Sore tongue

I have looked everywhere I can think off to look. I was wondering if anyone else has trouble with their tongue. Mine stays sore and I think at times it is a little swollen. I have tried drinking more water, lemonade, you name it I have tried it. Things don taste like they should and if I eat chips or anything salty it makes it worse. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Is the sodium, the same things happen to me and the doctor said it’s the sodium. And if you have blood pressure there is your answer. Blood pressure and sodium don’t mix.
Don’t drink anything hot until your tongue gets better. And take some honey.
Feel better.

I've had this. I just drank a ton of water. Lots of freeze pops too. the doctor said I was dehydrated and too much sodium in my system. Hurt like crazy!

Yes, I have it off and on. I finally went to the doctor and my diagnosis was/is Thrush. My tongue gets very sore and nothing helps. I now have pills and also wafers that I let dissolve in my mouth, prescribed by the doctor, those take the edge off until the medication kicks in. I have had it often enough that I have standing prescription at the pharmacy, nice that the doctor trusts me enough to know when to take the pills. The discomfort is awful when it is active.

Hi Jackie,

I just went through another bout of this last week. My tongue felt like someone vacuumed up the taste buds from their pores! The tip of my tongue hurt, plus the sides. I also think I'd bit it at night. Plus my gums hurt too. I didn't do anything, didn't know what to do to feel better, except for an Ibuprofin. It went away again, for now. It's like any other flare of fibro, apparently, at least for me. I DON'T KNOW WHY THE GUMS AND TONGUE ARE INVOLVED!

Oh, and I had the taste problem too! I couldn't stand to eat anything with a sauce on it, as it tasted terrible and almost made me hurl! I forgot about that until you mentioned it! I thought it was just a flu or something but maybe not, maybe the "stuff tastes funny" also is a part of fibro??? Your guess is as good as mine but I do thank you ever so much for bringing this up so I know I wasn't alone in it. Unless it was a flu and you had it too. You've got me.

Wow, I hope I can remember your advice so the next time it happens, I'm forewarned.

OK so maybe not the flu then. But what's odd is that we all got it at once, I think. I'm flummoxed by this.

I never thought of that, Lovett! You could be right.

Now that is weird because I went to the doctor when I got it the first time and I asked if I had thrush and she said no. But it sounded like it from the symptoms! I'm wondering if mine did develop into thrush after I saw her. Hmmmmm...

Susannh, can you please tell us what pills and wafers you were prescribed for the thrush? If this happens yet again, I want to ask my regular GP about thrush.

How does one get too much sodium in the system, I wonder? And how does one get dehydrated in the winter? You're right, it did hurt like crazy. Well, water and freeze pops are easy enough to handle if round 3 occurs. So thanks for the suggestions!

My tongue does this too. I also get lots of painful canker sores. My Dr never knows what caused anything. It’s always good allergy or stress related. Nothing like mouth pain. Ugh

Hi Jackie,

I posted a discussion earlier about the benefits of B vitamins. There are several mentions of a sore tongue with deficiencies of several of the B's, but talk to your Doctor first, he can make a determination with a simple blood test. He can tell you exactly what you are deficient in, and will know how much to recommend to restore that particular one!

Hope you get some answers,

SK
