Hello all, my rheumy increased my lyrica to 150mg 2x a day and I must say I'm feeling better :) Of course that's in connection with my other meds: Plaquenil and anti-inflammatory. What is bothering me lately is how tender my mouth has become. Most of the time my tongue feels like its on fire or scrubbed raw. Now, though, the roof of my mouth, especially by the gum line, feels like its been scrapped hard and left bruised every time I eat something crunchy. I love Fruit Loops (I know, I'm such a baby), well those hurt the roof of my mouth, as well as crunchy cookies, granola bars, etc.
Also, my gums sometimes feel very tender when I'm brushing (which I do not do hard). The tenderness seems to move from one side to the other at will.
I'm wondering if this is auto immune related or fibro related or something else all together. Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks so much!
I have the same problem with MY mouth & I don't take Lyrica or any of the other meds you mentioned. I only take Elavil for sleep and OTC (Advil) for FM pain.
I surely hope someone else posts for a potential reason for our sore mouths.
this is a great topic!! I have suffered SEVERE mouth pain for years and sometimes have to lie down it gets so bad. like you said, it seems to be along the gum line. it makes my whole face hurt. anyway, please know that you are NOT alone....hugs, annie
Have you tried any toothpastes for sensitive teeth? It won't help the roof of your mouth or your tongue but it may help the gums feel less sensitive. I get tooth and gum sensitivities and it usually helps. Sensodyne seems to work the best, as well as Tom's. And I do think it's fibro related. Possibly nerve pain?? And yes, others suffer with this; in fact, just a few days ago the same topic came up on a different thread. You are not alone!!!
Hi, Geranium. It's great to see you here again! How're you feeling? And how are things going for you?
I wonder if mouth wash could be aggravating things for you? Probably not, but just a thought. I too wish something could be done for you guys. Mouth pain is so...painful!
I had similar issues like this for a long time and the only thing we could come up with was a chronic oral thrush infection. I started taking some really good acidophilus on a daily basis and it has been my lifesaver !! Good luck and I hope this helps!
Could this be neuralgia? Sounds like what my mum suffered as a kid and she refers to it as neuralgia. Oddly enough, her father used an old folk remedy on her and she said it's the only thing that helped - he would blow a mouthful of cigarette smoke into her mouth and tell her to hold it. Yes, I know, it's a gross idea but who knows?
Hey Petunia...good to get on board again..albeit not too often. Reason:: I have this mega prob with my wrists now...VERY hard to type much so I just read what's on the board..et al. I TRY to be of 'some' help' but I cannot give what I do not know...uh huh. The 'mouth' problem tweeked (NO..it was NOT a TWERK)--LOL...me to respond b/c mine was driving me half nutso. & thought I was the ONLY one. I've since spoke with a couple other FM gals (off this site) and they told me their dentist told them they have Pyorrhea or (advanced dental problems) Stated as YET another side effect of FM..no matter how good you (and your dentist) look after your teeth. Bummer..eh? Second hand info..but the dentist a/m states "if you have an auto immune disease/condition'... (like us=FM, MS, Lyme disease et al)...our bones (like teeth) will be the first indication because of lack of proper minerals, vitamins etc..(THAT OUR DIS----EASE EATS UP)
NOW I'M JUST MAD..B/C I TAKE EVERY VITAMIN, MINERAL KNOWN TO 'GODS THAT BE' AND MY MOUTH STILL HURTS.....GRRRR!
As to having Thrush...had that from COPD inhalers..take the med...problem goes away.
hmmm....I typed a long msg and now I cannot find it here anywhere... what's up with that? Did I goof up (as per usual...? or can you find my msg somewhere Petunia?
Do not whiten your teeth. Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Mine is prescription from the dentist. My cousin is a dental hygienist, and she says some medicines can make your teeth hurt. Also avoid acidic foods. She also says never whiten your teeth. It eats away your enamel.
Wow Rosie , I am so glad i read this post. I have had this on and off for over 2 years. It does not matter what I eat my mouth feels like it is burning hot peppers. Even drinking water. I once went to the hospital and go you have hairy mouth , then to my doc who could not see anything and gave me Nystatin. I have a huge bottle in my fridge. Last week when I saw my doc he gave an pill to take for fungal infection. This is another very serious symptom I have had for over 2 years and no one can seem to help, I do take inhalers but always wash my mouth out. I should have the cleanest mouth in tow.. LOL
So what is exactly going on....I still have no idea and feel it is part of what is going on. Way more uncomfortable than people think. My tongue also feels numb and swollen.. Just another thing the docs do not listen to me about. Thanks for letting me know I am not the only one.. ps Its not very sexy either is it when you feel like that!!! Hugs Lisa
