Coffee?

Do you drink coffee? I'm curious about how people with fms/cf handle the whole coffee thing. Did you ever drink it? Did you quit and why did you quit?

Thanks,

L-Kitty

I usually have two cups of coffee a day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. I have gone off it before, and really my stomach would probably prefer that, but it's a small thing I enjoy.

I can no longer tell the difference from decaf to regular on most days. I do love coffee.

Hi L-Kitty,

Nope, never cared for the stuff, and I come from a family who always has the coffee brewing. I do like tea, and prefer black tea. I have to be careful of caffeine intake, so if I plan to have a lot of tea, I drink decaf, but I love the good loose English breakfast, or afternoon tea, Irish breakfast. I love iced tea, always make that with decaf, and use the 'sugar in the raw'.

My great grandson is allergic to citric acid, so the only juices he can drink are either pineapple or grape, so I make decaf iced tea for him sometimes. Citric acid is in everything, even ginger ale!

You know they so often change their minds about the pros and cons of coffee and tea, at this moment, they are praised for their anti-oxidant properties. I have heard that if you drink it, you should use organic? There are different ideas about that too!

My husband does not drink coffee either, but my Mom does, and still likes hers best from a percolator.

Hi L-Kitty:

I do drink coffee and I am actually trying to stop drinking caffeine all together as I find it increases my pain. Coffee was a treat for me but I would rather have less pain and drink tea or maybe decaf than the alternative. The way I am weaning myself off from what I consider nectar of the gods in the morning is by decreasing the size of coffee I drink then when I have decreased intake as far as I can go I am going to try to switch it out for tea. I am also horrible about drinking water so I have now started drinking water rather than soda for the most part.

It is hard to think of no coffee in the morning but it will benefit me so I am trying it out. I have tried before when I did not have fibro and it was not successful so hopefully this time it sticks.

Just as a side note, if you like coffee for the taste but want to get away from it i've heard dandelion root tea is a good alternative. I haven't tried it myself but i've heard some good things :).

I love coffee, but I think it increases my pain too. I'm sure it doesn't help with my anxiety problem. I'm weaning myself off of my two cups in the morning. Thanks for letting me know what you all do.

I have started to really enjoy some teas; jasmine is my favorite and I like the chamomille with echinacea in the evenings. Emma, I am also very interested in trying the dandelion root tea. I have plenty of dandelions on our place. They have many herbal benefits.

xoxo I appreciate you all.

I ADORE iced coffee, but I have to say I do notice that it does increase my pain or is it the cream and sugar I heap into it? That would be a fun elimination experiment.:) I would love to find out that it was the cream and sugar, so I could still have the drink of the gods- iced coffee!

I know that my grandmother, and my husband's parents all ate dandelion! They made it with a warm vinegarette, personally I would rather have baby spinach. Just make sure that where you get the dandelion from has not been sprayed!

At my house dandelion greens are free and plentiful! And not sprayed. The fresh ones are just coming up so it will be awhile before I get some good roots. Along these same lines, my grown son and I collect stinging nettles from our place. They too have great medicinal values. We cook up a big pot of them for a spring tonic and just eat them like any lightly boiled vegetable. They lose their sting in the cooking process. They can be cooked many different ways.

It's almost spring and we can forage. It used to be one of most fun things to do. Hurts now, but still good for us.

I've been thinking the same thing BB. Oh, what discipline to remove all of the above from our diet. I can't even think about it. Too overwhelming. LOL!

Hi, I drink 2 cups every morning, and 1 in the late afternoon. It's always been fine, but lately it's making me sick to my stomach, literally. I still drink it, but now have to take anti-naseau meds first. I'm stubborn, love my coffee. Hugs Charlie :)

I've been on a tea kick all day, good thing, one of the grandsons is on the way, he is probably charged up too! Look out, probably be a late night gaming!

I stopped coffee and my migraines went away. I'd love to have a cup but when I think of the migraine I won't. Once and awhile I will have a decaf, but do think it effects me. I mainly drink green tea, two cups - same tea bag...so I won't get extra caffeine.

I drink 1-2 lattes a day (make them at home), and occasionally a cup of normal coffee when I’m out. I find that drinking lattes actually soothes me when I’m in pain (maybe because of all the skim milk), plus wakes me up some days when I’m in a bad fibro fog. I also drink tea (with milk) . I did quit both for about three months, because I know caffeine apparently dehydrates you, but found I was dopier than ever, and even more tired.

I drink only one cup a day.. in the AM... With the meds I take and my meneries (hope that is spelled right) lol...I am not suppose to have caffine at all :( If I do have another cup it makes me dizzy.. The other meds I take don't help either.. I sure hope I can continue to have at least my one cup a day, and every once in a while I have a starbucks, yummy...

I have cut way back on the dosage of Clonazepam I've been taking because some of my outside stress has been eliminated. I've been having trouble getting to sleep without it. So, this morning I had one cup of Jasmine Green Tea and I'm fixing a cup of Chamomile now. No coffee today. I hope I get to sleep before 3 a.m. tonight.

I do love coffee though. Convincing myself perhaps it's not worth taking extra medication just so I can drink coffee. We will see if that's the case. I'm my own lab rat!

Hi LK, I either recently heard or read that the best thing to make part of your morning wake-up is to eat an apple! An apple a day...

I know apples are very good for us and I eat them all the time but, an apple to wake up? Now, SK, that just doesn't sound right! LOL!!! I can picture myself pushing my husband out of the way to get to my morning bowl of fruit. <Chuckling!>>> I wonder where and when people started having a hot drink in the morning. Must have started in our ancient beginnings to warm people after a cold night in the hut. Enjoy your apple in the morning, SK! Hugs.

Hae Rattled. I don't think I've ever seen this brand of tea. It must be comparable to the other boxed teas? The green tea I've been drinking is good, but doesn't have the same umph that coffee does. Have you ever tried loose tea? I just got my new catalog for Mountain Rose Herbs. Fun to look through. They sell the loose tea. It's pretty economical that way. Here's their link if you want to take a look.
