Feeling very sick after stopping my effexor

So I was on effexor and it was helping my fibro but I was having so many side effects from it I just couldn’t stand it anymore and I was happy to go to the doc and hopefully get my meds changed, not what happened :frowning: My doc told me to taper down on my effexor and then told me that we were at a pharmaceutical end and wants me to go for cognitive behavorial therapy, but that’s another matter.

So I was taking 150mg and she wanted me to cut down to 75mg for 2 weeks and then to stop so my last dose was last tuesday and everything seamed fine, no brain zaps, until 2 days after when I suddenly started feeling very sick. At first I thought maybe I was just in a really bad flair, I was stressed, had just got a tattoo and then fell down fairly hard, but after doing some research I found that everything I was feeling could be do to stopping the effexor. I am very nauseous, my stomach is acting up (if you get my drift), I get stomach cramps,I am dizzy, have blurry vision, and ach all over etc. it feels like I have the flu and it sucks. I did call the docs on Friday and she told me it’s something that happens fairly often and gave me a script for some motion sickness meds, which unfortunately have there own side effects but they are helping somewhat. I’m wondering if anyone else has been through this and how long does it last. It’s been 5 days of suckiness and I just want it to end any advice is helpful. Thanks so much

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca.. I am very sorry you are going through this. It may possibly be the withdrawal from the drug. If you dont get better soon should surely call your doc again. Please keep in mind when ever going on a drug or off do it slower than the average person to avoid withdrawals. For my good i think it was too quick. I know i would have gone much slower. I hope and pray you feel better soon. HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGS

That you even lived for 5 days with these symptoms is amazing. A lot of meds need to be tapered, your doc has taken you off to quickly. To cut a dose in half is extreme and then stop it completely after two weeks seems irresponsible. You are suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doc again about the symptoms you are having. If it were me, I would go back on it and then slowly reduce the dosage.

I can't remember what they were (tablets, capsules, etc.), I was on Effexor briefly but it made me sweat like crazy and I stopped, not long enough on it to have withdrawals. How strong is each pill?

No withdrawal symptoms though.

Best of luck, hope you feel better soon. Farida

I was only taking 2 capsules a day 75mg for a total of 150mg a day. This is the same way I came off of other meds and have never had a problem. Unfortunately from talking to the docs and doing some research this happens in about 20% of cases. I just can’t find how long it can last. I hope it’s not too much longer

I too take effexor and get that way when I miss even one dose. As a former nurse I agree it seemed to fast to wean off. Def call dr if symptoms do not abate in next day or two…
