What Are Your Favorite Distractions from Pain?

i like to go to swimming pool and spa and i walk do streatches and play with my pets when i can go see them, i eat healthy and i read play on the pc and join groups to help me stay calm and deal with situation too much for me to handle alone.

Me too

I like to sink into a good book, something that can really capture my mind...... but when Ive reached my reading limit, Ill try something else like drawing or doodling, beading, or sometimes even just coloring in one of my son's coloring books can help distract me, even just a little.

Movies, TV dramas, thrillers, Homeland, Newsroom, American Horror Story, Walking Dead, Masterpiece Theatre.

Games, Plants vs Zombies, mini robots, Garden Defense.

My favorite past time is the grandkids, but the take huge reserves of energy!

You sound like me. Fun stuff.

I wish I had your cable channels, SK!

Playing with pets = :-)

What kind of pets do you have?

Happy I love how positive you are , I also love to just admire the beautiful changing leaves, NY is so beautiful right now, the sun is shinning and it feels so good. How wonderful that you check on the 4 older women, that reminders me to call a friend she is 88, stuck at home and loves when I call her or come over, I wish everyone would do that for our elderly !
God bless you !
Hugs

  • I like to pretend I am 5 yrs old and read children's books & watch animated folk lores/fairy tales on Youtube. I was a healthy child, so remembering how I used to be really helps me feel optimistic and happy.
  • Being creative - decorating house, doing simple crafts/jewelry, dressing up, etc.
  • Going to toy stores and imagine playing with all the toys in the store!
  • Playing with my cats
  • Funny Youtube videos - esp. cats and animals
  • Listening to/playing soothing music
  • Fantasize about eating desserts from all over the world (I also dream about it during sleep)!!

iPad, tv, sleep, dogs, family, boyfriend, food: sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.

Oh, administrating my 2 FB groups.

The iPad helps. Nothing actually gets rid of the pain.I do my jobs early in the day and during this time I accumulate quite a bit of pain. The IPad distracts, as does this group, as well as emails and twitter, as I rest to try to deal with the accumulated pain. The TV also helps when something good is on. I really appreciate all these distractions, I don’t think that I could manage without them. I also write and enjoy that as long as the pain is not overwhelming. I walk on my Patio at different times during the day and that reduces some of my stiffness. If I stayed still all day I would be in a lot more pain, but if I walk too much it is also painful so it’s a balance. None of this is easy.Kind thought to all. barb

I’ve found crochet. I started taking lessons, Saturdays from 10:00 - 11:30am, which falls within my “good” few hours. I was afraid it would take me a long time to catch on and get discouraged, but my teacher was great and I was making a great headband and scarf in no time.
With crochet I can be in bed, as I am a lot, and still be making Christmas presents and things for myself and I feel productive. It’s also something you can pick up n start working on and when you get tired you simply sit it down to pick back up later.
It’s a great hobby and now everyone is wanting their own scarf, cowl, purse. I have many projects to do.
My class is also making scarves scarves for Special Olympics athletes. It’s so satisfying to be doing this, for the athletes in my state.
Anyway, this helps keep my mind off of my pain, my illness and my limitations. It might do the same for you.

We had 73 degrees today downstate from you dee, and a year ago today was a snowstorm !

I would love to be able to go to a spa! They are expensive...I wish I had a jacuzzi at home, so I don't have to spend any money. I spend a few thousands on supplements, meds and medical treatments every month, so I don't have anything left. :( I hate how FM treatements are so expensive!!

I like those things, too! I love reading but it's been difficult to read small prints with dry eyes. It's impossible to read when I get a nerve pain around my eye and face. I love coloring -where can I get good coloring books?

I love plants, too! I make clippings and propagate. I have so many baby plants that I have to keep giving them away in order to avoid my house looking like a jungle!

music helps me often

I love these !

My organic garden, the work takes my mind off the pain but I know I will pay the price later - it's worth it.

Saunas are a great way to take your mind off, not only do they soothe but sweating seems to help. I know that after any surgery I try and avoid the strong meds, wrap myself up as warm as possible but keep my head as cool as possible, then sweat!

I also spend hours either internet surfing or I have some mind challenging games which help keep me sharp but also distract from the pain.

I'll also try my hands (when they don't hurt too much) at different crafts like clay modelling, painting etc. I think it helps delay the stiffness that always comes. I absolutely love cake decorating but can't always do it cos my hands are too shakey. I also love cooking, all types, baking, jam making, preserving, etc.

Organic garden? Nice!! I would love to have my own veggie garden!

Do you have sauna at home? It's a great way (if you can torelate it) to detox your system.

It's great that you like cooking - I wish I did...I like eating better. I don't like cooking to the point that I don't want to eat anything!
