Has anyone had trouble with hair thinning and loss?

My hair is thinning, especially at the top front area and it is FREAKING me out ! I have straight fine hair and if I lose any more of it, it is going to be very noticeable. I am wondering if this is caused by fibro ? I checked my meds and none of them have that side effect. Any ideas on how to help with this issue ? It’s bad enough that I’ve gained weight, but being bald…really ?

Thanks for ANY ideas !!!
Sheila

Same place exactly, some believe it's undetectable low thyroid, others believe it's Lyrica or other meds. My hairdresser said my hair has changed dramatically and it's no doubt the meds!

I don't have any answers, but I'll be sure to shout it from the roof tops if I do!

Hi Shelia, I had the same thing happen and it took sometime but my doctors agreed it was my thyroid. By any chance do you have hypothyroid as Sk said below low thyroid. I started taking biotin and my hair is thicker than ever now and I only took it for about a month or so. I sure hope you figure out what it is soon, keep us posted please. Hugs, Robin

Oh yes! My hair used to be very thick…began to fall out everywhere early on. I still find my hair everywhere…I think it is part of the fibromyalgia deal. I read that it begins to grow back as you get more time with it. Mine has not started to grow back yet, and my hair line is receding. Very cute huh?

I copied this from the fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue web site:

Hair Loss in Fibromyalgia

Hair loss is on the symptoms list for fibromyalgia. The good news is that it’s temporary: our hair falls out, and then it grows back in. The bad news is that we have no proven treatments for preventing the fall-out.

Many people with fibromyalgia report that they lose hair during times of high stress or during flares. It’s common to hear about someone washing their hair only to end up with their hands covered in it, you may notice an abnormal amount of hair in the bath tub or on a pillow.

My hair began falling out at the time of diagnosis. Still is but not as much. I don’t take any meds and I still have the hair loss. My thyroid was fine but i might need to get it checked since that has been mentioned. Low thyroid can also contribute to depression and fatigue. I guess it is important to keep n eye on it year to year…

Omg I have been loosing hair for Bout 6 yrs it took many dr visits to find my thyroid was 2 points off normal but it was enough to make my body do weird things. I cut. My hair shorter when it happened and try to use a soft brush and lots of conditioner mom is a hairdresser and there is not much you can do but these things made me feel better. I was loosing hand fills of hair I still do but not as bad due to the thyroid med. good luck wish you well

Thank you for all the replies ! I am going to try taking biotin as my daughter is a hair dresser and she recommended that I take it. I don’t have low thyroid and it has been checked many times. I am wondering if anyone has tried the shampoo treatments for women with thinning hair ? Recently tried growing my hair out to see if it would help, but it looks even worse ! So back to a short cut, even though it isn’t as flattering for my face. I used to wear it long, but now it is not only thinning but difficult to style, very stringy. I guess of all the symptoms we have this is the least intrusive, but is very hard on the ego !

Mine is better since I let it grow. My worst problem is the bang area, which my hairdresser just keeps going back closer to the crown on! That's why I posted those Daisy Fuentes clip on bangs the other day! I can see those in my future, though I may prefer real hair to synthetic!

My worst area is the bang area as well. Thanks so much for the clip on idea !

Ive been losing hair. It’s so depressing for me. I have a little bald spot in the front. And one side is really short from an old bald spot. Its hard to cover it up. I was wondering what was causing it but now after thinking back on it, its probably the fibro and it always happens when I’m having bad flares

I have been going gray since I was 26 so my hair is like 99.9% white now. Not gray, but white. I color it brunette as that is what I used to be. The white doesn’t have to do with fibro. Probably genetic as I had a grandfather who was white headed by age 20 ! It has gotten very difficult to color so, I started having my daughter add highlights as well which helps blend it when it starts to grow out. I think my best bet is to try biotin first and see if that helps, if not, I may go see a endocrinologist. Thanks everyone for all the help ! at least I know I am not alone !

Biotin does help your your grow. I was taking it. But my bald spot still didn’t really grow but the rest did.
It caused bad headaches tho. Like fibro already didn’t do that lol. I stopped using it. I even tried a low dose. I just couldn’t take it

If you haven’t already, be sure to get checked (bloodwork) for lupus, because hair loss is a big red flag for lupus, and a lot of people with fibro also end up with lupus - and it can take years for it to show up in the blood work (it did with me.)

Mine was falling out really fast for several years, and I always had long hair - to my waist at one point. Recently I got it cut much shorter, up above my shoulders, to help speed up the process of growing out the gray (I’d been coloring it.) I’ve noticed since I got it cut short it’s not falling out nearly as fast. I miss the long hair, but short hair beats no hair! I think taking the strain of the weight of the length off helps the circulation in the scalp or something. It also makes washing and drying my hair SO much easier on my shoulders - I have torn rotator cuffs on both sides, and washing all that long hair was a pain - literally!

Short hair helps with three fibro issues.

  1. Makes hair loss less visible
  2. Makes excessive sweating less visible
  3. Is easier to style when you have shoulder, neck or back pain.

I have been tested for lupus, thyroid and all kinds of issues that could cause hair loss multiple times. All tests come back negative. I think I will try biotin and possibly hair thinning shampoo treatments for women. I will try them one at a time and let ya’all know which works best, if they work !!! Thanks for all the replies. I really didn’t expect to hear much back in this topic !

“Styling hair…?” What is this strange concept? I think I have some dim memory of once having done such a thing, long ago, in my pre-fibro years…

And Oh YES does it help with sweating and heat - I never realized how much all that hair was contributing to my constant overheating and facial sweating until I got it lopped off. I still sweat (I do live in Coastal VA, after all) but it really does help. Not having it making me hot and wrapping around my neck at night has helped my sleep, too.

Good luck with the biotin, etc. - I tried a supplement combo that was for hair and nails both one time (I think I got it at RiteAid) that helped some. At the time my fingernails were literally about to fall off from an allergic reaction & flare, but as I remember the supplement helped both my hair and nails some. It had biotin and several other things. (Glad to hear you’re - for lupus!)

My idea of styling is blow drying it on low heat just enough to give it some shape and before I start sweating, then turning it on to the cool temp and cooling myself down ! LOL.

Hey I might try that now with the shorter “do.” These days the best I usually manage is to let it dry about half way and fluff a little of the nearest styling product into it and shake my head upside down a few times!! (At which point I usually get dizzy, stagger around the room, and decide I’m too tired to go out anyway! lol)

I created a Pinterest board for short styles and am adding pics to it, to figure out which one to go with. It’s cheaper than hairstyle magazines !

I’m not sure if it’s fibomrelated but I also have thin fine hair nd have had slope ia ( hair loss). I’ve nit got any miracle cure for this. I am now having B12 shots and it seems to have slowed the process down quite a but.hard to say it was that but that’s the only thing that changed at sout he time the hair loss slowed. In my hair it is notjcsble that inhavevlost a lotof Haiti. I use hair bulking products which ehile they o nothing for the hair loss make the hair look a it thicker.
