Physical Therapy question: "That shouldn't be hurting"

Hi there,

This is my first discussion post, so I hope I am following all the rules. My rheumatologist referred me to physical therapy for hip pain after taking an x-ray and finding no arthritis damage visible. So, it turns out my pelvis is twisted, my spine is compressed, and my hip has an anterior impingement. I've been going to physical therapy for about 2 weeks, twice a week, and afterward, I can't walk. The pain from what they've mobilized or stretched or strengthened is excruciating. I also have numbness and swelling all through the leg.

So the physical therapist told me what they've been doing shouldn't be hurting. So, she palpated different places, and when I told her which parts hurt, she said "oh, that's just muscle pain."

Have any of you heard this? I've gotten no patient education about fibromyalgia from my team, and they say some of my symptoms are "fibromyalgia-ish," and others point to "an auto-immune/inflammatory arthritis-like" condition but I haven't gotten a firm diagnosis yet. So, I don't know whether I am going crazy? Am I imagining this? Why can't I walk after they mobilize my hip? I have so many questions ...

Thanks,

J

Hi, after just finishing a short course of “muscle strengthening” either side of my spine I was in agony. I have compressed discs and degeneration of the left hip whilst having arthritis in right knee. The symtoms and chronic pain of my Fybro flared up after each session regardless of how often I asked her not to knead so hard or try and feel where my muscles were.
You will feel this discomfort because Fybromyalgia is a condition that affects your Muscles, tendons and Ligaments around your joints, along with all the other debilitating factors it gives you.
So no wonder you were feeling so bad after what they did to you, please tell them you cannot have this done again.
Every session I had knocked me off my feet for minimum 3 days and in awful pain.
Hope this helped  V

you are not going crazy and you are not out of your mind..if your pelvis is twisted. spine compressed and hip and an interior impingement no wonder you are in excruciating pain no matter what else may be going on such as fm. cfs or other chronic conditions involving pain. Are the medical people and pt people aware of what condition you are in and are they knowledgeable about it as well? Perhaps you may need to have a reevaluation or /and consult with some others .. all the best. HUGGGGGGS

Thank you so much!

Hello, I highly encourage you to look for a physical therapist who is also knowledgeable about Fibro. I have had Fibro since 1998 and decided this year to try physical therapy for the first time. I was specific in requesting / searching for someone who is knowledgeable about Fibro. I got really lucky, I found a great PT. I started just by going in for initial consult. He gave me some exercises to strengthen core abdominal muscles. My hips were out of alignment and I have some shoulder misalignment as well. All of that contributes to radiating pain from Fibro. The number one thing he said was not to push too hard, if it hurt just stop and try again later. By taking that pressure off, I have been able to really see improvement. I have been going just once a month and getting new exercises / evaluation. I definitely don't do them every day, I try to do them as often as I can. I have seen improvement in some of the my chronic pain areas and I know the exercises have helped that. I find that if a few days go by and I haven't done them I usually will feel a tightening in my legs / increase in pain. Once I get back into pattern of exercises I usually feel a bit better. So I encourage you to look for a supportive and knowledgeable physical therapist and medical team. Also, if you haven't already please check out the Fibro 101 section on here which has good information on diagnosing and treating Fibro. Please keep us updated on how you are doing. Hugs!
