after my last admittance the hospital i was given new meds and had one changed. my question is about amitriptaline. the dose i am now is 50mg. i know lots of people on the site are on this med. i only got one months worth and i was wondering if 50mgs is a good dose.
they changed my bp med and i know that has to b increased cause my bp has been on the high side with this new med.
if you dont mind sharing i would like to know what dose of amitriptiline others r on.

Hey there! I was taking amitriptylene as far back as 1990 to help with sleep and migraines and started on 25 mg. I took it at night before bed. It helped in the beginning but after taking it for years, wasn’t working anymore. I believe I then went on Wellbutrin for about a year. That I took in the morning. I didn’t like the weight increase caused by amitriptylene, but my PCP always wanted to put me back on it. My records state that I refused this much needed med for depression! Heck, I thought I was taking it for migraines and sleep! Just this past August after seeing a rheumatologist, he too put me back on it, even though I told him this drug hasn’t worked for me for years! I called after a week and was told to take 50 mgs. Which didn’t help any either. If you’ve never been on any meds before, this small dose may help you immensely. It is an antidepressent that helps with anxiety, sleep, and can be taken in higher doses. Remember, everybody reacts differently to meds. I have yet to find a med that will get me some restorative sleep - tried many and am do tired. Give the 50 mg a try and keep in contact with your doctor if its not working for you. Hope it works for you!
I STARTED TAKING THAT AT THE BEGINNING OF 2012 MIGRAINES. IT ALSO HELPS ME SLEEP BETTER. I ONLY TAKE 25 MG BC AT 50 I WAS A ZOMBIE. YOU WILL FIND THE RIGHT DOSE FOR YOU, JUST KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR DR. ITS AN AMAZING JOB THAT HAS A LOT OF USES.
thank you everyone for sharing. the 50mg seems to b helping me sleep and doesnt seem to make me spacy. but then again we all react different to every med.
I was on that years ago for migraines , I remember it caused crazy dreams, then tried it again years later and 25 mg made me feel like I had a huge hangover in the morning, I couldn’t take it because the zombie, hangover feeling was horrible, but I’m sure if 50. Mg is working for you, that’s great !!!
Also you said you were on the butalbital, Tylenol , caffeine ??? (That’s fioricet, )the butalbital, aspirin, caffeine works the best for my migraines it’s called fiorinol, just a little different , but i hope it’s working for you, just be careful it can cause re-bound headaches, when I have a killer migraine and start taking my fiorinol I have to be carefully not to keep taking it because after about a week, re- bound headache starts, so I only take it when I really have to.
I’m so glad you are getting some sleep
Hugs. & blessings
thanks for letting me know. i do have fioricet i knew about the one u r on. i didnt know if it really made a difference having it with the tylenol or asprin. i will ask for the one u r one when get a refil. i only have 30 and no refils. thank you for letting me know it can cause the rebound migraines.
as far as side effects i dont seem to have any. i know i am really tired latey but it could be from anything. it possiable its the meds making me tired. all i know is that i am not stuck being awake all night with horriable pain. i have a personal question about your migraines how do u know for sure its a rebound migraine and if so what do u do? how long do u wait w/o taking pain killers? i read on artice that said 5 days with no pain meds. i am tring but its really hard and this migraine is really really bad. all i want to do is sleep so i dont have to deal with the pain. i look forward to hearing what works for u.
Oh gosh, you've got it bad again. I wonder if you have some other illness that's causing it? In other words, is the migraine secondary to another illness? Let me see if I can find illnesses that have migraines as symptoms.
Okay, here's a really good link telling of possible causes of migraines. I think it would be a good idea for you to explore these options and see if they might fit. This will most likely involve the help of a doctor:
thanks i am actually in tears i hurt so bad right now. i really dont know how much longer i will last knowing i have pain meds that will end this pain. we will see
If you think you are feeling like ending things, you need to PLEASE call for professional help on this immediately, Eeyore! I hate to say it but if you call them and tell them you feel this way, you will end up hospitalized again and MIGHT get some help for the core issue.
Here is a number for the Good Samaritans. They will know how to help you if you are feeling like ending things, Eeyore:
PLEASE call them if you are that desperate!!! Don't be a casualty to your illness! I know it's horrible at the moment but that's not to say that it won't be gone...or cured very soon.
If you are in that much pain, GO BACK to the good hospital!!! They helped you once. Let them work on you again. Ask them about whether you have another illness that is causing the migraines. Don't give up!!!
Amitryptiline I don’t know if I’ve spelt this right, but anyway, it’s used to help sleep in small doses such as 25mg at night and is a drug of choice for fibromyalgia again in small doses and is supposed to help with pain. It did not help me. I took it for three months and gave up. It is used in much larger doses 150 mg for depression and does not work to lift mood unless given in the larger dose. Hope that helps. Take Care Barb,
Hey there! I take 20mg daily. Helps with sleep and pain. I take bp meds also - what are u taking for bp?
Please go back to the hospital if you’re suffering. Let me know if you want to chat, I am sorry for not returning your call. Please return to the ER if things are starting to hurt again!!!
i am so sorry for u thinking i wanted to over dose. that was not my intention at all. when i said the thing about the meds i was just refering to finally have meds to take the migriane away. i have no intention on taking more than i need. after being released i was given meds that r helping with the migraine before i went in nothing was helping. so staying away from all pain killers for a migraine was easy but the pain was very bad and knowing that now i have something to stop the pain it kinda hard not to take it.
the migraine got worse as the night went on and woke me every few hours and woke this morning by horriable pain so i gave in and took the meds i am feeling better now.
i cant take imitrex cause its in the family of triptans. i was on topamax for several years and it stoped helping me. untill a week ago i wasnt taking anything to prevent migraines. the hospital put me on a new bp med and amitriptline to help prevent them. i havent noticed any change yet but i am pretty sure it will take a few weeks to take effect. i just need to wait and see i guess.
i didnt think u sounded superior at all, i just know that it seems like fibro suffers seem to keep having the meds they r increased. sorry if u took my response the wrong way.
i am happy for all info espically greatfull for info from those who have been on the meds for awhile.
nice to hear from u. i am on propranol 20mgs for my bp. i have only been on it for a week. the hospital changed it. i was on atenol.
i think i may go back to the er to see if they can end this migraine. the pain was so bad this morning i couldnt wait for the pain meds to take effect. they r helping thank God
