Hellooooo.... So I am new to this (site and fibro haha). I was diagnosed this year after suffering for about 3 years. Obviously they come up with every possible thing in the world it could be before fibromyalgia. So now I am having med trials for various things to see what works.
At the moment I am on amitriptyline and I basically wanted to see if anyone else had tried this and if so what they thought to it?
I take it and have for about a year. I have had good results with it and have increased the dose once. I also take meds for RLS and have found after the doctors advice that if I take it at 6pm then the amitriptyline at 8pm by 10pm I am ready for bed.
I take amitripthline at night just like purplebutterlfy. My Dr. prescribed it to help me sleep and it really helps. I was on Lyrica twice a day until two weeks ago. My insurance will not cover it now. What a difference being off of it! But, I can not afford to pay for it out of pocket. I am also taking Cymbalta - insurance will not cover it anymore and I have 2 days of it left. I'm not looking forward to what is about to come - that just had the crap beat out of me feeling! I take a muscle relaxer at night and pain medication regularly. All that was really helping me! It is a struggle - hang in there! That is all we can do!
i took 5mg of amitriptyline and it knocked me out cold for 13 hours and then was stoned the whole next day. so its not for me. i hear of people having good results with it all the best to you and nice to meet you here. HUGGGGGGGGS
Yes, nice to meet you, and glad you have a diagnosis and some meds to help you at last. Mine is a similar story.. I have been on Amitriptylene for about 6 months now. Have worked my way up tp 50mg. It does help with sleep for me, tho I have to take it at 5pm. This is because it doesn't send me off to sleep straight away, but does keep me asleep in the morning. Doesn't do that much for the pain to be honest, but I have not met anyone who has completely eliminated the pain.
It's cool to get feedback from others experience regarding medications or herbal supplements, but my suggestion to you is experience is the best teacher. No drug or herbal supplement will have the same effect on you as it does someone else. You have to try a variety of things and I suggest you get recommendations for different things, but you will be the one who will know what works best for you. I have been coping for years and still no relief. I am one of the most chronic cases out here right now. So don't give up fight for what you know will make you feel better. If something does not work let the Doctor know immediately then try something else until you feel stable. Just sayin,' G
You may try looking up the manufacturer for Cymbalta and Lyrica. Many of the drug companies have coupons for their drugs, but they also have patient assistance programs to help people who have insurance but can’t afford their meds. Another thing to try is this: talk to your doc and have them send an appeal to yor prescription plan stating that you need these meds for x,y,z medical conditions and that no other drug provides the results that these drugs do. It’s an “Appeal based on medical necessity”. Often, the prescription insurance will approve those appeals and resume paying.

Welcome to the site (but not to fibro)! Amitriptyline really helps with sleep, but the most common side effect is drowsiness - go figure? Just be careful with your dosing time until you figure out how it’s going to make you feel. That means no driving or riding the tractor until you know you’re awake. Even if you notice some residual drowsiness in the morning, try to stick it out for a few weeks because that usually gets better.
Hi and welcome to the site! I haven't been on amitriptyline but I still wanted to say hi! I use a variety of things to try to control symptoms, including physical therapy, salon pas, ice packs, I work to keep my stress low, and I try to get good quality sleep as much as I can. Again, welcome to the site!! Hugs!!!!
Thank you everyone who has taken the time to reply and welcome me to the site. I am overwhelmed that so many people have taken the time to put detailed responses. It's can be very hard to talk about it with people who dont have fibro as they never really understand what your going through etc. So fair the amitriptyline has helped me sleep but hasnt helped with the pain or headaches. And I feel pretty out of it for most of the day which is never great at work. Luckily my boss is very understanding. Thank you for all the advice. I am going to stick it out until my next appointment in three weeks and see how I feel.
I hope you enjoy your visits to this site. I had it for 10 years before they diagnosed me. I kept thinking maybe a better doctor, a better hospital. But I went to a few of the best and no, no one knew. I learned later that it was really only two years after my car accident that the medical community finally came up guidelines and criteria for it (1991). Then the diagnosed me in 1995. My first medicine was amitriptyline and I am still on it. I have found that the early you take it in the evening ( couple of hours before bed time) it is out of your system before you wake up. I started on 25 mg but recently increased it to 30-50mgs. This is one medicine I will never go without because it reduces the amount of night awakenings for me
Welcome. I took amitriptyline for about 9 months, 5mg. I found it helped a bit with sleep but really didn't help me with pain. My doctor never tried me on a higher dose. I am considering going back on just to help me with sleeping. I wish you the best as you continue on the fibro journey. You have certainly come to a place of support and caring. I think you will do well here. Hugs and all the best.ST
