ITCHING anyone?

So sorry to hear that you guys! I had a bout of bad itching at bedtime for a few nights. I quit all my night time meds. Probably isn’t what my doctor would like, I guess I’ll find out when I go next month. It came on suddenly and was unbearable. I looked online and saw it could be side effects of my meds (which I’ve been on for years, no idea why I’d suddenly have a reaction to them) but I stopped the meds and no more itching.

Now I can’t sleep worth a darn though. And some of them were for pain so the pain is worse but I thought this itching is going to drive me insane, so I just felt backed into a corner. Guess I’ll see what the doctor has to say about it all. Ugh.

I’m not a medical professional but I’ve been on daily meds for 30+ years and I’ve worked in a pharmacy for 17+ years. With that in mind, over the years I’ve learned that all sorts of things can impact how your meds work. Below is just a short list of things that can mess you up:

Adding one (vitamins, supplements as well)

Removing one (vitamins, supplements as well)

Changing dose up or down

Physical changes in you such as developing a tolerance

Taking short term acute meds (can interfere with daily meds!)

Change in sleep pattern/schedule

Change in diet

Change in when you take the meds

New medical conditions can impact your current meds

So, although it’s frustrating, keep in mind that your body is changing every day and this may change how your daily meds work.

Itching was the first symptom of Fibro, that I could pinpoint. It was so intense that I started using the edge of a credit card or a hair brush to scratch, and drew blood more than once. No OTC creams or lotions or ointments had any effect on the itch. It went away as suddenly as it arrived. The one thing I learned was - the more/harder you scratch, the worse it got. A truly awful 2 weeks.

Yes :frowning: My ears mostly and I could itch them until they bleed.
I do have random itch attacks as well though. Especially if it’s an area that was an injury. I recently had a carcinoma removed from my shoulder and the area has healed but every once in a while it gets so itchy I can’t believe it! And the worst part is that it seems to be INSIDE of my skin. How do I itch that?

Hi to all itchy people I am one as well. I take a low dose of Zyrtec for the itching and hydrocortisone cream for the spots that need attention immediately. And its all over, arms, legs, trunk, scalp, my face drives me nuts and it all feels like its just under the skin and I just cant get to it. Fibro is an insane disorder!!
Better days to all!

Sheila2, I’m glad that you posted your information. I sound more like you in that I feel the itching all over as you described, but mainly on my face, scalp, and trunks. The itching on my arms and legs comes and goes. It sometimes feels like sparkler flares are dropping on my skin and I feel a quick jolt then itching (that I can’t even get too as it feels like it is under the skin). On my face it seems concentrated to my eyebrows, nose, and jaw line. Unfortunately, I’ve been feeling this intense burning and itching for the past 10 weeks pretty consistently everyday, just woke up one day and BAM it started. I take Zyrtec 2x a day to help but, it barely takes the edge off. When I wake up in the morning, I feel “normal” then as soon as I start moving it starts up and gets more intense as the day goes on. I hope your itching goes away one day too! Thanks again for sharing

I’m new here and newly diagnosed (Jan 2019) so I am on a giant learning curve. I have a big problem with itching, too, mainly on the palms of my hands. One night I went to town on my palm with a wire hair brush until it bled. Recently, I’ve been taking Benedryl when it gets bad and that helps. An ice bag on the itchy area also helps. I’m very glad I found this group!

I recently had an allergic reaction to hair color. My scalp cleared in less than a week, but I have endured an extremely itchy rash for a month. After 3 prescriptions and no help…is this just a fibro complication to endure?

YES!!! It is helpful to know that it isn’t just me. It is really a problem for me.I wake up at nigh scratching and itching. I am sorry for you because I know how annoying this is.

Update: I’m still getting random itching and sometimes a hive or two. The itching can be really intense. I now keep a tube of cortizone 10 near my bed, near the couch, and in my purse. This usually works quickly! The itching is usually right before or right after a particularly bad fibro day. Still mainly on my palms, wrists, & fingers, but occasionally can be in the crook of my arm or behind my knee. I’m also still using ice bags, which really helps calm it down when the Cortizone 10 won’t. Fibro stinks!

Well, guess I can add this to my list of symptoms too.

I have been dealing with this but figured it was an allergy to something, yet could not figure out what it could be.

Has anybody else dealt with a crawly sensation? Feels sort of like a bug crawling on you or a hair tickling but there is nothing there. Course the area starts itching then so maybe that’s connected?

Yes, I have itching in different places and it comes and goes. It can drive you crazy.

Yes, convinced it’s connected to fibro. Nerve endings firing off and such.

What you describe sounds like Restless Leg Syndrome. I had that diagnosed years ago through a sleep test. It is awful and comes on when I am resting or trying to fall asleep. It does come and go and there is no “cure” for it. The best thing to do is get up and walk around a bit since it makes sleeping very difficult. Sometimes, the movement will slow it down a bit. Good luck with all!

Yes the itching really bad off and on. I’ve been had the itching for quite awhile now I’ve developed within the last few weeks a rash under my breasts and in my groin. The doctor diagnosed it as intertrigo in those areas. Then I have another rash above my breasts near my neck and top of foot and she called it something else. She said it’s not the same rash as the one under my breasts. For that rash she has me using a prescription cream. It’s just crazy making all the different symptoms. I hope all of you find some relief. Thank you for sharing.

The itching is impossible to deal with; first you want to do it in private so no one thinks you have bugs or something. What’s worst is when your back itches 24/7 and your skin is numb, in pain all the time and can’t scratch hard enough to get to the “root” of the itch.

I too have the itching problem . no rash but a feeling like somethings crawling on my skin or like I have extremely dry skin. what do people do to relieve this?

I’ve had this too. I now use lotions and creams daily, so I know if there is any itching, it’s not dry skin. I also have eosinic esophagitis, so I have multiple food allergies. My allergist has me on a daily Zyrtec to combat any itchiness and hives.
I do have neuropathy in my face. It started out as just itching, then numbness. A neurologist told me after testing that it had to be another fibro symptom. Sigh Doctors are now saying that fibro patients may have problems with neurotransmitters and neurochemical imbalances. If that is the case, I’m not sure what we can do. Maybe someone on here might have a suggestion. I know when my neuropathy increases, I try to figure out why without success. I just have to be careful when I’m drinking or I’ll have it all over me. (If I could insert a silly face emoji, I would).

So very interesting… exact scalp areas for me too. I had no Idea this might be associated with the fibromyalgia.

I broke out in a rash all over my body. It started on my arms, then legs and of course my stomach! The only places I didn’t have a rash were my feet and my hands. I went to 3 different doctors who told me I have Scabies? I said, “excuse me??” After being given the medication that has one of it’s ingredients used for embalming!!! I went to a dermatologist. . I found out the rash is caused by weather changes and stress. I hope you get an answer because I know exactly how horrific a rash can be.
