Suggestions for Work Place Conversation on Fibro?

Hi Jean, sorry for the miscommunication - I meant to reply to the original post regarding fibromyalgia as an excuse. It sounds like you have had quite a lot of experience; I’d imagine it would be very challenging to care for someone else when you are also suffering. I admire your kindness and dedication.

FMLA is the Family Medical Leave Act. In the USA employers above a certain size have to allow employees to take leave for medical reasons. The leave is unpaid but the employer supposedly can’t fire the employee for taking it. An employee is allowed 12 weeks of unpaid leave in a twelve month period.

I’ve heard the US is actually way behind almost every other country regarding medical leave in that leave in other countries is paid.

Hi DKeng, No problem it is easy with modern communication to get the wrong gist of something and have done it many times myself! I think each country tells people what they want to hear and I can assure you that we have nothing like FMLA. Our daughter has to take holiday for her medical appointments, take time owing OR go sick which would impact on her work absentee record. Many of our group have had to leave their employment as they are unable to get the support they need from their employer. We have Disability Living Allowance for 3-16 year olds and has now been replaced by Personal Independence Payment for those over 16-64 years. to Qualify for the mobility component now, patients have to declare that they are unable to walk for more that 20 yards with an aid such as frame, crutches of sticks. If you can do this you no longer qualify, this means that those, like our daughter, And many Fibros, MS patients and those with Parkinson's etc. who are unsteady on their feet, cannot stand for any length of time or walk far but in severe discomfort, no longer qualify for an allowance for a car. Without this it means that they cannot go to work without their own car (if you have the money) are no longer able to have a disabled parking badge so cannot park near to the shops etc. and cannot always get out of their car in a 'normal parking space as they are too narrow!

Sorry I could go on all night but believe me each country is cutting down of benefits for the genuine disabled person but the 'cheats' still manage somehow!

I just recently told my employers about my recent diagnosis with Fibro. I work 12 hours a day 3 days a week. They weren’t happy about it. Basically, they stated they will let me go because they can’t risk me falling at work because of my fibro. I explained it doesn’t cause me to fall but they then stated their gut was telling them that they weren’t sure about making accommodations for me now that this has come up. So now I feel like I have to push all of my pain and my health aside just for this stressful job.
So after all of this, I’m unsure whether to stay at this job or try to go to a part time one.
