Worse pain when taking Tramadol?

Hi everyone.

I have been taking Tramadol for back pain since April. I did not start having all over joint pain and muscle aches until the end of May. Although I have discussed this with my physician they are not concerned, but I am. To be more specific, it happened again today, I had no other pain than severe back pain, so I took my prescribed dose of Tramadol, and bam an hour later I developed all over sharp and shooting joint pain.

Has anyone experienced worsening pain after taking tramadol?

I have not changed any of my other medications, though I tapered down my lyrica a couple weeks ago to 100mg twice a day. I am also on Cymbalta, Elavil, and Magnesium Glycinate.

Anyway, thank you for all your future comments. Hope all of your pains are low or absent…

Meow, I took a look at past discussions on Tramadol (using the search box). Our members definitely have given mixed reviews. Some are benefited by it, others have worse pain, others have problems from combining tramadol with other medications. It may be worth your while to have a read through those posts, though I hope members will respond here, too.

Hi Heather,

I had an allergic reaction to Tramadol and now I can't take it. It caused all over body pain and made me feel very sick and ill throughout the day. That is just my experience though. I have heard other individuals benefit greatly from Tramadol. I felt worse on the Tramadol than I did without it.

I hope you feel better soon! And I hope the issue you are experiencing resolves quickly...we don't need more pain on top of pain.

Hugs,

Sara

Hi Meow, I am sorry, I haven't taken Tramadol before. The tricky thing about Fibro is it definitely can be changing. I used to seldom have joint pain and now I have it daily. It is so hard to know but I encourage you to keep talking to your doctor about it. Please keep us updated on how you are doing. Hugs!!

Hi Meow,
I’ve definitely noticed that it’s gotten a mixed review on here. I took Tramadol for a couple years after I was first diagnosed with fibro. Contrary to what my doctor told me when he put me on it, it is an opiad/narcotic and it is habit forming, so if you decide to stop taking it you’ll have to ween off of it very carefully and I’d ask your pharmacist specifically how to safely do that. As far as my experience went, it started out giving me pain relief for the first maybe 6 months or so but after that it made all of my fibro symptoms (not just the pain) a lot worse. By this time I was already dependent on it so it took me a long time to finally decide to quit taking it and it was a long slow process to come off it as well. Prescription meds really scare me now after my experience with it and a couple other meds. Everyone reacts differently to meds. I recommend listening to your body, and do what you think is best for your health. You are the one who knows how you feel. Fibro treatment always seems to be trial and error based and varies from person to person. Hope some of this helps!
Hugs!
