I work in in pain, nothing new, but my hands and arms were weak, I could not grip they would not work. I pour a drink to take my medicine. …then the glass falls out of my hand breaks drink goes everywhere. I’m in shock my hands won’t work! I’m a Secratary. I call my boss and she was rude and UN sympathetic as always. Does she think at 35 I want this? I need to support my kids? People are just so ridiculous and stupid. I’m sorry for name calling its just frustrating.
Necee,
I am so sorry others are not understanding of your condition. It isn't right, but unfortunately most people lack empathy. I have been through it as well. One time I use to work for a bank in their mortgage department as a temp and another full time employee actually told everyone I had AIDS which is not true I have ITP(blood disorder that attacks platelets but turns out it's a vit D deficiency). I was forced to quit because the conditions got too bad...socially. I have other work experiences but this one topped em all, by far.
Is there any way you would feel comfortable helping your employer understand fibro? Maybe by printing out the symptoms for her? Is there someone in HR you can discuss this with or is the company too small for an HR dept?
Love Always!
Kisses! (I like to be different)
Hi Necee
I am sorry this happnd to you. Have you talked with your doctor about this symptom? Their could be another cause for the weakness.
Hi Neece, I am so sorry this happened. I have found my hands and wrists have gotten really weak and I drop things as well. Something that has helped is I started physical therapy with someone who knows about Fibro. We are working to build up core muscle strength (very slowly so it is manageable and so far hasn't thrown me into a flare). It is slowly helping I think and I am not dropping things as often. Of course, you probably should make sure your doctor is aware as well just in case they want other tests. Hugs!
Thanks guys, seeing a rheumatologist in November. My boss said she never heard of fibromyalgia. I told her to Google it. I will be getting future test.
I hate this for you and I understand how you feel as far as struggling to work. You’re not alone. I’m almost 30, and I’ve struggled so hard this year with trying to work and missing periodically. I keep worrying that my boss will finally get fed up with it. If I wasn’t paid hourly I’m sure she would have by now. Have you looked into disability at all? That might be an option, especially since you have kids. I’m checking on it, even though I’m scared about how I’d make it while waiting to try to win my case. Hope things get better for you with your hands! It’s frustrating enough to have fibro in general at a young age, much less extra weird things like that. Keep us updated if you think about it.
Hugs and prayers!
Karli
Like Purplebutterfly mentioned, the weakness in your hands should be assessed by a doc. It's great that you have an appt with a Rheum, but is there any way that you could make an earlier appt? The worst they can say is that they don't have any openings, but even then many docs will take your name and call you if they have any cancellations. If you are in the US, The other thing that you might want to look into is getting some protection under the FMLA. It offers you 12 weeks of unpaid leave if you need to take off for personal illness or to care for a family member. I have FMLA papers on file with my employer, so if I need to take a day of leave, I can take it without fear of any repercussions. Your employer may even need to make accommodations for you to make it easier to do your job. For instance, they might need to get a dictation software for your computer so that you can use your computer with voice commands instead of having to type.
Personally, I have also had problems with weakness in my hands and wrist. I use lightweight braces for my wrists. They are actually for folks with carpal tunnel syndrome, but they do provide me a little more support, so I'm a little less klutzy. There's a link to them here:http://http://www.braceshop.com/ossur-exoform-carpal-tunnel-wrist.htm?origin=pla&unique_id=51707X&gdftrk=gdfV28018_a_7c2568_a_7c10961_a_7c28851&gclid=CJDrrfTk9cACFQto7AodgVIANw. I got mine from a local medical supply company, but this is the same brace. I also have a wrap that goes around my drink bottle and helps me get better grip on it. You could use anything, but I used the sticky sports wrap that comes in different colors from the drug store. Its inexpensive and I can change it whenever it gets dirty.
I hope you start feeling better soon, and get some good info from your rheum appointment.
I do have fmla…and yes that the soonest, I am on waiting list for a sooner appt . Thanks feeling better
