1st social security physical....worried

I have my physical tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone has had one. Just like to know what to expect. My fears-they won't think I am unable to work, they will want to put their hands on me and the pain associated with that, having a panic attack while I am there or worse an IBS attack. Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thxs Lovett.

Thanks Avenk,

That doesn't seem to bad

hi jackie.. i agree with waht avenk said. my experience was pretty much the same thing. i think since they do not know you and are not treating you they do a routine thing. bend this way and that way,. reach. etc. how long can you walk , stand, how many pounds can you lift. best of luck good thoughts are with you..

Thanks Suzie.

Hi Jackie,

My experience is similar to avenk's: my social security physicals were quick and the doctors barely touched me. It seems to be more of a routine you have to go through. Having a panic attack while there, while not something anyone would want, could actually help your case. Having more than "just fibro" seemed to make my case more legitimate in their eyes--at least, that was my impression. I have panic attacks too, I had one just before I went in before the judge for my final judgement and I told them about it. I have been on SS disability since 1992. A few times they have sent me back to recheck, which was always worrisome but the worry was for nothing. They are over booked and understaffed. You are clearly very ill. You will pass with flying colors, I have no doubt!!!

Gentle Hugs, Kimberly :)

Not to be worried about it, mine was a JOKE. I was 49 at the time. The Social Security worker told me it wasn't a big deal and it wasn't. The place I had it in reminded me of a place a place in Bangladesh where people went for medical treatment, ok, not quite that bad, but not far off, also in not a great part of the town. We had to drive an hour and a half to get there, that was before our handy direction finders. (about 20 yrs ago) I hope it's better now, or at least better in your area. The exam itself didn't take more than 15 minutes. I have Dr.s now from India, but this one must have just gotten here and learning the language. When he asked me how many hysterectomies I had my husband looked at me and winked and smiled. When I said I had only one he thanked me for my response, and moved on. No blood taken. Blood pressure taken, heart and lungs. Tapped my body in the normal places a Dr. does to try and diagnose if you really have fibromyalgia. With the stress of having to take the exam I'm sure you'll say "ow" in all the correct places. As long as you let them really know how much pain you have had, and all the other problems it causes, fibro fog, etc, you'll do just fine. Another thing that the social security person told me was the closer you are to 50 years old the better chance you have of getting it, UNLESS IT'S YOUR FIRST GO AROUND. I've known many, many, people to try for it, that don't get it on the first try. Never fear. You'll most likely get it on the second try. Actually, as I think of it, the first physical got cancelled, and I didn't have my physical until my appeal, just more paperwork, nothing to worry about, just DON'T GIVE UP. Get your paperwork done on each appeal as soon as possible. The sooner you get it in, the sooner you'll hear back. I also think they realize how "desperate" we are for income, and getting it back immediately is just another indication we need the $. If I can give you any other information that I may have forgotten, some specific question, don't hesitate to ask! Good luck and you'll be in my prayers!! Susan D

My physical was pretty long. One thing I would do differently is to show exactly how much pain I was in, instead of my habit of trying to hide my pain when around others. Act as if you would at home. If IBS has you doubled up, Sow that pain in the physical. If it hurts to bed over, bend less than the full way. They can only know about the pain that you show them. If you act fine, they will think you ARE fine.

Panic attack..great idea!!

Back from my physical. He did cause some pain. We did the push pull routine then he wanted to do the pressure points I couldn't help but cry out when he touched me. He did say I was classic fibromyalgia patient he asked about the pain and I was honest I can deal with that if I could just not be so mentally foggie and tired all the time. So for the most it went ok. Then I get back to my daughters and there is a letter from our new rheumatologist he is no longer there. look I have only seen him once and now they say till august before they can replace him....well my daughter has RA and psoriasis and I be darn to heck if they think I will let my baby (she is 29) suffer that long they are crazy...so now we need to find a new rheumatologist...isn't medicine fun....yea....anyway thank for everyones info I wasn't to scared for my appointment. :-)

I signed up for social security disability 12/2012 and took a physical in march I think. Same thing spent about 15-20 minutes with me. Poked and prodded on me then in June I got a denial. I immediately got a attorney. He made me fill out a bunch of paperwork and my dr before he would take the case. Then he called me and I went in… He told me if I don’t get paid he doesn’t and by law he can only get 6% of my back pay. Anyway he told me that the dr usually always say no. But he was confident we would win. He said they are starting to acknowledge fibermyalgia as a disease. In October of 2013 social security called me and within 2-3 days I had my deposit in my account.
Your dr needs to clearly say you can’t work and if you have any other issues use them! Sadly you also need to be having a really bad day when you go in, it helps!
Best wishes, Cammie
Have you been denied yet?

Cammie, no i have not been turned down yet i applied in January this year so am still in the early stages of this process. Thanks for your reply

I'm glad things went okay at your appointment. I still have a year to go before I have to have mine. Have a happy easter!

I forgot to add the good news. Even 20 years ago I received SSD within a year, approximately on my 50th birthday. I remembering be so relieved!!!

I don't know why I had such good luck with my application.. I applied in late October and have been approved in early April and I get my first check in june. The only doctor I had to see was a psychologist.. Ummmm... Lol. Enough said? Lol

I had my physical was in 2012. They tried to make me bend over as far as you can. Also, touch your toes, sit, stand on toes. That all I remember.

Hi

Do you have a long history of medical problems and doctors to back you up? It took me 10 years of fighting to get my SSDI.

Jdesigner, no I am health except for the fibromyalgia. Well I have a long hx of depression with 1 suicide attempt (my 2nd husband was dating his 5th girlfriend-we are divorced- I was an idiot) i dont let anyone have that kinda of hold on me anymore.
I have been "ill" since 2009. I was exposed to a virus while caring for a patient in the hospital...have not been well since. So i keep my fingers crossed...there is no way i trust myself enough to care for an ill person right now...just to foggy mentally. I am sorry it took you so long...I really hate this illness, it makes no sense the way it attacks all of us in different ways. I just keep hoping they find a cure or at least minimize the symptoms so people can function.

Ive have not had a physical Ive been Denied 2x On my last appeal Im hoping for good news in Aug or Sept depressing when you go through the process Im not giving up I pray that this goes good for you and you will WIN I hope to hear good news soon Take Care Hugs

Hi

fibromyalgia is on the social security list. So you should be fine. With having fibro and other problems, I will not win with that. Doctors have already given up.
