Drug free options?

I know there might already be a thread on this but I could not find it. So far I have struck out on neurotin, just made me sick all the time and cymbalta which was a train wreck. As I found out with pain killers, my body does not like drugs that can help me. So I am staying clear of all prescriptions and going al natural. So is anyone else on this path and even if you are not, what are some natural remedies that have worked for you? I don’t want to end up buying snake oil from some company promising the world so any input would be greatly appreciated. FYI I run the whole gambit of issues from over sensitivity to joint and muscle pain.

Bombard me.

There is a thread on supplements that we take, it's on page two or three. You might want to check it out as you may find some helpful answers there.

Good luck!

Hae PapaJim. Check out this discussion. I think it runs the gammit of supplements. Good luck to you and let us know what you find to work. I would love nothing more than to stop taking the prescriptions I am on now. I'm on my way to letting them go, but it will take awhile.

Good question'

Hi PaPaJim,

I'm like you, every med that I try I end up with more problems, some really severe. The last one I was on was Savella, and I'm convinced it is made in hell because it tried to kill me. Right now I only take Neurontin, and I don't think it's doing anything but making me worse, but I keep taking it out of desperation. I'd like to hear if you find something that works for you, keep us posted!

Ok so I crammed alot of reading into the past week. Ran into many companies claiming to take this or that cover-all pill. I am not real keen on these because there are loop holes in "nutritional supplement" labeling that they don't have to list all of the ingredients. I have chosen to take a series of separate supplements from GNC that I know whats is in them.

Here is what I am going to be taking;

B12

Melatonin

D3

Ribose

Magnesium

Omega 3

and SAM-e

I am starting one pill at a time to see how they affect me individually so I can watch for side effects. I have taken melatonin before so that was a given. At 10mg it knocks me out in 45 mins or less and I sleep soundly through the night. Now you can fight through this so you should take it when you are ready to settle down and let it work. The reading I did said there was also some benefits that occurred throughout the day but they were not specific.

I have also added 1200mg of B12 in the am. These are sublingal tab that dissolves under the tongue. It is important that you take it this was as the stomach can digest and disrupt the absorption of B12 in the body. Since starting these I have not had the "mid day blah" that I was suffering before. I am going to add a second tab in the afternoon. It is important not to over take B12 as it is water soluble but is stored in the liver and can cause issues if you take too much.

I will update this post as I add or subtract other items. Also if I find a less expensive alternative to GNC, I will let you know about that also.

I am currently looking at 5-htp, there are some major drawbacks to it, so if anyone has taken it, I would be glad to hear about them.

Hi PaPaJim,

First of all, we have a group here 'Natural healing', that may be of benefit to you:

I read your list of supplements, you have made some good choices, but make sure you are taking a good pharmaceutical grade multi vitamin and mineral, and please make sure you are taking 1200 mg of calcium citrate for your bones. That is the dose recommended by my Rheumatologist today.

I purchase my vitamins through my Chiropractor, they are the smartest of Doctors when it comes to vitamins.

I also talked to my Rheumatologist about Deplin, a nutraceutical good for arthritis and depression, he looked it up, said it was basically just folic acid, there is a huge difference in price between the 2, over $100. You can take up to 800mcg of folic acid.

I am currently taking Integrative Theraputics clinical nutrients for women 45 plus, but couldn't find it on the net tonight, but will tell you that Douglas Labs is great, you can never go wrong with them. They are of the highest quality, which allows your body to absorb them properly, and do not cause indigestion. The Chiropractor said that when a vitamin is causing the feeling of indigestion, your body is not breaking them down.

Lastly, a good Omega 3 can make a big difference in how you feel.

As you know, I'm not a Doctor, you should always check with your Doctor if you are on any meds, to make sure that it will not interfere with them.

Hope this is a help to you!

Wishing you well,

SK
