when i am in a flare, my whole face hurts and especially teeth and gums. sorry, i did not know how to respond to this discussion so i had to answer it here. annie
Hi annie! Yes, I know, I have this problem. I have exposed nerves in my teeth, and at times this really bothers me, however, the Lyrica that I take for Sciatic nerve pain really helps this. Also something like Sensodyne toothpaste is a big help!
I hope that you can find some relief, you may want to talk to your Dr about this nerve pain, see what he can do for you! This usually gets worse in the winter too!
Wishing you werll,
SK
I did end up losing all my teeth but it was due to extreme dry mouth part of auto immune complications...and my Rheum did not take it serious until was too late.
I have not had that issue...but i do get canker sores..but i know that is tied in to lupus as well. I am curious if others have this because..i get we have muscles about everywhere...but have not heard of teeth sensitivity as part of Fibro. I kind of wonder if you might have gum disease...have you spoken to your Dentist..i sure would start there. Plus i can say this for 100% sure that sensitive toothpaste and rinses do work! Plus your dentist can prescribe stronger things if they do not work.
I am sorry this happens...teeth and ear aches are awful pain! i am so sorry!
I can relate to the dry mouth, as I have Sjogren's Syndrome, so my tooth loss has been drastic as well.
http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Sjogren's+disease Mine was diagnosed through blood tests, a lip biopsy can also be done.

I use the toothpaste for sensitive teeth. It works fairly well. And I use the Dollar General brand. I imagine that Sensodyne would work even better.
Hope your teeth are feeling better!
thank you petunia girl. don't i just hit reply, type, and then hit add reply?
it sounds like a lot of people are on lyrica, right? doesn't that cause some serious weight gain which makes getting around even more difficult?
i finally found an anti depressant that has no side efffects for me...celexia. this seems to be working well.
to the person who suggested i have gum disease...no, i do not. i see my dentist regularly. i do have a neurological problem involvin my mouth which contributes to the pain. it might just be something that i experience more than most others, although there were some of you who also had this issue. i did buy some toothpaste today for sensitve teeth. my dentist wants me to bleach my teeth every day for two weeks for a cosmetic procedure he messed up the first time. that stuff really contributes to the pain in my mouth! anyway, this too shall pass.
hugs, annie
Great you do not have gum disease! I know many people who despite having Dental Insurance will not go the dentist every 6 months! Many not until a tooth hurts! I did have gum disease despite going every 6 months and ended up going monthly since it got to where my teeth were falling or cracking one right after another.
Hmm, I wonder if Pain specialist might have a drug that would work specifically with your kind of pain since you know the causes? what do your doctors and dentist have to say? Maybe if they are not now working together, you can get them to call each other and discuss what is the best plan for you.
If I was you, I hold off on whitening since some unethical Dentist use products that do remove enamel plus it might exacerbate your situation. Hopefully, your MD and Dentist can discuss what is the best treatment plan for you.
Even the special tooth pastes might not be good for you. I can only speak from my own experiences which were completely caused from severe dry mouth due Sjogren's
Good luck, I hope your doctor and dentist speak and find an solution for you!
Yep that is exactly what I had as well....plus i had dry eyes along with it. Did you have the test in your eyes that turns white of your eyes bright red?!! My eye doctor thought it was so funny knowing very well I had to go back to work for another 4 hours looking like a Vampire!
Annie,
I might be mistaken but I thought the procedures used to brighten teeth did contribute to painful teeth, which is why i don't do it.
And yes, sensitive teeth do indeed seem to be fibro related. I guess it makes sense since they have nerves in the roots and fibro impacts nerves.
You are probably correct on replying, I'm too tired and sore to think too hard on it. Sorry to not have my brain on today.
thank you so much for all of that thoughtful input. truthfully those teeth hurting in a flare are the LEAST of my problems. i had an injection of cortisone in my spine last week, and i am twice as bad in my back and legs. my legs hurt so badly when i walk now which was never the case, and they are weaker. it is very hard to get up from a stooped position. i am frankly scared right now. i did leave a message with this info on the voice mail for my doctor. if things do not improve, this is so dramatic i might consider legal action although i'd hate to do it. perhaps when it wears of i will be better. anyway, thank you again siskya. i really appreciate it. annie
thank you sweetie. that is an excellent suggestion. i should have been journalling since i had it. they should be calling back this week. i had decided i was writing a snail mail letter to dr. nelson and retaining a copy so all is in writing.
i will let you know...it is my hope and prayer that as that junk leaves my system things will improve. i just moved to a new town and have a garage full of stuff to deal with. yesterday i think i emptied and sorted through a small box and a bag and was totally "done in". it was all i could do to get something together to ea t and take a bath. i had to get on my tummy in the tub, get up on my hands and knees and from there get out of the tub...not good.. i am twenty minutes now from the hospital and most medical facilities although i have a good primary doctor here.
the fact that driving to bend (where the hospital, etc. are) was difficult on the return trip is a real concern!! i am single and thus far no one who would offer help here. there are some ladies that started up a neat thrift store...think i will hang out there more and meet someone (hopefully). it's been very hard to break into established groups here.
thank you for sharing angelonearth...hugs, annie
hi sk ~ i did buy the sensodyne toothpaste, but i've had no pain at all and haven't even used it yet. it is only when i really flare up elsewhere!! thank you for the suggestion. annie
soooooo sorry that you lost your teeth, but i bet your new ones are beautiful. i have been very blessed with dental issues...don't have any, but the Plus White stuff in the tray DOES bother my gums.
i have a lady friend who is also losing all of her teeth. they think it is from smoking. she said she can't do false teeth because she gags...she just has to let go of the cigs, and i know it is hard as i used to smole myself...but do no look like a smoker...with her two bottome teeth out, none in the back and a huge gap between the front teeth, the poor thing has a very bad smile. i am so concerned for her. she is a nurse...amazing how many nurses smoke. annie
hi petunia girl...those dental whiteners definitely hurt your gums. my dentist tells me i am using too much, but no matter how little you put in that tray, it is going to get on your gums. i've been so sick with fibro trying to move into a new house all alone that i cannot get two straight weeks of bleaching done. it is for a special procedure...must be done at some point. bite the bullet type of thing.
yes, many believe fibro is a nerve problem more than an inflammatory one. i take a ton of neurontin for nerve pain. now since that injection in my back, the nerves in my legs start burning quickly.
i am tired too and off to a heating pad. ( : annie
You mentioned that you moved...so is it possible that you might have injured your back packing and moving plus driving? All 3 of those could easily have made your back go out as some say. Plus, explain why cort shot is not helping.
If you are overwhelmed with pain which it sounds, why not just go to ER or Urgent place which even Sisters might have. At least than they will be able to get your pain under control so you can rest tomorrow and than go and see your Doctor on Monday.
Oh plus your fibro most likely is acting up do to all the work of moving and stress of new place. But Bend and Sisters is very nice. I know you do not feel well so keep this short. I am really sorry you are in so much pain...but even how you got out of the tub is very typical of people who have put their back out. I hope you get some relief soon since nothing is worse than being in that much pain and all alone in new place! Please get some help for the pain so you do not suffer and rest! really hope you get some relief soon!
I haven't had that done, hopefully I can skip that! So many of these tests just seem to heighten all of the problems that we already have! Hope you can get some relief, I use moisture eye drops by the gallon!
hi siskya ~ i have spinal stenosis at L-5, so my back isn't out as they say. it is something i have to live with. actually i have gotten a lot of help from people in churches to hang mirrors, curtain rods, etc. they got everything i need set up for me originally, so now i am not even doing that much...like i said a box here and there because the tiniest thing wipes me out. i ave to make room for my car as the snow will be flying soon and already has. i don't like cleaning off the windows, etc.
i lived in bend for 27 years and wanted a house there but couldn't find one. sisters is beautiful too...much more quiet but with waaay fewer amenities.there is no urgent care facility although you can calll medics if you need someone.i will not even be seeing that doctor who injected me...i see his PA next month!! all is in bend...all specialties. i think it is a bit more humid in sisters too. although i am thrilled with my brand new home, i am very lonely here. everyone is a couple, and i am single...looking 55 with long blond hair...i think it feels threatening to some of the wives. i am not that kind of woman of course, but we'll see how it goes. i am not in pain in the morning when i wake up...it is as the day goes on. all i KNOW is that i am much worse since that spinal injection. where do you live? family? my son is married and an attorney out in the atlanta area...so we do not see each other much. i am very solitary and a Christian writer, but i do need compainionship on occasion. annie
thank you SK. it is very difficult to even get an appointment with a specialist around here! you have to deal with your primary who is an internist or family practice. they generally do not know too much. i find that the DO's know more than the MD's about fibro.
true ...winter does not help our condition, so we have to embrace it gracefully just like aging...a few days a week i actually do that! ( : hugs, annie
I have sensitive teeth and exposed roots as well. Never had dental problems at all as a kid, always had perfect teeth, but in the last year or so they've worsened dramatically. Now I do wonder if it was the Fibro doing it, as I didn't get diagnosed until this year. Even the sensitive toothpaste makes my teeth hurt though...if sugar touches the roots, or anything cold, I get nasty pain that lasts for a couple minutes until the aggrivator is gone.
that sounds just miserable! i am so very sorry....stay away from sugar as it causes all sorts of problems...cancer cells love it for one thing, it messes with our fragile moods, etc. i'd try to stay away from the cold things too. my mouth is sensitve to hot things, so i eat most of my food cold...whatever works...do it....annie
