A new idea for meds

You all may have heard of this but if not, it may be worth a look. My compounding pharmacy and a number of their FMS are shouting from the roof tops about gabapentin topical Good effect without all the side effects… She is also adding some other goodies to it for the effected areas

Thx! The link isn’t working for me, but google & I don’t like each other. :smirk_cat: - is it just a search engine search for gabapentin topical?
I hadn’t heard of it for FM and there isn’t any direct research for its use in FM: Pubmed just has quite a few topical for pain, nothing directly for FM, often just generally mentioning topical pain creams, which apparently are getting increasingly used, often as you say in a mix with other pain meds. This one is the most relevant study (2019), but says its not proven any better than placebo: Compounded Topical Pain Creams to Treat Localized Chronic Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial - PubMed. However it lists topical gabapentin under neuropathic pain. Not sure if they already know of the 3rd new pain category nociplastic pain aka central sensitization (pain without tissue or nerve damage), the pain category that pain researchers are starting to put FM into (I’m skeptical). But I’d think in a study with almost 400 people there would be quite a few with something similar to FM in there… But I agree - worth a try for people who need meds with few sfx.

Interesting that “ModSupport” has a birthday cake… is that a reaaally big party  or is the cake individualized for the OP despite the ModS-avatar? Happy birthday who- or whatever… :sunglasses:

That means it’s CAKE DAY for ModSupport! It’s the anniversary of the day we joined this community. Our life hasn’t been the same since. So …

Tonight we are all going over to @Davey02766 's place and we are going to make a lot of noise. Merl will start a bon fire and we will roast wieners and make s’mores. And then there will be the cake. I believe @Freedom said she would make it. If there’s any left over, I will bring you a piece :cake: tomorrow. OK?

Seriously, when I keyed “gabapentin topical” into google, the page I got corresponded to the one I got when I clicked on that link. So try again, JayCS. The reading is really interesting! I’ve never heard of topical gabapentin before, but have used topical diclofenac for years. Here (in Canada) it is available without prescription.

Seenie from ModSupport

Anti covulsants have been a common treatment for while along with antidepressants. Not saying it’s good treatment. Savella (the new kid on the block) has a similar mechanism of action. Previously The FDA had only approved three drugs to treat fibromyalgia: the antidepressants duloxetine (Cymbalta) and milnacipran (Savella), plus the anti-seizure medicine pregabalin (Lyrica).

C - I’ll bet I’ll hear the noise you make right over here! And I’ll take a tiny bit of cake too…
Yup, worked now, but as I say my machines don’t like that there search engine…

TJ - Lyrica 2007, Cymbalta 2008, Savella 2009: is 2009 what you mean with NKOTB? And how do you mean “previously”? I’m thinking you meant to write gabapentin/Neurontin, but as pregabalin/Lyrica (approved for medical use 2004) is the successor to gabapentin/Neurontin (approved for medical use 1993, but not specifically for FM like those 3) I’m now just plain confused . You haven’t been drinking :champagne: already, have you?

Seenie, I’m going to the store now to buy the ingredients for the cake. :cake:. Any requests??? I did not say I would SHARE the cake. Maybe yes? Maybe no? Mmmmmmmmm. :joy::rofl::partying_face:

Sour cream chocolate zucchini would be my choice

TJ

Those are the three before that were specifically approved for FMS. There have been lots used off label for specific symptoms. Remember FMS is a syndrome as opposed to a specific disease so treatment strategies vary widely.

ME, JayCS? Are you talking to me?
