What Types of Jobs Do You Do?

I’ve had different jobs but mostly in federal work force.in military pay but in June I got very ill. September I filed for medical retirement and ssd. I’ll be at, 100% disability thru VA this month.
But if I were you I’d look at jobs involving people interaction. Could help inspire ideas for your writing.

I am an office manager but I’m not sure how much longer. I’m getting ready to go back after having a total hip replacement. Before, if I was at my computer, I was literally dozing off because of the fatigue. If I was on my feet too much, the pain was horrible!
Now I’m in a flare and go back on the 19th. Hopefully they’ll even take me back.
I have to schedule rounds of injections (gel like substance in between my discs in my back) and that’s a day off once a week for 3-5 weeks every couple of months.
I’m afraid I may have to file for disability!

Oh, thank God you are getting benefits. Yes, I serve in four ministries at church, so I do have a lot of peoplei n my life. And new people attend church a lot and I am not shy in meeting them. Also, sometimes I ride the city bus and talk about meeting different people! Sometimes I kick around the idea of going to beauty school and learning to do nails and having a nail shop.

Thank you for sharing. Sometimes I think about disability, but I was warned that I would have to drop out of college. And yet my friend who is on disability was told if she is not in college they wlll drop her. Who knows!

you can be in school and apply. It depends on your work/medical history.

Thank you so much.

Hi Petunia,

I would love to go back to school for social work, I was taking classes up until about 3 years ago. I just kept physically getting worse, that darn fibro-fog kicks in and makes everything even worse. Like you an activity directors job is demanding physically, I don't see myself being able to continue unless my doctor is able to come up with some meds that actually work. By 4 pm each day I am physically unable to do anything more. I find myself worrying about my future.

what is ADA ?

ADA is American Disabilites Act. I am not very educated on them. From what I hear, they are to help you keep your job even though you are sick. Here in this state, they are not that strong. But maybe it is because NM is a "fire at will state". At least it used to be a "fire at will".

I manage a warehouse for an online retailer. I'm blessed that my boss is very understanding. I work at my own pace, and can rest when I need to.

Pharmacy technician

Colleen, you are indeed blessed to have an understanding boss. As far as I know from the comments made by many of our members, they have not had an understanding boss.

Thank you for sharing the link.

Thank you for your reply. And thank you for serving our country!

Graveyard this was such a great discussion, I just read all the responses & enjoyed every one, just seeing what everyone does was so cool. i have been a nurse for 24 years and loved every min of it, I loved going to work and making a difference everyday in someone’s life. I treated every patient as if they were my own family. Unfortunately this past May I became sick with diverticulitis and the fibro just made it impossible for me to return, along with other life stressors that made the fibro worse. I miss my job everyday, I’m really not sure where I go from here, my short term disability has ended, and I have applied for LTD with the company I payed into for 22 years, they are giving me a hard time… So I am not sure what is next… I would love to go into counseling, but would need some schooling for that, I could try an easier nursing job, but right now just getting through a day at home is hard, so I am trusting God for the right ans… And trying to taking care of me for the first time in my life, it was sure easier to care for others, but I’m trying, fibro sure has a way to make us slow down and start to listen to our body. I was hoping if I got the LTD, that perhaps I could supplement my income with private duty nursing… 2013 will be a new chapter for sure
Hugs & blessings

i am a nanny i know this type of job is no for everyone. i love kids and i love working for them.

the pros: for this family is short hours as far as a nanny is concerned, you can nap and eat what you want since you can cook or bake i am not limited to a micowave, i can decide how the day goes no one to say this has to be done at this time, no meetings to attend, i can wear what i want, and the best part fo me is the cuddles and smiles

the cons: i cant really just call in the morning and say i cant come in because i didnt sleep or i am in alot of pain(this is not to say i cant call off but they rely on me to go to their job) for some having a job where others are greatly effected by u not showing up is hard. the parents can understand if u r really sick with the stomach bug they do not want u to bring the illness to their house but there r many days where i feel horriable for one reason or another and i dont want to work or even get out of bed, to continue another con is not being around people this doesnt bother me,u having a job means the parent cant lose their job( i have had this happen)

there r pros and cons to every job abd i guess you have to weigh the good with the bad. some people have to be around others or they will go stir crazy me i like the quite house. i do have the tv on in the back round usually with music. the family i nanny for has three children ages 10,7, and three months. the older kinds are in school till 2:45pm and i leave at 4 so its just me and the baby all day unless one of the older kids is sick. i have already had the 10 year old home sick and i have only worked for this family for a month. my last family was a nighmare.

i hope that u can find a good job that fits you. i am happy to see so many responses. best wishes to u in finding a job.

I am glad you shared about writing. Do not give up on writing. That is cool that you are published!

Oh dee thank you for sharing! My prayers for your LTD that you paid for! I guess a person should just build up a savings while they can work and do thier own LTD. Just a thougt.

For years and years I wanted to go into nursing. Here in NM, it is the top job as a nurse can live in a nice rural area and work almost anywhere, as you know. My first full-time job was a nurse’s assistant at a nursing home in Truth or Consequences, 32 miles from my home town of Hillsboro. Back then it was a different world. We were able to work in pairs and I had some really nice team mates. Certification was on the horizon but not yet required.

A few years ago, I did take a nurse assistant class and became state certified. Back then the clinicals were at a nursing home. Well, I wanted to try hospital work. So I signed up with an agency. Oh, my mercy! The clinicals did not prepare me for hospital work, of course! I don’t know what I was thinking.

My skin crawls with fright when I think back to my very first shift at a HUGE hospital. I was the only assistant on the wing. And thank God I got there early as the tech gave me a crash course in taking CGBs! It was swim or drown. Thankfully I didn’t have a 12-hour shift. They issued me a cell phone for nurses and patients to call me! The phone rang non-stop! Ha, with the fibro fog, I would get lost and end up at the wrong station and wing. Other than turning in a few CGBs late the charge nurse thought I did well!

I tried a few shifts and shadowing at the huge county hospital known for state wide trauma and peds. Of course they kept sending me to Peds. That was rough trying to learn to take o2 sats on a tiny, premie toe that I could barely see! And I saw whooping cough for the first time in a tiny baby.

Now the college is once again doing three week or so clinicals at hospitals. The classes fill up fast. And they are now offering tech classes. Again the classes fill up.

I did do a few pre-reqs to the pre-req courses in nursing. When I got to basic bio man, I failed! And the instructor really liked me and tried so hard to help me.

I still often wonder about nursing or nursing assistant. If I did either, I would do home health, even hospice. That is up to the Lord.

Tomorrow, I have a job interview at Road Runner Food bank for data entry. His will be done.

Oh what a nice job! Here there is a special want add called, Care.com in which you can sign up for nanny, home health aide and house sitter. There are quite a few openings for nanny here in this economy. There are a few nanny jobs I have looked at. I would want my own car. I share a vehicle with my husband. I know what you mean about calling in. If I am blessed to work at home, I might offer to care for my little friend, Faithy, who has lupus. When she is in pain, of course she has to stay home. Her parents both work and that is hard. I don't have a TV, so Faithy would have to find other entertainment! I am not ready to make the commitment to her as a back up plan just yet.
