Dealing with depression

As I’m sure you all know, depression is one of the many things we have to deal with and are prone to with Fibro and similar conditions. I’m curious as to how everyone deals with it (aside from depression meds). I find it hits me out of the blue a lot.

hi Karli. I dont suffer from depression but i know of many folks who do. some of my very dear family members. i know how difficult that struggle is. Surely not made any easier when one is dealing with other health challenges. This is a great site to come to to share and get lots of compassion and support. I send you all the best for your well being and HUGGGGGGGGGGS

I have chronic depression. I used to see a therapist. Probably should go back to seeing him.

I have bunches of affirmation books, The AA books are good ones to read, they have a prayer or affirmation for each day of the year & help you work on yourself just for that 1 day. I also have bunches of self help books, even a few from Dr. Phill.

I have read where a person suggests that one write down a list that needs to be done & then cross off 1/2 of the list. I do it differently. I write down every miniscule thing, such as instead of "wash the dishes", I put down "wash" the _silverware, _cooking utensils, _glasses, etc. At the end of my day I can check off silverware(done), cooking utensils(done), glasses(done), etc. Then I have done something proudly & successfully. The next day I can start working my list again but only if I feel up to it.

Hi Karli.. I am usually an emotional person. But depression did not hit til I began to hurt from fibro. It started limiting my activities. Cant even clean my whole house. I break all the chores down through the week. Found my self in tears about twice a week. Just the pain and realization of my inabilities. But I am feeling better these days. Even though there are things I can no longer do, I push myself out of the house to enjoy what I can. I swim for exercise (that creates endorphins) which make us happy. I walk. Go to town functions, like our farmers markets, car shows or parades etc.. Have coffee at a coffee shop and people watch. A DVD comedy is always fun. Think of some simple things you usually enjoy. And write down your thoughts, get them out so they can't keep tormenting you. HUGS !!!

Music sometimes helps to lift my spirits or else petting my dogs is another way of doing so. Doing something that i enjoy is another way. I wish I had a great answer for your question but I don't. Feeling blue myself right now. Sometimes you just have to go with it and wait for it to pass, I guess.
