drugs and many anti depressant meds are used to treat a variety of symptoms, one of which is pain. please do check on how to taper off the gabapentin.. best of luck to you and HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGS

My doctor told me to completely to stop taking the Gabapentin and start the Lyrica. I even asked him about tapering off and he said I didn’t need to. I only have about 10 Gabapentin left. It makes me wonder if my doctor knows what he is doing.

Hi Trea,

I can only speak from my experience with Lyrica. My old rheuma put me on it and after 2 doses I didn't know where I was or my name. I stopped it immediately. I found a new rheuma who explained that Lyrica only works for about 20% of patients. I was then put on Tramadol 50mg. 1-2 every 4 to 6 hours....works wonderful! Hope this is helpful.

I have been on Gabapentin since May and I have been taking 600mg twice a day but lately I have been only taken 600mg at night. I did end up calling my pharmacist and I told him I had 15 pills left and he told me how to taper off of the Gabapentin. My rheumatologist had no clue about tapering off of Gabapentin.

Tramadol doesn’t work for me. I don’t know what else to do a at this point. I know there are many different options out there. I just need to find something that will work for me.

Hi-

I have just been put on Gabapentin ... I take 300 mg... 3x day but the Rheumy said I will need a higher dosage...

I am new to all of this... you are the first person I heard mention it and now I see others take it too, does it help? any suggestions or warnings about Gabapentin?

I hope all works out with your medication change

thanks
