I had a sleep study done and while confused by it all I also find it interesting. If anyone had had one of these done please feel free to share your experience as well as end results.
I made my appointment for the initial appointment and met with the Dr... he then found that a sleep study was needed. so I made the appointment and was told they would call me with instructions before my appointment date... I called a few days before my appointment to find out wher I was supposed to go and what time because NOBODY had called me yet... well they tell me where to go and what time but told me they would call with the rest of the instructions...well they never did... I wound up going to the wrong Hospital... we have 2 hospitals with the same name...lol... so I was a few min. late but seems there were others who were later than I was. I did not take any meds that day and when I got there I was exhausted...BUT I was not allowed to go to bed until 10...NOW since nobody called me to tell me anything I had my hair up and it had curl cream in it...LOL... they had to first draw on my head and face...then stuck paste and electrodes all over my head and face... and then had me sit in a recliner and NOT go to sleep while I waited for her to come back and put me in bed...well finally she comes back and YEAHHHH bed time!!!! She finished hooking me up and left the room so I could go to sleep...Oh wait she had to do the check... where she tells me to open my eyes , close my eyes, hold my breath...ect... then Good night.... NOTTTTTTT!!!!!!! I have never in my life had a problem going to sleep...I have a problem staying awake....I sleep all the time... BUT nope not this night!!!! I could not go to sleep for nothing...I tossed and turned... and clinched my teeth back and forth , flipped and flopped and MY HAIR was driving me nuts she had me take it down) I never sleep with my hair down... It drives me nutts!!!! I would feel like I dozed off and then suddenly wake up because I have to pee... I did this 3 times... at home I never wake up...not even to pee... I just pee the bed...LOL...anyways... so I woke up 3 times and each time was heck to get back to sleep again. Toss and turn and flip and flop. Most miserable night I have ever had!!!
So I go today to get the results and I am beside myself...Here goes...There were 3 awakenings during the study that extended 30 min. in duration...(I remember these)...There were several awakenings that were short in duration. There were 146arousals for an arousal index of 44.8. The majority of arousals were due to respiratory events.
Respiratory
There was mild to moderate snoring present. There was 1 obstructive apnea, 0 mixed apnea, 2 central apneas, 136 hypopneas and 12 RERAS. The AHI was 42.66(>5.0 is abnormal) and the RDI was 46.3. The REM RDI was 28.1, the supine RDI was 31.4. The average length of obstructive events during REM sleep was 19 seconds and the average length of the obstructive events during NREM sleep was 19 seconds.
So My Dr tells me that my BRAIN is Pissed!!!!! LOL His words!!! He says my brain is constantly shocking my body to make me breath...Out of 390 min I slept 195 min. Now the wait to go back for a cpap test... Dr. says NO WONDER YOU FEEL LIKE CRAP!!!! He is a funny guy...lol
I have a CPAP, and my experience is somewhat similar. However, I didn't have to wait so long to go to sleep. Put the electtrodes on, check em, and off to bed I went. The nurse also said I was the biggest toss and turner she has seen. The AHI being about 40 ish is really high and you should feel the benefits of cpap therapy within the first week. You'll be more alert and focused, more patient, and more energetic.
My husband also just went thru this, and his AHI wasn't an issue, but the length of time he was not breathing was too long. He said it was uncomfortable, but he did sleep. I think my daughter also has sleep issues, so I'll try to get her sleep study done this summer.
Now, for some use advice. It will be hard to keep the mask on all night at first, but just keep putting it on when you sleep. Eventually your body will get used to it. It may take weeks, or months depends on how much your fibro keeps you awake. All machines come with humidifier pretty much standard, but you may want a heated hose to keep your mouth from becoming dry. If you have any questions or problems don't hesitate to call the equipment company to get it comfortable for you. Good luck and here's to more restorative sleep SOON!!!!
I have had 3 sleep studies. 1 was a home one, they don't like those (sometimes the finger indicator falls off, no electrodes...) I have no idea what any of those initials are/mean, except REM and NREM, but I was told I have very mild sleep apnea. I don't really stop breathing, but my oxygen depletes several times per night ( at least thats the way I remember it, it was years ago). I knew I would never hook myself up to a machine- especially a noisy machine. I already have insomnia (diagnosed insomnia). So I went with the option I had never heard of, a "dental device". It is basically an upper and lower mouth gaurd specially molded from my mouth. both pieces are connected and the idea is that it will keep your jaw in a certain position so that you breath easier. I rarely wear it because I tend to find it under me when I wake up in the morning. lol

Sounds interesting, I didn't know about the mouth guards. I think I have sleep apnea as well, I just didn't want to have to wear a mask. I'm sorry, I'm Cindy.

My Dr. said I would not have a mask. He said mine would be like the nose thing they would put on you in a Hospital for oxygen. That I believe I can deal with. He told me to take the results home and look it all up on the web...lol... so I am trying my best to understand what all the numbers mean...
Thanks for the replies and sharing... I never thought I would get the results I got... Dr. did say that I should feel much better soon after wearing this to bed... I hope so... I am tired of being tired all day long...
After further research I believe I will have the nose plug type of CPAP... lol my bad... Not exactly what I was seeing in my head as he told me about it...lol
It takes a bit of getting used to, and I never fully took to it, but it is an alternative option. Swallowing with it in I think is the hardest thing to get used to. And nice to meet you Cindy I'm Kim, cindy said:

Let us know how it works. I am very interested to see if you sleep better. Good Luck :-)

It will be sometime next month when I go in to sleep with the machine. I am very concerned about the Central apneas... those do not sound so good. I already had myself an appointment to see a Neurologist because of a fear that I have something else and I was planning on asking for an MRI of my brain... well this gives me more reason to demand it be done!!!!
