Been thinking of getting a tattoo wondering if it is safe or not with fibro yes or no any thoughts would help.

I have an extensive tattoo covering the lower portion of my back and extending over a portion of my back up to my shoulder, a side tattoo extending from my left hip to rib cage. I also have a small tattoo on mu neck, large tattoo on my left thigh and the backs of my ankles up to below my calf muscles. My most recent is on the inside of my wrist. I had the back and side pieces all done together as they are a cohesive design representative of my life, children and losses. I did not have a diagnosis for fibro at the time, however we quickly realized I had an unusual pain response. My original artist was a brilliant woman with a Ph.D in Women’s Studies. We decided that for me no session would ever last more than 1.5 to 2 hours. We also used yoga/chant/meditation music to help me through my extensive back/side piece sittings. My husband or a close friend was always with me during my sessions and helped me through. I
hink we have a total of 6 or 7 sittings in that complete piece. My smaller pieces haven’t been an issue. My thigh took just under 2 hours, my ankles are celtic crosses about 4x2 inches and made to look like stone
They took about an hour each. My wrist was the first after my diagnosis and is about 3x3 inches. My new artist suffers from a pain disorder and rheumatological conditions. I responded much better than I could have thought I would, seemed more sore afterwards but that could have just been location.
I am working with him on a half sleeve idea now. Like you I am worried about how my body will react but I plan to go in small sittings and be patient. I am not like my husband who can sit for 5 hours and doze as he has his work done. Find a good artist that is understanding and compassionate and most importantly happy to work with you through your experience, especially if it is your first one. Good Luck!!!
Hey! In July was when I got my first tattoo... I can describe my feelings I got, it was like 10 boiling hot needles poking into my skin over and over. Extremely painful but about 20 mins later you`ll be thinking of the next one. But remember, though we have fibro a tattoo will hurt anyone. Good luck, hope you do it and enjoy! Next time I go I am going to take a damp facecloth to bite on because it helps to relieve pain made worse by stress and took my mind off it for a moment.
I have four, 2 which I have had done after my diagnosis. I didn't notice any difference in the pain levels (BECAUSE THEY ALL HURT LIKE H***) or the healing. I had the same man do all four and I talked to him before my last one, because it was going to take several hours, and he thought it would be best to divide it into 3 session. That worked well, because the hardest part for me is sitting still that long, usually in an uncomfortable chair, in an uncomfortable position.
I would talk to the artist first and make sure they are willing to help accommodate you. Good luck and BREATHE!
