Medication Question

Happy Holidays everyone!

My family doctor just recently prescribed for me FLUoxetine 10mg ( sub for prosac, i think). It is the first time I have ever taken an anti-depressant type medication, and I certainly have my share of reservations. I have been taking it for 2 weeks now, and have yet to see any noticeable improvement in my pain level. I am eager to hear if anyone else has had any success with this same medication, and also any negative effects I should be watching out for. I seem to have some numbness / tingling in my feet since starting to take this medication. One things for sure, if you read the paperwork that comes with the medication, you want to toss it out the window, rather than deal with most of the possible side affects.

Hi Tweety, if you search Prozac in the discussions search box you should pull up other comments on it. I took Prozac many years ago, before I was diagnosed with Fibro. It did help some with depression but took about 6 weeks as I recall to be effective. I do remember seeing other members post on this topic so hopefully you will get some good response. Please keep us updated on how you are doing. Hugs!!

Hello Tweety,

Hope you are having a happy holiday too.

I used to take fluoxetine a few years ago, for depression. Fortunately I didn't suffer any side effects, and when I was in a happier place weaned myself off it without any problems. My experience was good, but I didn't have pain at that time, so can't comment on that one. I do know you might have to take it for a few weeks, before you see any improvement. Good luck, and let us know how you are doing.

Take care, Anne

dear tweety ~ i take an antidepressant now...Celexa...and it helps me stay active and helps me to get my mind off of the pain. i do not think that it actually affects the pain level but rather our response to it.

every prescription i've ever seen has a long list of side effects so i no longer read them unless something odd happens. i wouldn't worry about it too much. i know that those of us with fibro feel trapped in our bodies and are super aware of anything going wrong. when my mood is good, i think less about my body and more about life.

i hope this helps....hugs, annie

hi tweety.. all good responses from the rest.. many anti depressant meds and anti seizure meds are also being used to treat pain conditions as well. Many folks get good results but everyone responds differently and some have to go at different paces as far as starting doses. My hubby always tells me to stop reading those leaflets about the drugs as the lists are so long as they must list side effect if even one person in millions gets one.. lol...But i dont blame you for wanting to check anyway. i know i do. Always best to keep track of how you are feeling and if something is too different then contact your doc to make sure of yourself. all the best. HUGGGGGSSSSSS

Hi Tweety,

I recently started taking an anti-depressant (Escitalopram) for my Fibro and CFS. It has helped me a great deal. It can take some time for medication to kick in and really starting having an effect. Great comments from everyone else! : ) It has really helped me be more active, less tired and I feel like I am in a better place emotionally with the medication. I don't feel so "down" all the time. I still have chronic pain and it doesn't do much for the pain with me. My therapist's primary target with the anti-depressant was the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I'm taking less naps and I even went 4 days without having to take a nap.

Thank you all,

Sorry it has taken me a while to do this, but thank you all for your replies to my question. I appreciate each of you taking the time to share your experiences with me. It's great to have you all out there to lean on!

Hi tweety. I was prescribed prozac a few years ago. For me it didn’t help too much with the pain and gave me CRAZY vivid dreams. It was horrible!! The inly antidepressant that helped was escitlopram.
