Muscle Spasms / Pain

In addition to checking with your dr and pharmacist about your me list--I really suggest checking out this site:

http://reference.medscape.com/drug-interactionchecker

or another like it. I had no idea that Benadryl can block Tramadol until I went on this site. Neither my dr nor the pharmacist knew anything about it. Many people who have checked with this site have found as many as over 20 interactions with their meds that the drs didn't mention. I was able to cut down on how much tramadol I took when I stopped the Benadryl. If I do take it, I make sure I take the tramadol 8 hours after Benadryl. Benadryl, 4 hours after tramadol.

Hi Mom52,

What you are describing, pain on one side going down hip, back of leg into calf, are classic symptoms for sciatica. You may very well have a disc problem. When the sciatic nerve gets compressed for whatever reason, those symptoms occur. I would get in to see your doctor as soon as possible, maybe you can get a same-day appointment on Monday. Or else go to Urgentcate.

Good luck,
Starr

Welcome to the 101 million mysteries of fibro. Yes, those cramps can jump around, even rapidly. I wonder if you have been unintentionally putting more of your body weight on one side than the other, hence the cramps? Arthritis or tight muscles might be the starting point. Or maybe a foot issue? I am just going by the triggers of mine.

Maybe it's switched to the left leg if you have been putting more pressure on it due to the other side bothering you so much?

One other thought: I also get them sometimes due to sitting on an uncomfortable chair. I must shift my body a certain way and end up with cramps in the calf.

These are just stabs in the dark. Really, it might be a good idea to run it past your doctor.

But it's not odd for fibro pains and cramps to jump around. Unfortunately.

A lot of people recommend magnesium and potassium to counteract the cramps. I also get them when I am dehydrated.

Hope some of this helps you!

PS: some fantastic advice on here for you from others! I had no idea about the blown disc/pinched nerve and/or sciatica connections. Sure sounds like a great idea for you to get those cramps checked out ASAP.

Hugs,

Petunia

I would see your doctor about these too, but I find that some Tonic Water helps me with leg cramps. It has Quinine in it which is known to relieve them.

I understand. I'm learning new things about Fibromyalgia as my condition progresses. Like you, my right leg kills me. It feels as if there is a nerve in the middle of my back that sends pain over to my right hip and down my leg. Lately my foot has been going into spasms as well. You're right the pain is unbearable at times. Lately my number one complaint is the unbearable pain in my chest. It moves from the cent of my chest over my right breast and down my right arm. Like you said, the pain goes down my arm then starts over again. The pain is bad. Real bad. I have the sweats, tiredness and fatigue and pain most of the time. I have no idea if Fibromyalgia can cause the level of pain I'm experiencing, all I know is the level of pain is not on a scale of 1-10. My pain is on a 15. I can use a friend, what about you?

Mom 52, trying using ice or heat for the pain. I use them both.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I have had surgery already for sciatic nerve and dont think that is it. This is different. This moves around. I will try magnesium and i have deffantly thought about writing down what i eat to see if there is something there. I also wondered if it could be due to driving alot. Since i have been traveling for work. I am also going to look for the epsom salt lotion. Cee i can always use a friend.i could not get thougt some of thes things with out having friends like yall to talk too. Thank you! Mom52

Your medications could be exacurbing your muscle spasticity. After trying every medication on the market, TENS, potassium, magnesium, I continued to have very painful muscle spasms in my legs. It was then that I examined my medications I found that any medication that causes dry mouth increases painful muscle spasms. It will take a while for the medication(s) to be flushed from your body, but you will see a gradual improvement in your legs. Although I continue to have muscle spasms throughout my body, I no longer have the unbearable pain in my legs that jolted me out of bed and forced me to painfully "walk it out". It is also a good idea to keep an RX diary to keep track of medications that are ineffective or have intolerable side effects. Good luck and remember to communicate with your physician.

I had increased muscle spasms in my legs really bad when I was trying cymbalta for fibromyalgia several years ago. The doctor insisted it wasnā€™t from that, but it was the only new thing I had been taking and when she increased the dose the spasms got worse. So I took myself off it and within a couple weeks they got better and then went away. It was awful. Go with your gut feeling. Several years later I now know muscle spasms can come from mineral deficiency. Magnesium deficiency is one which many people suffer from and donā€™t know it, and it is unlikely to show up in the blood so you have to follow the symptoms. Magnesium Malate by Source Naturals may help you. I took this myself for a while and it seemed to help with some fibro pain. Also, I suggest keeping your feet and legs warm. This helps relax the muscles.

Mom 52, I'm so glad to meet you. Know that I'm praying for you. Do you know if anyone is suffering from pain in the chest or anywhere?

I have back problems and had surgery 5 yrs ago. These muscle spasms that you are are describing sound like sciatic nerve problems that can be caused by different things, the issue is that something is pressing on your sciatic nerve and from your back to hip area and down the back of your leg, There are things you can do to help physical therapy can help with teaching you stretching exercises. Water therapy is also a big help and your Dr can order those so your insurance will pay, i also attend yoga classes which help a lot.

Vitamins are a big part of improving symptoms, i get weekly B12 injections along with Vit D,potassium .& magnesium which are over the counter. The B12 injection would have to be given by your Dr. office. Im a RN .so I give myself the shots. Make sure when buying vitamins OTC you talk to your pharmacist and get FDA approved ones. I take epsom salt, mixed with lavender essential oil, and lavender baby bath. Very relaxing!!!!

Hope your feel betters soon! Hugs!l

have you ever tried a tens unit for pain management check with your nuro doctor they are a little on the pricey side

about 300.00 cheaper with good health insurance.

THis mom52,

Try massaging with a topical pain cream!

Hi. I have this problem all the time. Partially due to spinal issues, partially from fibro. Even had when I was little. ā€œGrowing painsā€ they called them. My mom used to massage my legs when I was younger now my husband does it for me. Gentle massage but it seems to help temporarily @ least.

I bought my TENS Unit for $30 at an online discount medical supply store

HI again. My TENS unit does help quite a bit. Before you shell out the money however many insurance companies will pay for them. Medicaid paid for mine. If you try pain therapy first it's easy to get one prescribed. Also there are prescription creams that help immensely with this kind of pain. I use one now that is a mix of several meds applied topically. It doesn't effect you mentally that way. Great stuff. Never spend your own money until the insurance company refuses to spend theirs. That's what they are there for. Most Docs are very good at getting it out of them too. As far as home remedies be very careful. Some of them are just down right dangerous and a little scary. I know we all want relief. God on a day like today I would almost sell my mother for it, but you have to use common sense. If it sounds out there, if it sounds dangerous it is. Rather to live with the disease than die from the cure. Be blessed everyone and take care of yourselves.

The spasms are mostly in my left leg but not exclusively, my left leg is just the most bothersome. The spasms are not as bad but my foot is numb now. I have started eating bananas for some potassium, and am curious about the magnesium supplements. I have wondered if I should take b12,and vitamin d too. I joined the weight loss group and have wanted to go on gluten free to see if it would help overall. It has just been a lot adjusting to my new lifestyle, realizing that I have probably had fibro much longer. As much as it has progressed in the last year I often worry about what my future brings. So I want to try anything that will make it better for as long as it helps. I thank everyone of you for all your suggestions. I will definitely mention to my dr too. I donā€™t think I have done anything differently other than driving more. I have had a couple off days off, so thinking that has helped.
Gentle hugs to all!
Mom52

I know I feel like I have a tight band around my chest sometimes. Mostly when I over exert my upper body muscles. I am sure others have the same but I have not asked because my dr told me it was common and that was when she put me on lyrics. I had some symptoms from the lyrics so she lowered my dosage and am doing better overal but have to take a pain med 2-3 times a day now. I still have weird things that come and go. Like the spasms, skin sensitivity around my eyes, eatā€¦ Thereā€™s always something it seems. Mom52

I have muscle spasms and the only thing that helps me is medical marijuana. I have tried muscle relaxers and they do not work as well. Hopefully you are in a state that allows you to get a medical card because it is the only thing that seems to help with my fibro pain, stiffness and muscle spasms. I know that this may controversial but I am just sharing what has worked for me. I was diagnosed in November of 2013 and at first tried all of the medications that my Dr gave me and most of them had such horrible side affects and such little relief that I have given up most of them. But, this is what works for me in addition to light exercise, yoga and eating clean. I hope this helps you. My symptoms move too, not sure why but it is different every day and it makes it hard to plan anything.

I empathize with your pain, Mom52. My back and leg problems have gotten much worse since FM and arthritis have limited my ability to move as much as I'd like. My pain seems to start around the upper back curve of my hip bone, travel through my buttock, down the outer side of my thigh, down the back of my leg, and through the arch of my foot.

Here are some things that work for me, including some that others have mentioned:

I find I need the combination of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin D3 to keep the worst cramps (especially the night cramps in the calves) away. But when I do wake up in agony at night I find that Pedialyte (in the baby section) helps in less than an hour.

Heat helps sometimes, but not always,

My therapist taught me several stretches that help in the morning to make it possible to get out of bed before my bladder bursts. Lying on my back I tighten my leg one muscle at a time, starting with the hip, working down my leg, and ending with a flexed foot. Relax, then tighten the other way, starting with pointed toes on one foot, then the calf, then the back of my leg. I repeat twice on each leg. I'm always amazed at how much that little stretch helps.

Hope this helps.
