Pain tolerance

My backs been killing me for the last day and a half and I realized I don't tolerant pain there as well as I do other places. I think I handle the scalpel to my shun bone or a live wire of pain in my arm better than my back. I have a heating pad on it, which kind of burns in an uncomfortable way, but it's better than no heat at all. I go back and forth between low & warm. I can't do ice, it locks up every part of my body and the pain very quickly becomes extremely unbearable! Anyway, I wonder if other's had places they handle pain, even intense pain, better than others?

Yes, some parts of the body takes pain better than the others. For me, the pain is worse on area closer to my head. I rather take leg pain than arm pain. I think we feel more pain where more nerve fibers are located like back or palms of the hands.

If cold hurts you, you shouldn't use it. I never use cold pack for that reason.

You may have some muscle knots back there. Especially if it's right above your bum. L5 gets people a lot, most common point for back surgery. My husband has knots there from sitting in his office chair wrong. Trigger point massage lady says that ice is bad for muscle knots.

Back pain is so hard to deal with, because it just seems to always be there & just sitting wrong causes muscles to tense up… I get relief from those bean bags you heat up in the microwave , I have about 4 of them now , different sizes . Massage also helps & rolling on cold oranges under my back while laying on the floor helps. I also have these small balls firm but not hard about the size of a grapefruit, I put them behind my back while sitting, or I role on them while laying on the floor, they break up the nots.
… Ugh the back pain is so mentally draining !

Thanks everyone!! My back doesn't seem to be getting any better, but not worse as far as I can tell. I have one of those magic wands or whatever their called massager things. It's helped some, but it's a hard area to get it positioned right - then again it could be I'm too tired to put all the work into it... Thanks for your suggestions and understanding! It's so nice to know I'm not alone!!

I have one too! http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Hitachi-Magic-Wand-Massager-HV-250R-Slimming-electric-massager-full-body-VH5-/131014481628?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item1e811256dc

Hitachi magic wands.... they keep going, and going, and going.. much better than battery powered ones.

Yes one of those! I love it!!

Hi BFD. I get the worst pain in my lower back. Seconded by the occasional fireworks in my right knee. And not only is pain less in certain areas but it feels different in how it presents, too. Whereas the right knee gets the fireworks, both knees get a dull, throbbing, heavy pain in them. The back pain feels like bone breaking or someone grinding their knuckles into the buttock trigger point, back and forth, over and over again. That's what's so strange about fibro, each area feels pain in a distinctive manner.

Do you have arthritis in your back? That could be the reason why the fibro hurts there. If you have arthritis there, have you tried cortisone shots? They do help some people but not me so I tried radio ablation (nerve burning.) It helped tremendously the first time, not so much the second time. But it might be something you might want want to look into. The only drawback is that it's only temporary. And it hurt terribly for the first three weeks but I was doing a lot of physical stuff so that may have adversely affected the pain level.

I have like the "normal" 5% arthritis in my hands, but it's not the disease - at least that's what the doc said. I do have arthritis of the sternum - haven't had my back checked. Think I might have injured it Halloween night - it was cold, so my body was tense for two hours, then we hit like three lips in the sidewalk...think it messed my back up. But it didn't show up right away. Still really hurts! Really had to find a good position. Heating pad and massager help, but it's sooo NOT fun! If it doesn't go away think I'll have the doc check it out.

Thanks!

Thanks! I'll do some research into it!

Hey Butterflydragon,

This sounds like something I have written, and could have written today! I have to ask when the last x-rays/MRIs of this area were taken? I looked over your profile, didn't see any arthritis or injury mentioned, but it may be something you want to talk to about with your Doctor!

I have a prescription for an anesthetic spray called Ethyl Chloride, it numbs the area for a few hours, I also use OTC Sportscreme, however these CANNOT be use with a heating pad. Riding in the car is absolute murder for me, so this allows me short trips with reduced pain.

My Chiropractor has told me over and over again that heat should never be used for more than 20 minutes, that after that it destroys new cells, so you may want to keep this in mind, and may use the pain patches and tell me the ones bought at the Dollar generals or Family Dollar stores are just as good as the ones advertised on TV!

Hope this helps, I can empathize with you on this!

Wishing you well,

SK

Dang! I was wondering about that...I've been using the heating pad too much. Now not only does it hurt it's all tingly and funny feeling. Ugh!

The injury happened on Halloween, so it's what a week old. When I have trouble with my spine it's usually my neck, shoulders, and upper back. This is mid to low back and it's horrible! Guess I've just made it worse though...blah! Can't seem to find a place to sit/lay that does anything to help it.

Can't get into the doc right now, but I'll look into the pain patches. Thanks!!

Hope you're doing well too!

Thanks Pam! Thinking of and praying for you too! =)
